Simple, easy, and cheap just the way I like it. You can lay down mower lines like a pro with this homemade striping set up. Works on most mower including Husqvarna, Craftsman, MTD, Cub Cadet, John Deere etc. Easy DIY
I'm 50 years old now... or young.. whatever... I have been mowing this property (now my parents) since I was a little hyper active kid.. I've come in gone but this 2 acre property in College Station, Texas has been in the family since the 1930's.. We always joke about who can or has mowed it best... My uncle was hazed with a bladed push (non gas) "mower" in the 40's and 50's... Everyone has tried a hand, or should I say, been HAZED mowing this property... It definitely is NOT a square and I have always wanted to stripe it properly but I never thought about it too much, especially if I was "pushing" a non propelled anything.. Even with decent lazy "tractors" (that's funny, I have big Kubotas and Deer for the ranch) I couldn't get anything close to stripes (you could see, but not really)... I'm off to buy a broom... This should make my parent's jaw drop the next time I go over to mow that lawn!! Thanks!!!
Only thing I see wrong is the cutting height won't be accurate with the brush holding the deck up some.. probably trimming the brush down about 2 or 3 inches would work better
The bristles are only strong enough to hold the deck weight up when sitting completely flat and straight. When the mower moves forward the bristles tilt backwards and can't hold up the deck weight so the cut height isn't affected. I think if you trimmed off the bristles it wouldn't stripe so well
Nice. I've thought about using a broom or a rubber mat, but I have been dragging the "boat rollers" for the past 10 years. Have on order some replacement rollers from Eastern Marine as mine are looking quite worn. I started off putting some heavy weights on my roller mechanism but didn't find it all that improvement in stripes. I wonder which stripper design has the best longevity? I do agree that striping a lawn does make a big visual difference. Nice video describing yours, thanks.
More pressure is better, most commercial mowers that stripe just have 12-18" deck rollers on the back of the deck and the weight of the deck stripes the grass
Its because the grass was extremely high and the clippings were covering the lines. If you look at the first pass i do you can see the lines really well, then it covers back up as i mow more and blow clipping over it. My lawn (in the photos at the beginning) i only go over once when I mow.
Yes you can use a PVC pipe filled with rocks dragged behind the mower by chains..... but that makes it very hard to back up, doesnt put enough pressure on the grass for dark stripes and looks weird. This goes on in 10 minutes, last 4-5 years, doesnt interfere with how the mower drives and costs nothing more than a broom head.
