I have a pretty specific need to separate line art from the paper, and the most direct an comprehensive approach I found was this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LMV1NlM-ww8.html It starts at about 2:00, but when she starts, her default is a White background and her art opens as Layer 1. When I try to work with an opened project, PS always turns my image into "Background" which creates problems a few steps later. Could you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Is there a settings I'm missing? Thank-you.

@@pixelandbracket But you do need to provide CC info for auto bill after the 2 month trial...and you can only do that using PayPal, which is horrific for dispute resolution. Why not just have a free tutorial on RU-vid...?

Finally, a 'beginner' video that actually addresses the basics that are necessary to understanding. I am so glad I found this tutorial. This is exactly what I needed to see so I can quickly learn some photoshop basics to then teach a class how to create a Hybrid Self Portrait. I am excited to do this!

Thanks for going slowly and quietly. I'm like others here, old school. I love photography and realize I need to learn this stuff. So many RU-vid videos out there go so fast and they assume you know things you don't know, and it's extremely frustrating. I'm going to watch this again, and try it out on my photoshop. I know this is an old video, but it has helped me a LOT in understanding layers. I've been using Ps for about 3 years and still get confused when I'm trying to paint on or off parts of a layer. This helped a lot just knowing what is happening.
