This video is constructing and laying a brick porch step with 2 treads. I drilled holes for rebar in the existing porch and glued rebar in for added strength and stability. I use a modular size brick called Abingdon from a local brick plant. This brick matches the existing brick on the home. I use brixment type s masonry cement and yellow mortar sand. The joints are tooled with a grapevine jointer. Enjoy the video.

You’re right that was a lot of brick. A lot more it seems than we removed. Brick work is looking so sharp. Good video man.

Great job on the steps. I do this myself part time as a secondary job. I really enjoyed this build and the previous one that you did.

Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video. I have a brick mailbox job lined up. Materials are already on that site (not sure exactly when I will get to it) I am hoping to make a little video on it also.

Looks really great. My only concern is the last step (top one) looks to be around an inch taller than the first two. Is this not a tripping hazard?

Checked this out per your recommendation, looks good! Hope I can lay brick as good as you on my upcoming project. Another formula to use for stairs is 2xRise + Run = 25. Using this in conjunction with the rise + run =18 formula will yield professional feeling stairs that match your natural stride. You can’t always get the formulas to work perfectly but as close as possible is best. I’ve only ever built wood stairs so I see how brick has its limitations on adjustments. I suppose you could adjust mortar thickness for minute adjustments or maybe landing height on some projects. On one project I was right in the middle of having 3 tall stairs or 4 short stairs. Decided to adjust the landing so I could have 3 “perfect” stairs. I bet having a little bit of overhang On treads (nosing) would look nice

Lots to know before undertaking a brick step like this. I’ve known bricklayers that do quality wall work that don’t even know how to do steps. I could keep busy on steps alone…plus I enjoy doing them.

I enjoy doing steps also. I certainly don’t know everything about them. But I do try my best. Thanks for commenting.

honestly i will give you an A+ for your efforts, but al you should've come of the brick wall 26 1/2 inches. your first thread should never be anything over 8 inches as for the height.. that's if you even care to stay in code. first course should be one just regular brick work. coming of the brick wall 26 1 /2 inches. Then directly on top of that wall you will rowlock it . then for your second thread it will only be a half thread. Meaning one brick high. Just your rowlock off the wall 131/2. Seems you were a good labor for someone and you have learned just enough to make it look as you are a finished mason. Man i cant believe you let that be seen on camera .See Its the little things my friend. And even by yourself starting a 8 in the am you should've been finishing the same day no later than four .but ill give you a A+ for your efforts. Most young men i know wont even get a job

where are you located my friend? awesome work, loving it. keep posting other brick work projects! enjoy watching them. by the way where do you buy your sand? The masonry sand at my homedepot feels literally like playsand/beach sand and yours like more compact and better for mason work!

Thank you! I am in America in North Carolina. I get that sand at a landscape supplier. It is called yellow mason sand. It works well.

What happens when the rebar rusts and expands and starts to form cracks all over? Are they designed to only last 40 years at best and then start from scratch? How come old school brickwork that predates steel reinforcement, especially for non load bearing applications, is still standing proudly and only may require repointing. All the steel will do is garunteee half the life span if not less, compared to non steel reinforced masonry. What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you use the steel because it is mandated by building code?

Once you joint the muck let it go off for 10mins then brush it off with a soft brush

i would’ve put block down and then covered with brick, lot less work and block is more sturdy but idk i’m just starting out and i’m doing my first job doing steps so i’m looking to see how the pros do it before i go at it🤣
@JustinBiddix
@JustinBiddix Год назад
I thought about laying some block first, but being that it was only 2 steps and a relatively small area, I figured I’d just use all brick.
@Mikkeyboyy

that is beautiful im going to try can you not cinder block first then cap with brick

I’ve been a bricklayer 40 years and never built a step. How do you determine how deep your treads will be.
@JustinBiddix
@JustinBiddix Год назад
I think there are building codes in each area that will answer that properly. However, I have found that when using modular brick a good tread depth is one rowlock course and 2 more stretcher bonds in behind it. This gives you about 13 or 14 inches of tread. I feel like that is a comfortable tread

Your edits turn out great. I have been struggling to get good video. This format works great. I see you spent the big bucks on a crick level. When that stops reading true do yourself a favor and get a Stabila. They last for years of daily abuse! A spirit level is always one two foot fall away from not reading true. you have to bend the Fram of a Stabile for it to not read true.
