I try to do a few meters of Traditional hedge laying, or steeping every year. It's good for the hedge and harvests a bit of firewood. I tend to use a chainsaw, as it's quicker than saws and billhooks. Although you'll notice I use me favourite hook quite a bit...

Great video Phil. I could watch hedge laying for hours! Every hedges is different and it’s such a satisfying job, especially looking back at a hedge after a couple years.I try and lay a bit with my dad every year ( Devon bank style so very similar to yours). Only thing we do different is we’ll cut out ‘crooks’ which are like a little hook where one side is longer than the other, and we use them to tie the hedge in to the bank. Sometimes a bit of baler twine is used aswell. 👍keep the videos coming.

Hats of to you doc. I had a lad ask why I didn’t lay the hwrong she’s on the estate. One, the hawthorns are to big (12-18inches and full trees) but the amount of time and money (if you pay someone) is prohibitive. I could get 65acres tractor flailed for the same as 40m 🤷‍♂. Funny you mentioned hedge fuel, I read it might be an important in the future as a biomass source!

Another enjoyable vid as always Dr Phil, were I live in West Oxfordshire/The Cotswold's I don't see much traditional hedge laying going on but I do see plenty of dry stonewalling being done which I haven't done any myself in years, but your right about keeping the old traditions going as a reminder of the hardships our ancestors faced back in the day, also if these old traditions are stopped then we run the risk of losing the skill for good and you never know when you might need it again.

Great informative film again. You will have plenty of pea sticks. I remember doing this in the 80's with my father in East Sussex.

Great job Dr. Phil! Learned a lot from you. It's not something l've seen done here in Ireland but lve tried it and l am going to do more. Really fills in the gaps and thickens things up. Makes sense too now also the way payments are going. But lve always had an interest in it regardless

That brings back a lot of memories driving through strange with going through streams with a buck break to bring the timber out the timber out thorns in the hands ends especially when you're dealing with white thorn In a nice big bonfire at the end to warm yourself up

Very informative, but another reason we don't have many hedges in the US! Some less charitable people call us lazy, you know? If someone needed to lay a hedge over here, they'de just use a bulldozer.🤣

Nice comment Eric. There is a strange relationship between scale / productivity / and diversity ..... Hedge laying is bang in the middle of that continuum..
