Hey Kyle. I can really appreciate how much time and effort goes into your work. Each stage of the job requires so much thought, time and effort. I believe you are a perfectionist (like myself) but that is a good thing for sure! Taking pride in your work is very important and the satisfaction it brings at the end of the day is so good for the soul! Having run my landscape business in New Zealand for over 20 years, often (like you) with just my right hand man by my side, I always think back to projects and sometimes wonder how on earth 2 guys got through all of that work! It's amazing what you can achieve with determination and obviously a lot of hard yakka! You are absolutely bang on when you say you have to have time to picture the job process, step by step in your minds eye. It's amazing when you do this how much better the finished result will be. Thanks for the very kind words brother! I would definitely say I'm a perfectionist, a blessing and curse, but more of a blessing for sure. That must be pretty cool doing landscaping in New Zealand, Such a beautiful place from what I have seen online. I always enjoyed working with smaller crews. I prefer 3 man crews than 2 but it is wild how much 2 guys can complete when there is a good plan and focus. That would be a blast brother! I would love to arrange that, same goes the other way around. It would be cool to spend a day on nice patio pour with you. I may know a lot about pavers and natural stone, but pouring concrete, not so much. Only what I learned watching You and Ryan.... That's what I figured because I feel like I would have seen them by now if there was. And I would love to see You and Ryan do that. I'm actually very curious to see how he feels about pavers / stenciled concrete. He is all about the big jobs and production though. He has excellent quality, don't get me wrong. But He seems to be more into smashing big jobs than getting smaller more creative work. Which that is what you need with a company his size and with that many employees. Still don't know how he does it all man... He must be non stop, 24 / 7.... I like my life a little slower than that. But yea, I cant wait to do some collabs with other guys on here, would be fun as heck!
That explanation with all your math would make for a great video from your office where you could use a whiteboard and draw this whole scenario out and visually explain the math behind every step!

I agree, sometimes the hardest part of the project is seeing what the boss has planned out in his own mind for days, weeks, or even months. Proper communication goes a long way.
For sure, You said it perfectly. They just don't understand how difficult it is to get tossed on a jobsite with no prior communication and then be expected to kill it. It takes time to envision and plan the a project.
Thank you! I use the geogrid in between the layers of backfill stone to help stabilize it and prevent shifting / settling in the future. It is a very good practice when building steps. It locks the 3/4 stone together nice and tight. ✌
Do you stick with the same brand of pavers & blocks, or do you sometimes use other brands? Planning a small stairway/retaining wall project for this summer.
I typically keep it between a couple manufacturers. The pavers in this project have been a very popular choice with my customers. They have nice wavy joint lines that give them a natural cobblestone look. I have done a lot of work with Techo Bloc products as well. But Yes, I try to keep it between a few choices unless customers specifically choose something.
I own the smaller clamp. This is a great tool, however, BUYER BEWARE! You need to wrap the teeth on the the part that grips the product otherwise it will create scuff marks or scratches on the face of finished products. It happened to us. We ended up shrink wrapping a vinyl tubbing onto the teeth. It worked great after that. ✌🏽

Hi, I have been following your videos and I have began to install pavers finally. My rock yard said 3/4 clean stone would work as a base but i'm finding that It doesn't compact very tight. I am reading that I should have gotten the road base with the sands. Do you think I can still make 3/4 clean stone work? Or should I go grab some road base and mix it in?
Negative, don’t use road base. This stone is not supposed to be tight. It is a loose aggregate, it won’t compact like road base and that’s ok. When you compact it, it is only suppose to settle the stone in. I think what your worried about is that after you compact, it is still loose. That’s ok. It’s loose because it has no fines in it. It won’t sink even though it’s (loose). Everything I teach on my channel is about how this method is better than road base and sand. I used that method for years before switching to open grade base 4+ years ago. I know it seems like the loose stone should be tighter, but it’s not supposed to compact like road base. Road base gets tight because it has stone dust and fine particles in it. Which is exactly what you don’t want. It restricts water flow, causing issues down the road. I understand your concern, but don’t worry that it still seems loose. That is what most contractors can’t wrap there head around. The stones having open gaps is why it’s (loose) but it is also why it’s better for water flow and why it shifts / settles less than road base. Road base is a sponge for water, causing shifting. It also causes heaving in the winter because all the water that is stuck in it freezes and expands. Which lifts the pavers up and when it thaws, causes the pavers to sink and shift. Trust me, just compact the stone to settle it and screed the 3/8 crushed stone right on top of that. You don’t need to compact that. Lay the pavers and compact the pavers into that stone.
I agree with that Kyle that’s exactly how we do all our dry laid patios and never any problems and we return to our jobs over the years while doing other work for repeat customers and we’ve never had a problem using 3/4 as base. Sometimes we use 67 which might be a little smaller than 3/4 but it’s still a clean stone. That shit always works great for that kind of work

I told my wife earlier that I may have F'd up when we had 3 Cu Yards delivered dumped on our driveway. When I thought I needed base she said I looked like I saw a ghost. Thank you so much for putting my insecurity to rest I was full of anxiety today. I'll continue with my plan based on your recommendations. By the way - the 3/8th stone is absolutely wonderful. I like the way it shovels and feels in the hand. Pavers sit on it perfectly and i'm glad I opted for this instead of sand. Thank you so much. I should be done with the base by tomorrow and will install pavers sometime in March. I will be happy to share with you if I have success!
@@TacoBell5DollarBox I am glad to hear it man. It is a great method but not very well known yet. I am trying to spread the knowledge of it here on RU-vid. You will definitely have success, I'm sure of it. That 3/8 stone is excellent. You may have to hammer some pavers down and possibly lift some pavers up here and there, but that's normal. You can screed pretty damn close to perfect and still have that issue. So as you are laying the pavers, be sure to lift and hammer whenever necessary. Good luck brother!
Yes sir.... This clamp is worth every dollar. I have heard horror stories about the vacuums, unless you completely destroy the clamp, it should always work. ✌
Yoooo! That work looks mint! Thanks for your explanation of layout! Definitely a bitch to do by yourself. But yeah man layout is really the hard part of any install. Like you said a lot of thinking and measuring and figuring out square and laying out lines and elevations. It can be way more tiring than installing lol! Fortunately I gotta give credit to my dad because he is ace at layout so he’s been working to get me to his level with layout. I swear I’ll keep him around even when he doesn’t want to lay stone anymore just for his layout expertise. And yea man i hear you on the big companies not giving guys info. When I was 23 I worked for a landscaping contractor for a lil bit cause my dad was in a lil bit of trouble and had to do 90 days in the county and I swear this guy would send with a piece of paper and tell me nothing and I had to figure out how to build a fireplace and he would want it done by next week lmao. Then that guy would come out and be like why did you build it so tall and I’m like you just told me to build it lol. As soon as my dad got out I was back with him and will probably always work with him till he’s done and then I’ll run my own thing. Also great equipment for setting those risers! It’s killer. Cool the homeowner helped you out bro. And also I saw what I think was a model 7 mallet. We got one that thing is awesome!!!! Anyway sorry to get long winded but great work and great explanation. As always man, I really appreciate the feedback and support. This is a very cool comment. I think most guys who step up and try to run projects deal with managers and bosses like that. They send you to a job with no info, and barely help you at all. Then when your done, they come and give you shit. Or they take credit by saying it was their plan and design that made the job nice, not your work. Crazy bro, most of them are too prideful. Most of the people I worked for didn't have any respect from me. I called them out a lot on their mistakes, never sat well... LMAO. But yea, all it ever did was give me more motivation to learn as much as I could so I could have my own business. Took me 12 years, 3 companies and over 12 different bosses to get to where I am now. Wouldn't change it for the world. I thank God every day for my life, my family and my business. This RU-vid journey has also been a huge blessing. The customer even told me that she knew it was cause of my work that is was beautiful. Funny thing was it was one of the first ones I laid on my own and it would’ve even been nicer if that guy wasn’t calling me and telling me to hurry up lol. His customer actually hired me to come back and fix some stuff his company did at a later date lol. I could go on and on. What kills me is that people think we don’t have to do anything technically difficult and we just”pick things up and put them down “ Sometimes my head wants to explode with all the figuring I do on a difficult job with a lot of lay out!
