Welcome to the second episode in our Sprinter van conversion series! After some unwelcome delays, we finally get to laying out the floor plan & removing the walls, floor & bulkhead partition.
It’s dirty work, but taking the van right back to basics & being able to properly visualise what we’re working with is oh so satisfying.
Tune in to find out what was underneath the panels & just how much scrubbing it took to get her clean.
Let us know in the comments what would your must haves be for a DIY campervan layout.
See you in the next instalment & if you haven't already - don't forget to subscribe!

Tell us - are you starting a van build yourself or just interested in the process?

Interested in the process now and hoping to start a van build when I'm done school! Love watching conversions start to finish:)

I'm hiring a converter to build out my van. He's booked until October, so for now I'm doing things like designing the cabinetry and taping out the layout on my garage floor. Wish me luck!

Oh nice! I imagine most converters are really busy at the moment so no surprises he’s booked up. Should give you plenty of time to finalise exactly what you want though which is good. Is it a Sprinter you’ve gone for?

@@TheWholeWorldorNothing With my personal requirements in mind, I can use either a Promaster 159 EXT or a Sprinter 170. They're both so rare that I will buy the first suitable one I find. Currently it looks like the Promasters are more available, so that's what I'm designing for currently.

Haha yes we wondered if any eagle eyed viewers would spot it 😆 There will be a bit of that in this series as we’re doing it in sections that make sense as a whole rather than chronological order, hopefully it still works.

I am planning to start a van build and I cannot thank you enough for all your insight and experience. I came across your channel when I started watching the tour video, but stopped halfway through and went back to your first video when I realised that you shared your experience from the very beginning. Also, something about you living in the UK makes it all relevant (i.e. I could look for similar materials, your experience with car dealers...etc). Thank you thank you thank you!!

Ah thank you that’s lovely to hear and so great that you’re finding it helpful. We totally understand about the UK thing too, we had the same thing when we were researching - the guys we found to watch in the UK were really useful for that reason. We really appreciate you watching along and feel free to ask if you have any questions 😀 Have you decided what van you’re going to get yet?

So Glad to have found you guys, Love your videos, and planning on using your channel for my self convert. I have just purchased a crafter, just getting my first self build, my T4, ready to sell. The T4 was great to give me some initial practice at stuff like electrics but now onto the serious conversion. Your channel has really given me confidence that the more complex conversion is possible for me!!! As a single lady, I will often need to find a few people to offer me a spare hand from time to time I guess! haha

Yikes - mechanical gremlins waiting to strike! They never appear at a good time! We're happy that oil leak was a quick, easy and relatively inexpensive repair.

Yeah we were so relieved it wasn’t a big repair! Touch wood we’ve not had anything go wrong since either 😀

We've just started looking for a van to convert. Still a toss up between a VW Crafter or Sprinter. I would be interested in your thought process behind opting for the Sprinter. I'm also going to put together a spread sheet of parts required and budget costs. Do you have a list of all the equipment you have installed. Obviously if I could see this it would be a great starting point in our process (I know its a lot to ask). Great videos btw really straight forward and informative.

Hi just subscribed to your channel, I’m just about to start a Sprinter conversion so looking forward to your adventures, don’t worry too much about the reliability of your van as I run a few Sprinters at work some are coming up to 200k with very few problems, good luck
@TheWholeWorldorNothing
@TheWholeWorldorNothing 3 года назад
Awesome stuff, that’s great to hear thanks, the reliability was the main thing that attracted us to Sprinters but the initial problems knocked our confidence a bit! Hopefully some of our build might be helpful to you and let us know if you have any questions when you get going. We’re not experts but we finished it at least 😂 Have you got your layout sorted and planned?

Hey guys - Im in the middle of doing exactly the same and my van needed a lot more cleaning than yours :'( But just a quick one for your opinions and a bit of help. 1. If there are spots we legit cant reach but are a bit grimey (but you've got the majority cleaned) can we ignore it? Or any tips how to get deep behind panels? 2. Taking that step off at the back - I've struggled! How did you do it? Did you pop those black clips up and just fully pull them out? I don't want to break them obviously so any tips would be great! Love the videos they have helped so much and will be purchasing insulation and bits through the links!

Hi, I like your van. You made a nice home. Can you tell us the interior dimensions? Is it a l2, h2 sprinter? Thank you

Thank you. Yes it’s a long wheel base, not sure what l2 h2 means but it’s not extra long or extra high if that helps 👍

Having just built a sprinter camper, few tips for you, before you insulate it, remove all the external plastic body mouldings and apply silicone on the clips then reassemble, they let water in when it rains, lots of how to videos on you tube, also that flooring you removed is the perfect template to cut round if you plan to fit a ply floor and vinyl flooring on top, ps my sprinters done over 200,000 miles and still drives like new so don’t worry about excessive mileage, if you look after it, it will look after you, oh and for good sprinter camper tips watch Greg Virgoe on you tube, good luck with your build.
@TheWholeWorldorNothing

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us these tips 😊 We have actually finished our van build though! The first video we released was the tour, you can watch it here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cJ2ECZdryCw.html and we’re working forward from the start of the build now. But they are awesome tips though and we watched a lot of Greg Virgoe, you’re absolutely right he’s a top resource. That’s great to know about the mileage as well, hopefully ours will still be going strong with those miles in. Happy travels 🤗

@@TheWholeWorldorNothing oh didn’t realise you had already built it, but I still enjoy to watch your build, actually my van has done two hundred and thirty four thousand miles and still drives sweet, fingers crossed we can all start travelling soon.

@@TheWholeWorldorNothing Hi. I think the tip about silicon on the clips is relevant and you can still do it even though the van is built as you just remove the trim from the outside. If you look carefully in the video you can see the water stains on some of the clips. This ingress of water will rot your van if not sorted. Good luck!
@TheWholeWorldorNothing
@TheWholeWorldorNothing 3 года назад
We did actually do this at the beginning of our build, we’re putting together a video on it as we speak 😀 It’s definitely something we’d recommend anyone with a Sprinter to do, it’s such an obvious design fault and you’re absolutely right, will rot a van if left untouched.
