Troydan: In football, a receiver (or player running with the football) can fall down for many reasons. It is the duty of the defense to "tag him down". If they don't, then the play continues until either someone does tackle him or in this case, move the ball forward.

In the NFL, if you dive for a catch and catch it whilst on the ground, if you haven't been touched you can get back up and proceed running. It isn't the same in College or HS ball

as long as they don’t get touched, if you dive for a catch, or even have the ball and on the ground, if no one touches you on the other team the play is still alive.
