LBC callers vs presenters: Hamas & Israel edition

Mahmud Abbas has repeatedly asked the Natenyahu government to stop the building of settlements in the West Bank as a precondition to kickstart peace negotiations. How difficult or life threatening was that request?

You can be horrified by both the Hamas attack and the treatment of Palestinians. And its sensible to keep in mind that extreme environments can create extreme people. Understanding that doesn't mean you have to condone Hamas's actions. Why is it so difficult for people to separate understanding with justifying? They're not the same...

She asks him in response to him raising 70 years of horror visited on Palestinians, as to whether that justifies the events of Saturday. No it doesn't. And killing Palestinian civilians in retaliation is similarly not justifiable for the same reason.

I think we can all agree that this war will always bring out the worst in others regardless on who they support. My heart goes out to the innocent who have to bear the burden of this terror show

The Balfour declaration was not an agreement. If it was we would not be in this situation and we the British are responsible for it.

Presenters, don't like it when you disagree with them

The problem with a call in session such as this that is clipped out is you get members of the public, who are not as eloquent in putting their point of views across are shut down by seasoned journalists who talk about these issues day in and day out. I feel it's disingenuous to broadcast a programme like this, it's not a level playing field, and there will only be one winner out of this or that's the way it will appear.

Odd you have not been talking about the past year when 250 civilians had died before Saturday.

The context is poison to rational thought. We can't change what happened last Saturday, but we can seek to minimise the slaughter yet to come. The assault on Gaza will be brutal for innocent Palestinians and extend hostility for decades, resulting in long term harm for both sides. Much of the media is on the wrong side of history in not being explicit about this reality, and the mealy mouthed dodging by our politicians is pathetic. But, again, the context is poison.

Interesting to watch how a conflict such as this can break people's brains and in doing so expose all sorts of latent fissures within different political coalitions.

The James O’Brien show had a caller who was a world expert on situations similar to what’s happening in the Middle East, Unfortunately I cannot remember his name , his take on Israel’s response was quite telling , Bombing gaza so intensely results in a large amount of people loosing their lives, the probable outcome will be felt in the future , it will act as a super recruitment drive for a lot of the surviving youngsters in Palestine , basically it’ll more than likely make things worse in the coming years ,

If we all agree that the Hamas attacks are inexcusable, why is it so difficult to agree that killing innocent Palestinians in response is equally abhorrent? What we’re watching right now is war crimes being committed by a government against an innocent civilian population, and large swathes of the media are actually trying to justify it. The mind boggles.

Nothing justifies Hamas actions and I certainly condemn it, but don’t act like it wasn’t a matter of time before this happened and don’t try to excuse Israel and their revenge/collective punishment. They put a dog in a cage, kicked the cage and starved the dog for years and now they’re acting high and mighty because it bit somebody. Palestinians have been occupied, dehumanised and brutalised, there’s no excuse for what Hamas did but Israel’s arrogance is just as much to blame.

Israel created and maintained the conditions that led to the attacks. Their ‘peace deal’, will include a landgrab, which is what Netanyahu wanted all along. He ignored warnings from US and Egyptian Intelligence days before the attack.

Has Iain Dale confirmed the claim about babies that is now being repeated ad nauseum? I believe the IDF refused to corroborate this claim. Does LBC have some evidence that the IDF doesnt? If not, why is this claim being repeated?

I’m a neutral in all this, I don’t know a single Palestinian and only one Israeli. It seems to me that Israel had near 100% worldwide support for the awful events last week, yet has somehow managed to turn that into defeat already by their extreme comments, and by disproportionate behaviours, and potential crimes against humanity. I’ve just listened to one of the Idf representatives and their sense of fairness about how the two state solution could one day work, is frankly ridiculous. As was the case in Northern Ireland these lands need a just peace, and Israel needs to learn that all the nuclear bombs in the world and their arsenal of weapons won’t bring any kind of peace, it needs a genuine desire for reconciliation however many wrongs have afflicted both enemies.

I usually agree with Sheila, but I'm really disappointed that she seemed to deliberately dismiss what the caller was saying.

Why is it so hard for people to say it's awful for any civilians being murdered? You can support Palestine and not Hamas, support Israelis but not Bibi. All innocent peace loving people are my brothers and sisters.

My sincerest condolences to all those affected by having to listen to LBC.

The frustration for me is the suggestion that this "conflict" is in any way equal. I appreciate Shelagh acknowledging that in her coverage there was a bit of wider context provided to this situation (the media by and large are absolutely not - which is what I think that caller was getting at), but even with that context, I feel like this response from Hamas was inivtable. There's only so much a people can take when their homes are being taken away from them and basically being kept in an open air prison. The Israeli state has illegally occupied the West Bank for years. Palestinians have been mistreated and oppressed by the State for decades before this. There is an apartheid happening and the Israeli state wants to ethnically cleanse Gaza. I genuinely am not excusing the horrific attacks by Hamas, but as the Palestinian ambassador to the UK said, this was absolutely inevitable. The only two outcomes I see - if the Israeli state continues - is horrific bloodshed and retaliation like we saw this past week, or that Palestine and its people are completely wiped out. I'm afraid that both will end up happening.

If both Hamas and extremist elements in the Israeli government are not both held accountable for allowing this situation to fester for this long there will be no way forward. The average Israeli citizen is not interested in expansion and the average Palestinian just wants to be treated with dignity and respect. I find it ironic because both these extremist elements and Hamas are using each other to justify each others goals.

The framing of this whole conflict as being “Hamas Vs Israel” is very deliberate and misleading. People are not supporting Hamas, (it’s actually illegal to do so) - they are supporting Palestinians who have been subjugated to blockades, occupations and relentless dehumanisation for over 50 years. Of course what Hamas did is not acceptable but what is also not acceptable are the conditions that lead a people to carry out such violence. Peace peace peace!

Sorry Shelagh, but you miss the guy's point and you take his criticism of the media response personnaly and you defend yourself. Instead you should take astep back and look at the bigger wider picture the guy is talking about.

Netanyahu supported the rise of hamas in Gaza in an attempt (successfully I might add) to prevent cooperation and unity between Gaza and the west Bank. And that's because he does not want a 2 state solution. People in Israel have called him out for policies and actions that have increased the violence. So no the rise of Hamas is not a "failure" on part of the people of Palestine. The average age of Palestinians in Gaza is 18. They did not vote for or put hamas in power and to pretend that is the case is wrong.

Why only pick out callers who aren’t as articulate

It is widely accepted that Israels treatment of the Palestinians is unacceptable but the terrorist attack by Hamas was atrocious .The supporters of the Palestinians list Israels failings ad infinitum but fail to do the same about Hamas .Hamas knew what the outcome of their terrorist attack would be and they must bear the majority responsibility .

James O' Brien and his LBC researchers HEAVILY screen callers on their opinion and veracity before allowing them on the show. He only allows callers he feels he can manipulate or 'out google'. LBC is a selective conversation.

It's a shame no one talks about the 700,000 Palestinians who were evicted decades back, but were not allowed to return back to Palestine, their home for several generations. No one talks about how the complicity in establishing of what is now suspected of an apartheid state.

What a dreadful inhuman end to this music festival, with, apparently, many supporters of human rights for Palestinians, being killed so brutally. There are no words to describe the depravity of those who carried out this attack. But who thought it appropriate to hold such an event only a stone's throw from the border with Gaza? What does it reveal about even the most liberal of young Israelis' attitudes to Palestinians, whether in the West Bank or Gaza itself, and their long standing documented suffering? Why would those young people choose to attend a rave adjacent to a blighted Gaza? What sort of mindset is it that can accept the relative comfortable existence in Israel, yet at the same time, the trials and tribulations of their neighbours not entering their consciousness? It has been too easy for reasonable Israelis to have the convenience of washing their hands of the activities of the IDF and the illegal settlers, and not think from one year to the next about the suffering and havoc their compatriots have been wreaking. They have been in a self-induced cloud cuckoo land, and, tragically, have been cruelly wrenched from it, and drenched in the reality of their own blood.

Shelagh fogarty states about reporting current news but fails to state the backdrop of history and the atrocities came before. Its not here and now you have to look at whole context to provide a long term solution to thia problem

The caller talking to Iain misses the fact that the blockade was put on gaza in response to Hamas attacks after they were elected in Gaza.
