Yep, I really can't believe that customers wanted to lose the split tailgate. It's one of my favorite features on my LX. It's useful, and minimizes the distance needed to open the tailgate.
I found the Split tailgate very impractical for everyday Life. Its great for Camping. So….yeah. Mixed feelings. I think it’s worth losing that and spending the money elsewhere
For me the deal breaker was always Toyota's refusal to put any technology beyond 2002 in their damn vehicles. More than 1 USB port? holy shit this is like future sci-fi for them.
@@GalaxyGeassS2 hehe. Well. It’s the trade-off for getting a very high quality at a comparably low price tag. I find it still appealing, but of course a Land Rover is in a different league.
Split tailgate is gone,as said,WTF were they thinking, its so versatile. When Disco3/4 was replaced with Disco5 and no split tailgate,it was one of the biggest complaints about the Disco5.
Great review. Your right on the tailgate. I tow a 6mtr plus plate alloy boat with the anchor on the bow sprit. This doesn't allow opening the tailgate up without putting the anchor through it. Unfortunately its a deal breaker for me.
I am an LC 200 owner, had lots of 79s as well, ordered a GR sport, on spec, prior to the car been released, its now delayed until third quarter 2022,, I drove on the last week, (sahara) totally underwhelmed, its an easy NO for me. It's the Ineos grenadier for me, and I keep my LC 200. Game over
Great review. Been waiting ages for this. People will be disappointed as always on any new model. But that will change over time. I've spent a fortune on my 2020 Gxl 200. I won't do that again anytime soon. Can't wait to see the mods people do on these 300s soon.
A very unbiased review no hype. I personally am not keen on the 300 has to many shortcomings for me compared to my 200 VX but im sure it will be a great car. No split tailgate sucks. On the issue of tyres my vx runs 18s as factory issued i fitted ROH rims which fit over the larger front caliper and are fitted with BFG 17s Great work👍
Wow, first review I’ve seen with some negative comments so well done there. Funny how Toyota left the crease line where the split tailgate would have gone. I wonder if the aftermarket guys will offer a conversion back to a split tailgate. I think the one piece gate is a weight saving exercise as that lower tailgate is quite heavy. Personally I think the center screen looks like a tacked on after market job and will date very quickly. One improvement I DO like is it’s lose of the bum up stance and the car now sits level. As for the V6, only time will tell but even if Toyota has done what seems like a lot of whiz bangery the old saying still rings true: There’s no substitute for cubic inches. You can’t get around the fact that if an engine is smaller it has to work harder to do the same amount of work. I don’t think a 7% or 200kg weight saving will make up for the drop in capacity and as for the 10 speed transmission, again it will help make the car perform better but that transmission is working a lot harder and changing gears a lot more often. Again more wear and with you guys already working out how much junk you can bolt on it will be easy to see the weight increase from 2500kg to over 3000kg pretty quickly. There is always a compromise and in this case it may be longevity. Even so, Toyota will sell as many as they can make as there is no real competition. With most people that buy Nissan Patrols the first thing they point out is how much cheaper they are than Cruisers. But Toyotas dominate in the dealer network, after market and resale values and the Cruiser is the bench mark to which all others are compared to for a reason. I won’t be in a hurry to upgrade my 2020 Sahara. Cheers Stuart.
Top review mate. 100% agree that Toyota dropped the ball on the not having the split tailgate. Not only with it being so useful as you mentioned, the real downside will be the boat owners who definitely won’t be able to open the back fully as the anchor/bow sprit protrudes out a fair bit. Not a total deal breaker, but I do like the 200 series set up better in that regard.
And they say,"We always listen to our customers"Obviosly NOT.That missing split tailgate is unforgivable. They could have at least made the window to lift seperatly.
Beautiful review. The camera was a little far from the controls. The split fold tailgate makes the hind looks flat. i love the body details and the front grill plus the gear leaver is beautiful and massive. Good work mate.
Where was the intro filmed? That lookout looks worth a visit... Awesome review, its out of my price range at the moment anyway but if i was in the market the lack of a tailgate would be a deal breaker. When I eventually do upgrade from my 105 I'd probably pass on the 300 and go with a 200 instead. Just dont see the reason to buy a 300
Great info, with all the mods you spoke about. Will I be able to put family of 4 in there and tow with out upgrading the GVM which hasn’t been mentioned yet. Are Toyota hoping the after market sector will sort this so Toyota can cancel or disclaim any future blame/warranty. What’s the roof capacity if we want to put on roof rack LC200 has 200kg has this been retained or increased? Bullbar and winch, which models can fit winch and bar? The interior is a huge step for Toyota but lacks current technology. In 2 years time it will be 5years behind.
Bloody great review. Were they Prado / Hulix rims ???. Will be interesting where to mount both a dual battery, air compressor . Have they gone back to a smart alternator??? Rear tailgate - will be a pain, similar to the Mitsubishi L300 work vans. Try opening/ accessing when a another car parked behind you. The interior & safety specs are a big improvement.👍
The wheel studs are 14mm, not 12mm like you normally get with 6 stud wheels. Looked like it was a bit tight getting the wheel on and I'm guessing the tapered nuts didn't make much contact. Do you think this is an issue that will mean you'll need aftermarket wheels that are made for 14mm studs and therefore special to the 300?
Was waiting to see how it towed, but alas we have to wait for the second part.Just curious who on earth is going to buy a new 300 series drop 110K for the base model , then drop another 15 -20 grand to make it track ready??..Not sure who you are aiming this video for. Even the boys in 24/7 rarely see new cars tackling the hard tracks. The only people who buy this car will be the Toorak tractor set and the retirees doing their big lap. Again no people who will be modifying their car too much. Keen to see next week's video and see who people will modify their cars for touring and towing vans(which is what really people buy NEW land cruiser for!). Also thanks for the look of the new Landcruiser without the sales spin!. From what you have shown is looks alright, not sure what people are angry about. Waiting to see what you think of the new engine and how it compared to the V8. That will be fun to watch!.
Good points but I think you’ll be surprised at how many new cars are equipped straight from factory for outback touring. We work next to ARB Thornleigh and they have brand new $100k+ models in for full fit outs daily. 24/7 is entertainment, not many ppl tackle tracks like that on long trips, they are the kinds of tracks you do as a weekend warrior. An outback tourer is setup different to a rock crawler for obvious reasons. As a tow car it’s great, we’ll miss the noise and feel of the V8 but the new engine and gearbox combination go well together.
Agree with Signature Camper comments. We dropped 20k into our 100 series after we bought it new, with everything we did need....2006. The new 300, in a couple of years time will still be relevant to our needs, as it has all we may ever want, bar personalised storage system.
@@robyncrighton1255 And did you go bush bashing the first week you got the car?. I get it lots of people put gear on their new truck, but I don't know too many that will take their brand new car on really tough tracks right off the bat. Thats all I was saying. There will always be one that is wealthy enough who can afford to take their new 100k truck out and really test it! I cant wait till some does this, take a new 300 with some kit on it and give it a real bash and see if comes out the other side, now that would be interesting viewing.
@@SignatureCamperTrailers maybe look at the 300 in this light, touring, Equipment, bullbar, roof rack, maxtrax, + battery, tow ball weight, long range tank, full fuel. But you can’t get in car because it will be over GVM. Also GR can’t put winch on bar due to safety system. Oh what a feeling Toyota
@@Mixos_place yes Michael, we did. First trip was across the Simpson with our ARB rooftop tent and awning. Travel out bush somewhere every year. Although the 100 has only done 240,000 most of its life it has been towing something..boats caravan and TVan. So fortunately we have all the STUFF we need..having said that...the winch is off. We have never used it. Should we get a new 300, we still should be able to get good money for our 100
Not none that will outlast this one. If you're buying with the intention of selling or trading in, then there are other better options. If you are buying for a car to keep for 30 years it's worth it.
Spot on - when we had this car they hadn’t released anything about the new rear tank. Sounds like we were pretty accurate with our estimate of what could go in that spot, lol.
Hello. Thanks for great information LC200 & LC300 are they different on rear chassis structure? The question is can I put LC200 Old (Brink tow bar ) to LC300 ??? Much appreciated
Whats the big deal about the tailgate? The advantage would be when its pissing down rain, or for when your missus has to load your car with a Pram etc.... why did you make it such a thing?
Good question - these days cars are generally “run-in” from factory. They still recommend you take it easy for the first 1000km but there aren’t any restrictions like when buying a new car from a few years ago.
Geeze!! thought if you are doing a tow test you would tow something more substantial than a portaloo... maybe like a 3.5 ton van, as this is why you would buy a vehicle of this caliber..bit disappointing you didn't t really test it
The rear tailgate is a horses Ar#$e in my view - just painful! 🥵 A show stopper for me as per the review in terms of WHY the split tailgate is essential!
In my opinion, the new LC300 lets the model down badly in the engine department. Admittedly, direct from the factory, the LC300 has a little more power & torque than the outgoing LC200. However, in reality, Toyota has 'tricked up' a stressed V6 to appear superior to a lazy V8 in an attempt to satisfy government demands for smaller, greener, more efficient engines, whilst 'pulling the wool' over buyers eyes in making them feel comfortable with what is actually a retrograde step in terms of reliability and the potential for exciting engine power & torque upgrades. For instance, a Steinbauer Power Module will safely increase power & torque in the V8 by over 30% yielding figures of 260kW & 850Nm respectively. Try getting that out of the V6 without blowing it to the Scheissenhausen!!! For what it's worth (probably nothing), I have voiced my concerns direct with Toyota. We need many more to do the same. Looks like I'll be keeping my LC200 Sahara V8 for many years to come!
As much as I love my grandpa’s LC200 GXL, I drove a LC300 Sahara a week ago, and I personally think it’s a better car in every way, very torquey, it wasn’t “stressed” like what other people think it is without even taking it for a test drive… mind you I love the V8 very much, has a great note and is easy to drive and is amazing, but it’s a 15 year old engine, and this new engine is moving forward with modern times. Once I have some $ I’ll be ordering a GR Sport LC300.. ofc though everyone has their own opinions on the new car, some like it, others don’t, and that’s the same with other LC models.. 👍🏻
Your testing a not 35" tire with the vehicle in the air. Put it on the ground and test the steering wheel!. Not that it matters, people with lots of money but not much sense are going to buy this. I can see hardened Toyota fans hanging themselves when they go looking for a new Toyota.
It will take time for some to come around to this - the same thing happened when the 200 was released. As for the bigger wheel - it needs a suspension lift to make it work properly. Clearance was always the main concern with the 200 needing a bit of cutting to work.
@@SignatureCamperTrailers I'm sorry but this vehicle is a fail from every aspect. It's so ugly that the only reason I watched the video was to see if it was going to be an apology video. It really is terrible and having no tailgate is probably the least of it's problems.
Great review, crap car. Toyota doing the bare minimum as usual. The interior already looks dated. Fanboys will still buy it, so the aftermarket will do great selling things to make it a better car. Tailgate is a complete stuff up.
Yeh, it’s the cheap one, only 110k. Seriously makes no sense. For off-road extreme, you would do to much damage to justify pounding the heck out of one of these, and towing ? Meh ! , so another over priced grocery getter, that tows a boat on a rough road.
Love the new tailgate I have been waiting years for Toyota to finally fit this to the cruiser best new feature of the car. won’t get wet when it rains .can add slide outs to use as bench and have a roof above your head . No brainer to me.Not so keen on the use of aluminium on the removable body panels.
What a design tragedy! The 2022 Land Cruiser 300 Series loses its split tailgate! On our LC200 we use the lower split tailgate all the time, to stand on, to sit on, as a table, as a workbench, as a place to put computers, cameras, drones etc etc etc, whilst the upper split provides protection from sun and rain. The one-piece tailgate on the new LC300 removes all of that fun and convenience and would absolutely stop us from buying one. Additionally, on LC300 the mounting of spare wheel carriers would result in both wheels having to be swung out to enable the tailgate to be opened, rather than the simple opening of the upper tailgate on LC200, without even having to touch the spare wheels. And another point - when a boat or caravan with stone-guard is hitched up, the swing of the tailgate is such that it may not be openable. Certainly, standing behind the tailgate to open it will be at best awkward and may be impossible. The whole thing is utterly ridiculous. What was Toyota thinking???
Great review, if the split tailgate is the only real issue, given the number of slide out compartments from within the internal rear luggage area you put in your vehicle. I carry a table as a work area as the slide out BBQ/sink take up a fair amount or room. It does seem to me that the interior, engine, driveability (by all reviews) leaves the 200 a long way behind. I watched a drag race between the 200 series and the basic 300, just not a race the 300 was much better, less noisy in all facets of exterior noise, again no spit gate....move on. I have ordered the new 300 and cant wait to get hold of it..
Congrats - you’ll love the new cruiser when it arrives. The split tailgate was a feature for us which made it a landcruiser - it was unique and a functional design. Everyone sets their car up different and there will be solutions as you’ve mentioned. We use the design of the split tailgate, from keeping the dogs in when in the back to using it as a workbench - it’s hugely functional and as a work car those things matter. That’s just how we use it and our experience. Thanks for the feedback and your thoughts!
@@SignatureCamperTrailers Good call re: the dogs. I have 3 dogs and my 300 has just arrived. Bummer. Didn't know there was no split gate when I ordered it and carting the dogs around with me is one of my main things I wanted to be able to do. Also the split gate helps to keep horses heads out of the back as well!
Great review no doubt a beautiful tough truck. However the tail gate is shit so won’t be buying one. Doesn’t even have an electric rear window so you can throw things in the back if jammed in in a parallel park spot.
Good review BUT - the mods you are suggesting cannot be done in reality. Bullbar& winch, 2nd battery required for winch, extra fuel tank 150l +150l fuel, rear bar, ridiculous wheels & tyres (because you can't legally go from +60 offset to +0 offset, let alone wider rims) and for most people a lift with heavier springs and a drawer system with fridge. By the time you have added all this (some of it illegal) your payload of 600kg has more than disappeared without even a driver being able to get in.
The 200 series had similar payload, as does the Patrol and most 4wds. In all those vehicles those mods are done plus more. Hence why several companies offer GVM upgrades. Those mods can be done and you will see in time some seriously kitted out 300 series Landcruisers! We are looking forward to some epic builds.
@@SignatureCamperTrailers GVM upgrade is only slightly useful if you don't plan to tow. If you want to tow what Toyota says you can (3500kg) you can't really do ANY mods. If you go for GVM upgrade plus mods your GCM won't change, so then you cannot tow anywhere near 3500kg. Just because many 200s are kitted out, doesn't make them legal. The skinnier tyres on the 300 makes it even harder to go wider tyres and stay legal, and please don't tell people they can go from +60 wheel to a +0 wheel with a wider rim and tyre and be legal. Just a big NO to that one.
Toyota techs at our dealer already hate the mechanical side. pretty much a crapped jungle inside, fuel filter is in a terrible spot and a bullbar takes ages to do, took our tech over 2 days. hopefully they make a relocation kit for the fuel filter. Over all its pretty much for the city person or road travellers towing a van. It just doesn't feel its been designed with offroad in mind
No good for vans with that tailgate. Extended draw bars for caravan manufacturers to take under consideration. One of the most convenient features of the 200 was the split tailgate. Also looks an expensive vehicle for slight modifications. Tyres on off road vans - vehicle / van swaps maybe a bit of an issue. Surprised that Toyota decided to go with the lift up tail gate.
Good review. Not impressed with the car. They’ve Prado’d the Landcruiser and Goldleafed the price. Those big wheels are not going to fit, lots and lots of plastic, it’s not an off road car.
Have an American bought Landcruiser 2021 Heritage Edition. I’m glad I bought it and it seems like this new one fails miserably in what the Landcruiser offered.
I personally don’t like the front, or the back tailgate. I’m not sure it’s going to tow my 19ft, full size, duel axel off road van. Hope I’m wrong. Not sure I’m going to pay that much for this current product. Think I’ll wait and see how it goes. Pretty good review.
The second battery in an engine bay is almost pointless thease days. With 220+amps alternator you wouldn't even need it with winching. On 100k+ 4wd youd have lithium and something like a Safiery Scotty
I expect it will be the aftermarket guys to the rescue for the Lc300 no thanks to Toyota, so like my old 79 series, have to budget 20k to fix the LC 300 on top sticker price..... Just great 🙄
Would have been nice to see the other side of 17"' wheel when fitted looks like a cig paper wouldn't fit. They've improved the interior and nothing else.....
