After debating for years among our mates Donny and I decided to ask ourselves the tough questions on which of our 4495 GVM upgraded landcruisers is the best option for Aussie Travellers! Which do you think is the better option?
If there's anything I missed let me know in the comments!

There is no value for money in the 79. 1970’s interior and seat upgrades needed, manual gearbox, leaf spring suspension, rear track widening required, 430 NM of tq so engine upgrades required, the only redeeming features are factory locking diffs and solid front axle. The 200 has factory coils all round, auto box, 650nm of tq, proper interior comfort, bigger chassis. I’m thinking buy a 200 series add rear locker and 2 inch lift, 34 inch tyres and a good camper trailer like a Patriot x1 and you have the best of both worlds as you can dump the camper trailer and go good in the rough stuff cause you still relatively light and short. Add the camper x1 camper trailer and you have what is included in a very expensive 200 chopped rear canopy.

Agree with ur comment but better to buy an older 200 petrol and LS 6l80 swap it. I wrote a comment about good and bad LS swaps and talked about a good idea I had for them completely different to anything that gets done in Aus.

100 series. - 1HDFTE is arguably the best Toyota engine ever made. Bulletproof & can easily be tuned to get 1000NM + torque and 400+ HP. - Unlike the 200 no unnecessary electronics that always fail eventually. Still the old shifter to get low range. - Still way more comfortable that a stock 79. These were considered a luxury car back in the late 90s - 2005. - If you want solid front axle can always go the 105 series. 100 series body on a 105 chassis is common. - Can still find them with under 150000 km if you're patient, although it's getting harder and harder. - Can buy the car & mod them to have pretty much everything you see in this video for, I dunno.... $80k-100k less than what these guys have spent? - LS, barra, cummins, duramax, chevy - tons of engine swaps possible if you want to go crazy and make it a monster.

Real nice comparison. Having owned the 200 series, taken to many of the hard places in Oz, yep, it is a hell of a machine. Power, comfort, strength. However, weight, weight, weight... Damn, it is heavy. Kerb weight difference between the LC79 and 200 off the showroom floor is almost 500kg. While the conversions might bring them a little closer, it is possibly another advantage for the 79. If off-road ability is important, where lower-weight or higher payload, more articulation and flex, bigger tyres, higher lift, better flotation, better front-end durability are all there for the 79 series, it might edge it ahead in some scenarios, especially once it has the auto box (which also has torque lockup in any gear for ultimate crawl control). But, that extra comfort of the 200, well... 'apples to apples', 'horses for courses', as you might have mentioned at least a hundred or so times, yep both vehicles have their place. Nice job boys.

79 for reliability and better offroad for harder tracks and easy to the work. the 70 series are everywhere so that means parts are easy to find compared to the 200 as they are popular but parts are less common to find off the shelf

I’ve done the same with the Jmacx 4495gvm upgrade to a 79. Personally a lot simpler vehicle than the 200, I just wasn’t up for all the electronics in a 200 - the 79 being a simple farm truck was exactly what I was after. Really wasn’t interested in a IFS front end either, coming from a patrol wanted that extra reliability of a live front axel. Easy choice 79 all day every day 😎

I have a coiled 79, (not stretched) the best mod I’ve done to it besides the coils is a recaro. I also prefer manual. The only advantage to a 200 is more room in the back seat and more power. 79’s look way better, are way more capable Offroad and have a tougher front solid axle.

I would say rough offroad tracks a solid axel is just a little better behaved as IFS bounce a little more from my experience, but will agree with the 200 on road and dirt roads will be more comfortable. But the 79 has the more resilient axle type on front and twin lockers so ability is there. Overall I would probably want a 79 more as I enjoy driving them.

Good video guys! Now need to do an honest comparison between ram 1500 diesel and petrol, chopped 200 and 79 dual cab. Also I think you were a bit steep on the 200 cost to covert at 69k. It was not mentioned but the pre registration chop of the 200 series allows the vehicle to be registered as a utility rather than a luxury car. This massively reduces the tax that you pay when the car is registered. Something that was not included in the discussion around prices. Personally i would probably pick the 200, but no way in hell I would feel comfortable spending 120-160k on a 4wd. Coming from suzuki's i just start counting the number of builds i could make for the same price haha. But then again the price of the new jimny is well past crazy now. Each to their own haha.

All is work out which vehicle has most damage when off road tough n rough conditions across Australia. Find the full diff and wishbone and diff you’ll know which will cause damage is what wishbone is the most problem when it’s come to wear out is boots and shaft on wishbone, so 79 has full diff which is more tough for rough conditions as 200 are best for normal conditions. I’ll let you thinking though out both 79 and 200 GXL landcruiser. Cheers 👌😉👍
