Other notable Dominicans of French descent: 🔵Emilio Prud'Homme: composed the Dominican national anthem 🔴Rafael Filiberto Bonnelly- DR president from 1962-63 Hey guys! So I think I want to do a video about all the Asian cultures that came to the Caribbean, as well as a deeper look into the specific African tribes our black ancestry descends from...thoughts??
A lot of people don't know that colonial Santo Domingo was united with Saint Domingue when it was owned by the French between 1795 - 1809 & it was united again with Haiti to free Dominicans from slavery & united the island against Spain & France between 1822 - 1844
Your video was awesome I’m one of those Of French Dominican Decent My Great Grandfather Was Gastón Fernando Deligne Son A French Royal Navy captain Alfred Jules Deligne I came from one of those families that kept a lot of their European traditions and who you marry was very important to keep the family as pure breed as possible thank you this is the closest information of how I have grown up no I don’t feel so alone because you explain that and they look at you like you have two heads specially here in the United States not so uncommon in the Dominican republic because there’s a lot of families like thatThanks for your work
I absolutely love this video... short and to the point. And this makes so much sense to me now!!! When I did my Ancestry test, I was shocked that my European side was mostly composed of French and Portuguese with a small percent of Spanish. I thought I would have much more Spanish and wondered where all that Portuguese and French came from. I did some research on it and also heard another RU-vidr make a comment about Dominicans in the Cibao region of French descent due to French colonizers who crossed over from Haiti. So that makes sense. I was still puzzled about the Portuguese ancestry which in my case was the largest European amount, followed by French. I initially contributed it to either having ancestors from that part of the Iberian peninsula or ancestors who simply immigrated at some point. But now it’s very clear to me. Thank you so much for such insightful videos VivaBella by Xtina.
You're welcome! Yea I had the same initial thoughts as you; I had both my parents do the test as well and I was surprised to see my dad had much more Portuguese and French than Spanish, and then someone also explained to me that's because a lot of them settled in the Cibao region, which is where my family is from. The Portuguese also influenced the accent of the Spanish spoken in the Cibao as well.
VivaBella by Xtina Yes. My results were pretty much on point considering that my dads side is from el Cibao and all the European came from that side as opposed to my moms side that’s from the south, mostly Santo Domingo and San Cristobal and have mostly African descent. When you look at the history of the island, it just makes sense why the south looks distinctively different from many provinces in the north. It’s because the populations and settlers were of different ethnicities. It’s what I love the most about being Dominican! Our beautiful variety!
Wow; I didn't know about any of this! THIS is what's missing in our public education. Please send these to ALL educational institutions; it is sooooo needed!😱😱😱
I just came back from Santiago , not shocked , . I saw A lot of Dominicans looks just like White folks . Sad how Americans convinced me about my own people , like we not diverse.smh. I love Us!
Wow, not surprised at all. Thank you for the video, much appreciate it. Whoa, Joaquín Balaguer has some French blood in him? I did not even know that. My cousin Nelly Abreu used to always tell us that she has a great great grandfather who was from Portugal. I said no wonder because Abreu is a Portuguese surname. History is so amazing and fascinating, isn't it? There are a few more Dominicans and Cubans with that last name. Many people will assume that any Dominican with a French last name, they will assume that person is Haitian lol. As if Haitians are the only people with French last names. The French people sure did get around, didn't they? Not only in Haiti, they also colonized the other islands of the Caribbean known as Martinique and Guadeloupe, French Guiana in South America, they settled in the southern region of the united states mainly in Louisiana and in eastern Canada known as Quebec. Hey XTina when you have a chance or if you haven't yet, try to do a video on the Cocolos in the DR. My Dominican friend named Juan David who is a friend of the family, he says he's a Cocolos and his father is from San Pedro de Macorís where there are many Cocolos and his mom is from Villa consuelo santo domingo. They are all in the Bronx and they are best friends with my aunt Carolina Rosa , my second cousin Fernanda and my uncle Rubén. By the way Juan said that his great grandfather is from virgin gorda which is a part of the british virgin islands.
@@VivaBellabyXtina plus not only that XTina. Didn't I mention to you that on my father's side of the family who is originally from Turks and Caicos, a few relatives from way back in the early 20th century settled in the Dominican Republic too. My father and my grandmother told us that our grandfather, her husband, Joseph Bell who has an uncle named Emmanuel Bell who migrated to puerto plata Dominican Republic from the islands of Turks and Caicos along with a few other islanders. When I was told that, i said damn, I have more relatives in the DR than I thought. So a few relatives on my paternal side are Dominican Cocolos lol.
My dad is from Santiago and my mom has is from monte cristi but on my mom side, is “supposedly”of French descent..why? Because me last name is pascal.she told me that her dad and her dads brother was French and if I remember correctly that her dads brother could only speak French.in high school my math teacher thought I was a descendant of Blaise pascal.and since then I’ve been trying to find out if I actually am of French descent but it’s a quite a challenge lol to figure it out alone.soon when I go to dr with my family imma ask my dad if we can check out the archives there in dr and see if can get any luck. Edit 2nd time:, só I found out that Im Spanish,Portuguese,African, native Indian,European and Dominican 🤭
Hispaniola (Saint Domingue/Santo Domingo) settlers colonized the Caribbean Colonies of Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Margarita, Curacao, Venezuela, Louisiana, Florida, Lowcountry, Tidewater, Bermuda. So millions of us have Hispaniola Blood!
No wonder there are a lot of African Americans with French last names. A lot of creoles and cajuns who are southern whites of French origin. For example, football legend, Brett Favre who is from Mississippi, is cajun. Brett is of French descent. His last name Favre is definitely French. WB DuBois who is a great icon in African American history, heck I am assuming he has some French blood in him due to his last name. Someone, plz correct me if i'm wrong about DuBois. I also heard he was against Marcus Garvey but that's a different topic lol.
@@VivaBellabyXtina Nope. They mostly came directly from France. The "Latin Quarter" in New Orleans is actually Spanish. Spain was the official colonizer of Lousiana. The French was like the a gangster that took over.
@@MrAmharaDude I said a lot not all... yo why you always tryna jump and correct me on something lol. And yes I know that territory belonged to the Spanish and later the French. I was just saying *some* of their French ancestry came from the Frenchman of Haiti as well.
You do realize the the Canary Islands are a part of Africa? It's similar to how Guadeloupe and Martinique are a part of France but is located in the Caribbean. Not to mention Canary Islands natives are from Africa. ( North and South)
Yes it belongs to the African plate and the natives are African but it is an autonomous community of Spain. People of Spanish descent are the largest population there.
@@VivaBellabyXtina yes sure is. Just like the Azores are an autonomous community of Portugal and most people there are of Portuguese descent with an African minority from former Portuguese colonies.
@@VivaBellabyXtina Yeah but African descent is the majority. Many Black-Hispanics have migrated from Latin America. Especially Afro-Colombians. Heck. Europe is full of Black people. Including Spain. Yall need to put the books down and travel. LOL
@@MrAmhara I never said there were not black people there...?? Lol.. I was simply talking about the Spanish ones that came to DR. Well we can't all afford to travel the world homie lol sooo in the meantime gotta stick to books/videos.
