Here at www.lightspeedspanish.co.uk/ we are pleased to offer you a radical new way of looking at verb tenses and pronouns. Here, Gordon uses the KISS system to make things that much easier for students of the Spanish language. He also has a good old rant! Listen in.

Hello from Calgary! You nailed it Gordan! Shines some light on the reasons for the success of Michel Thomas. He shared your contempt of the over-complicated terminology, and didn't overload students with irrelevant information. When you and Cynthia teach, it's very easy-listening stuff; no heaps of grammatical terminology, you keep everything light and it's all very easy to relate to. Love you guys! Michael

Muchas gracias. You won me over with the "rant". Been trying to learn Spanish with a phone app and RU-vid videos, but your take on the hurdles to learning a language being increased by having to digest the "haute grammer" is SO spot on.

I certainly agree that there is a certain elitist and non-learner-friendly component in the jargon of many disciplines (whether its chemistry or linguistics). And I agree that language-learners should learn the way that best helps them. However, it is important to understand that, in linguistics, these technical terms exist because not all languages function the same or convey concepts equally. For example, Basque (another Spanish language) uses "ergative markers" and "mesoclisis" in order to convey the same concept as direct and indirect pronouns do in English or Spanish. Since Basque is such a radically-different language than either English or Spanish, it would be impossible to convey the exact meaning of its ergatives into English by using this method. In essence, these terms were designed to aid linguists in analyzing and studying languages rather than in helping learners learn. BTW, the "perfect" is from Latin "per" ("for" in Spanish por) and "factus" ("done" in Spanish hecho). So in Latin it sort of makes sense (it is the "done" tense, the "hecho" tense because it implies the thing was "done" during sometime in the past). :)

At times we need to throw tantrum to be able to emphasize our great ideas. "Rebelling" the rules, you Sire Gordon are practically helping us beginners of the spanish language find the easier route. In my country, English is not the native tongue,but I personnally find it easier to learn.There's just too many lo la les to memorize in espanol,but thats challenging me all the more: to study (espanol).I love it actually. Thanx for ur FREE help,jajajajaj! More power to both you and Cynthia!

In Germany my daughter who is 8 is learning grammar rules already. She has for example come home with homework to identify nouns, verbs or adjectives in a text and underline in different colours. I was surprised that my British husband didn't know much about it, obviously this is normal for Britain. I guess German has a more complicated grammar so here we just learn it in the German lessons along with spelling and so on and I have to say I don't have a problem to understand the ideas and terminology of the grammar rules in Spanish. Remembering it is another matter...

In England grammar is not taught to such an old age and in so much depth (at least not in the schools I went to). I grew up not knowing more than past, present and future. Only since doing a TEFL course and coming to Spain am I learning about all these other tenses!! Obviously I use them all the time but I've never looked into the language so much. In Spain everyone seems to pretty hot on their grammar. And I've been told many times that it's very unusual for a native Spanish speaker to make grammatical mistakes ever while writing or speaking.

Ramblings of the Jewbans we do grammar mistakes but we recognice them . Madrileños know that they are laistas and leistas , and can avoid it if they want I am galician and I knew that I used the first form of subjunctive as a pluscuamperfect because of galician lanfuage , I also dont use the pressent perfect till I moved outside Galicia , but I knew how to use it from school and tv .

Well, than you have declensions and cases like disjunctive, perlative, ellative etc. And verbs, oh god, you've got voices (like active, passive, incoative and terminative), tenses (like present, pluperfect, future perfect) and moods. Tons and tons of moods like indicative, subjunctive, jussive and even such things like ADMIRATIVE. I DO AGREE WITH YOU.

I have a question which might not be very related to your video. Can you tell us the most important tenses in Spanish. I know that my question might not be fair and logical. However, as a new learner, I would like to know the tenses which I have to focus on at first. And I am talking about the tenses from a conjugation point of view--- if that is even a correct sentence. You know there are so many tenses in Spanish and unlike English most tenses have their own conjugations. Any help ?
@LightSpeedSpanishChannel
@LightSpeedSpanishChannel 7 лет назад
Uff... That's a difficult question and I don't think it has an easy answer. I'm afraid I'd say all of them are necessary to formulate coherent sentences. On a daily basis we use all the tenses in present, past and future. If you want to pin me down then Present, Preterite and Imperfect, the verb IR to create the future (voy a comer, voy a ver...), command and subjuntive. To start focus on Present, then Present continuous, then Futures, then Present Perfect, Past tenses, Perfect Tenses, Subjuntive and commands. Cynthia x

I sometimes get confused with placement "Te", "Me", "Le", "Les", "Nos", "Se",when placing them in a sentence. I know how to place Me, Te, Le,Les, Nos, in I guess present perfect Simple Like " I need to by her a gift" Necesito Comparle un regarlo", or "Thanks for helping me "Gracias por ayudarme" , but I have problems with using the pronouns in Simple Present for example I always have issues placing "Me" in a sentence like "You can help me", "usted me puede ayudar" I never no where to put the "me" in other pronouns in direct statements.

I would like to add three other reasons to throw a tantrum: Textbooks frequently say there are two past tenses in Spanish Nuts! There are three (not counting subjunctives) -Preterits, Imperfects and Perfects Also some textbooks lump the Present Perfect in with the Present Tense when it is a Past Tense Perfect. Why do texts fail to mention there are 6 different ways to express the future?

100% agree with you Gordon! I haaate those words, all of them, and I think that's why I really hate learning grammar and tend to spend more time memorizing phrases and watching TV/listening to and repeating natural speech. Which helps a lot with my understanding, pronunciation and conversational Spanish, but really means my writing suffers. When I was (trying) to learn German I remember having to learn all this "Dative, genetive, accusative" crap and honestly...I just wanted to throw my books at the wall. It's worse! Because you find that English teachers have two different names for the Spanish tenses and when you get a Spanish professor he/she also has two different Spanish names for each tense! The more technical the prof gets (when all past tenses are preterite............) you can take preterite to mean past and (from your example) the present perfect in English becomes the preterito perfecto in Spanish! I would council that all teachers use the Spanish technical descriptions. They are in fact less confusing and everyone would be talking the same language (or at least the same three languages English, Spanish and Spanish conjugation as opposed to six - English, English grammar names, English names for Spanish grammar, Spanish simple names for Spanish grammar and Spanish technical names for Spanish grammar).Confused - we all are!

How can you learn a foreign language if you can't even tell the difference between noun, verb and adjective? It seems to me that Gordon's stance is one that reflects the' problem Anglos have with grammar. If 80 per cent of English speakers don't know basic grammar, it's their fault. It doesn't mean the rest of the world has to dumb down to accommodate them. Just my opinion, of course.

We do try to accomodate everybody and it's not always possible. Teachers tend to assume that their students know the basics but, at times, they don't but they won't say they don't, so, to make them feel at ease we quickly explain what those are and eveyone is happy (we hope) :)

Everybody speaks out of his/her own experience and culture. I deem myself lucky to have attended primary school (in Italy) when grammar wasn't the watered down BS that it is now. It helped me a lot, but of course, as I said, everybody's experience is different. Nonetheless, as far as nouns, verbs and adjectives are concerned, I stand my point. I didn't mean to insult. If I came across that way, I apologise. Forgive my English.
