A great sound from a great racecar , one of historys most sexy racecars ever ! The roar off the V8 and whine of the gearbox make a perfect harmony , creating one of the greatest carsounds ever , only surpassed by the BRM V16 wich is from another planet .
This gives a good impression of what the racing was like back in the 1960s when the Fords and Ferraris were on the same circuit as the slower Alpine A210 Renault sports cars. The image starting @2:05 shows what it is like to have a 200 mph - 322 km/h top performance sports car having to pass a car that was at 40 ~ 50 mph -- or -- 64 ~ 81 km/h slower along the Mulsanne straight. And imagine doing that at night!?
Just imagine how depressing it would be driving your expensively prepared race car around the circuit and a T70 speeds past as if you were crawling; such a beast.
OMG Jimmy I was On a Boat a Hydro with a Ford Supercharged 427 I was not seatbelted in..........................OMG I WAS SCREAMING TO HIGH HEAVEN MY LIFE IS OVER It is till I Looked over!!!!
That's a really good question. This car clearly has a better (quicker shift) transmission than a period T70 - check out Dario Franchitti's comments in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-81uMpafSwxo.html I also think that the tyres are probably a bit better on this car, and damping technology has also improved massively since the 1960s, so the car in this video most likely has better grip. All-in-all I guess I'm saying this car might be capable of a faster lap than an in-period car.
Add to that that the engine is vastly improved and so is the fuel so potentially more power. What HASN'T changed are the aerodynamics. They are still the 1960s school of 'If it looks right, it is right' school. And at a potential 200+ mph on the Mulsanne, that is going to be the biggest limiting factor.
Even in the '60's racing sports cars (Austin-Healey Sprites on up --so assume this Lola had one too--) had hoop-type Roll Bars: Not a full Roll Cage. Just a "Roll Bar" steel upside-down U shape with reinforcements, across the interior behind the driver's seat. It wouldn't show in this video. (Unless he turned to look behind him, haha.)
I don't recall the Lola T70 being all that successful. It was popular but weren't the 917's killing everyone in the late 60's and early 70's. Then along came the Ferrari 512M and the goal post was moved again.
