I saw this engine in another video, it was on a stand and running…. I had to get my mind around how such a thing worked! I haven’t had this much fun since I learned the refrigeration cycle! Thank you, whoever you are, for doing such an awesome and intricate job on this. Great work…… !!!!

I have a question. Where fuel is sucked from the carburetor into the cylinder. From the carburetor I go through the shaft and later ???
@pierrejansen2702
@pierrejansen2702 Год назад
The fuel is drawn from the carburetor, through the hollow crankshaft into the crankcase. Next the fuel is sucked into the cylinder through the induction pipes (9). Each cylinder head contains an inlet valve, through which the fuel will be drawn into the cylinder. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching !!

Thank you for your response. Indeed, all was designed without computers. Just pencil on paper and perhaps a Faber "Castell" slide ruler. Remarkable pieces of engineering and it worked, but the mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) wasn't that long. Nothing compared to today's modern engines. Danke fürs Zuschauen und Grüße aus Holland !!

I was wondering.... (great video BTW) the Focker DViii was powered by this engine (J version) and it came out towards the last moments of WW1,why use this antiquated engine (just my opinion) engine and not a more advanced water cooled engine like a Mercedes or BMW? what was the reason behind this? I edited my comment cause i wanted to add,i didn't mean the engine wan antiquated,it is a work of art really but i mean a water cooled engine is more simple and i would say safer that something like this.
@pierrejansen2702
@pierrejansen2702 3 месяца назад
Thanks for your compliment ! The answer is weight. Weight was an important issue during the early days of aviation. Rotary engines have no need for cooling liquid, pipes, water jackets, radiator or batteries. They provided excellent self-cooling. The rotating crankcase/cylinder assembly created its own cooling airflow, even with the aircraft at rest. Because of the rotating mass, no flywheel is needed. They provided and excellent power to weight ratio. Thanks for watching !!

@@pierrejansen2702 probably a few wrecks buried in the mud in France, I wonder how deep into the Somme an engine (once most of the surrounding aircraft has burnt away) penetrates from say 10,000 feet?
@dntlss
@dntlss 3 месяца назад
Probably not very deep in those little kites,i have seen pictures of WW2 airplanes flying in at about 650 mph on a vertical dive that plowed into the ground about 40 feet deep, i dont think these WW1 airplanes had enough kinetic force to be buried that deep, of course ground conditions had a lot to do with it,it would be neat to find a engine like this buried somewhere and clean it up at least for some kind of display.
