Taken from Lopukhov's "Writings on Ballet and Music" (page 166-167): "No list of Petipa's greatest ensembles would be complete without the Pas de Diane from Esmeralda. Vaganova removed the part of the Satyr, thereby eliminating the conflict between Endymion and the Satyr that is the culmination of the whole ensemble; as a result the work lost its narrative and choreographic harmony. I remember Petipa's Saytr well, as danced first by Georgy Kiaksht and later by Leonid Leontiev. The Satyr's leg jerked as if to kick away Endymion (originally Vaslav Nijinsky) who leapt over him in a soubresaut, while Diana (Anna Pavlova) took flight in jets. Together the three enacted an unforgettable choreographic masterpiece. Alas Petipa's masterpiece was distorted by Vaganova, who failed to realise that the whole of Petipa's Pas de Diane was brilliantly infused with the conflict between these characters." After reading Lopukhov's text I would be interested to know when these three characters came together in the piece. Maybe the coda would have included the choreographic description Lopukhov mentions.
The Pas De Diane has a very interisting Story . The music is harmonious, the choregraphy of course IS wonderful...I dont know why Endymion was remplaced by Acteon because Acteon hated Diana. That's so stupid. I don't hate the pas de deux of today but I Hope see more the original ballet and also more Lost ballets like Le roi Candaule, Le talisman, The little humpbacked horse....
