I don't agree. Melville didn't understand the genre yet, and Delon's presentation as conceived by Melville was laughably absurd. Later, Melville had a fine collaborator for his stories and they improved treendously. Other than problems with Delon's farcical "assassin", the rest of the movie demonstrated Melville's great movie-making talent.
Talk about disturbing, l just watched this an hour ago on an old VHS tape and now this scene pops up on my phone. Guess what they say is true, Big Brother IS watching you.
Completely unrelated but I had a similar experience, I'd pirated this movie and watched it on a dvd a few years ago. Right after finishing the movie I hop onto youtube, click on a random video, scroll down to the comment section and the top commenter's profile picture is Jef Costello. It was an "oh wow" kind of moment.
@randywhite3947 Probably because of the overdramatic death. It's a common thing in these old films. Like the first and second Godfather movies, they somehow just can't make the death scenes feel right despite it's an excellent film series overall.
One of greatest French movie ever made everything was perfect specially the acting is my alain delon favorite movie of all time the only of that generation of great actors that is still alive just turn 88 years happy birthday to a great French actor
Love the way he grasps his chests when shot, especially with those white gloves. His revolver laid across, almost like a sword. Very theatric, in a good way.
Few films have captured Delon's aloneness and charisma as well as this Melville masterpiece - Delon was the perfect actor/man for the role.
@@cbruno_17 Actually the other way around. Jef Costello hummed to one of the tracks from the album as Alain Delon was said to be a huge fan of the band.
But why Jeff Costello went inside that club and threatened that girl with an empty gun and then said he was paid to kill her and then got shot dead by police so what was the meaning of that last scene of the film.
I saw this movie in a theater a couple weeks ago. Found this ending scene quite stunning. First, because it seemed he was about to kill the lady musician. Then when he is himself shot I was stunned by the fact that this samorai had no bullets in his gun. Why would he confront her with an unloaded gun?
It’s Cathy Rosier. She had a hard story... her husband a rich CEO of the Pernod Brand (Havana, Ricard, 51, ...) died 2 weeks after their mariage. Then she did more or less nothing. Sad because she was amazing.
*This final scene is completely absurd and inconceivable ... What is the meaning of raising an empty Colt PPositive in the middle of the Club against the singer .... Asking for suicide ??? if so how did he know that it will be delivered at the end where as there was no reason for him to die ??? I watched this movie over 10 times still couldn't find any sense unless deployed as a novel ending from Melville which this kind of cul de sac movies usually have* Good movie but ending doesnt make any sense ~ @ny ideas pls ??????????????????????????????????*
Yes, the ending doe not make any sense. He can sacrifice himself but turning up with an empty revolver and pointing it to the pianist does not make much sense. Maybe turning up at the police station with the empty revolver and pointing it at the captain makes more sense.
@@karthikmohan1539 'It’s absurd to copy life in an attempt to produce an exact recreation of it, I move from realism to fantasy without the spectator ever noticing…' - Melville. Although a better translation would be 'fantastique' meaning stunning, incredible, weird etc
probably the best scene for such an egregiously dull and overrated film, if only the entire film were like it's conclusion, this actually has some depth and mythos, everything else was so dry and boring.
