The 61st Royal Variety Performance Filmed from the Victoria Palace Theatre on 19th November 1991 by LWT. Many, many stars in the cast including Diana Ross, Elaine Paige, Wayne Sleep and Les Dawson. (Full cast at playlist above)
This show was attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and was in aid of the EABF (Entertainment Artists Benevolent Fund).
The complete half hour Musical medley features scenes from "My Fair Lady" , Roy Hudd in "Oliver", Lea Salonga and Simon Bowman singing "Last Night of the World" from "Miss Saigon", Elaine Paige singing "Memories" whilst Aeva May and Rosemary Ford sing "Macavity" from "Cats", Michael Ball and Claire Moore "All I Ask of You" from "Phantom of the Opera", Patti Lupone with "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserables"and "One more day" also from "Les Mis" with Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball, Frances Ruffell, Barry James, Sue Jane Tanner and just about everyone in it!
This medley was put together for the end of the show as a tribute to Mr. Producer; the incredibly talented Cameron Mackintosh.

No two people will ever play these roles of Kim and Chris in this Production of Miss Saigon like Lea and Bowman. The perfect matchup. Have heard all the other actors who have played these roles but none compare to these two. They played their parts so brilliantly with such raw passion. They were so young then. Their voices were beautiful together. And listening to them singing 25 years later with the same passion takes your breath away, you actually get transported back in time to what it must have been like in Saigon during the war. Two Amazing Actors and Singers.

Yes, very private times. Simply wonderful! I have never seen this before. I've just watched the latest reunion of them singing 'Sun and the Moon' and 'The last night of the world' 30 years after this. Quite amazing that a music buff like me didn't see or hear, anything of Miss Saigon. I will seek the full show now. 5.2020. Very special. Thank you Autoplay...Once again.

The original is always the BEST! Lea and Simon's chemistry is unequaled; they're a perfect pair whose singing & acting evoke sincere feelings of love and tenderness. I can listen to them again and again when their interpretation of the songs was in 1989 and during Lea's 40th anniversary. I hope they can record all of the songs they sang in Miss Saigon, just the two of them as duet.

@@hillmiss1736 I just watched Lea with Will Chase on RU-vid singing the same song. Will is good, but his vocal range isn’t as good as Simon’s. He struggles with some of the higher notes, and it’s noticeable in this song. Maybe he was having a bad night

@@t1328 Will does not struggle at all with the notes. If anything, he has a better-sounding voice. Simon has a nasal approach to his singing, especially when it gets higher, whereas, Will simply blasts them out very easily. Watch more of his work, be it Rent or Miss Saigon, vocals is never a problem with him - nor his acting, which is miles better than Simon's.

The best Kim and Chris ever. Great chemistry. Love, passion, tenderness emanate from both of them. Kudos to the director and Simon for guiding Lea . She did give them credit during the interview . Kudos to her extraordinary talent at that young age.

March 2020. Lea Salonga's voice, diction and acting is beyond perfect, crystal clear, magical and excellent and the same for Simon Bowman and you can't help to fall in love with him. And the strong chemistry, connection, respect and comfortability between them makes it perfect. In conclusion, ORIGINAL KIM & CHRIS which is Lea & Simon is still more perfect, awesome and incredible other than Kims and Chris out there! ♥️

Interesting that this was taped in November 1991. Lea and Simon opened the West End production in 1989. Lea opened the Broadway show in 1991 and won the Tony Award, so she must have taken a brief leave from Broadway to go to London and take part in this performance. I wonder if Simon Bowman was still in the West End production as well or if they brought him back.

Miss Saigon is powerful and dramatic and gives the Puccini opera a gritty realism utterly spellbinding. It requires supremely powerful performances by great actors/singers and has been a deserved world wide success. But the music just does not measure up to the authors’ previous Les Misérables-a masterpiece.
