Of course the other side of the voicespectrum; Geoff Castelucci, Ain't no sunshine. He is using something new with his voice. He goes to a specific note that I feel the floor shivering. And the volume is only on 20%. A voice which is filled with soul.
Yes, I remember she told a story about how she got a classical training. She's a coach on The Voice Teens Philippines. And someone auditioned with a classical song. So, she told her story to make the audience realize the importance of classical technique. "Classical technique saved my life, in the most literal sense. I was in Miss Saigon, [...] but my voice is starting to fail. It was fading little by little, but I don't know for what reason, because never in my life did I lost my voice. 'Why does it seem like my body is rebelling against me?' So, the very kind producer of the show, used his own money, just for me to have the best voice teacher. The first thing she said 'I will teach you, classical technique, because that is what's going to save you. You will sing to survive. You will be able to make it to the next show.' And it's 8 shows a week. So, thank goodness, they reduced mine to 5 shows. But five Miss Saigon for a week is not easy." - Lea Salonga
I fulfilled a bucket list item by seeing Lea in concert in the Los Angeles area. My favorite song by her is Someone to Watch over Me. I waiting patiently, but she never did it.... UNTIL THE LAST SONG. What a thrill.
Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga, OL, born February 22, 1971) is a Filipina singer and actress, best known for her roles in musical theatre, for supplying the singing voices of two Disney Princesses (Jasmine and Mulan), and as a recording artist and television performer. At age 18, she originated the lead role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon in the West End and then reprised the role on Broadway,[3] winning the Olivier and Theatre World Awards, and becoming the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award.[4] Salonga is the first Filipino artist to sign with an international record label (Atlantic Records in 1993). Salonga was the first actress of Asian descent to play the roles of Éponine and Fantine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway.[5][6] She also portrayed Éponine and Fantine, respectively, in the musical's 10th and 25th anniversary concerts in London. She provided the singing voices of two official Disney Princesses: Jasmine in Aladdin (1992) and Fa Mulan in Mulan (1998). She was named a Disney Legend in 2011 for her work with The Walt Disney Company.[7] Salonga starred as Mei-li in the 2002 Broadway version of Flower Drum Song. She has played numerous other stage, film and TV roles in the US, the Philippines and elsewhere. She has toured widely in the theatre roles and as a concert artist. From 2015 to 2016, she returned to Broadway in Allegiance, and from 2017 to 2019 she appeared in the Broadway revival of Once on This Island.
She is gifted. I'm a vocal teacher too. There are imperfections in the classical/operatic singing. Let the natural talent evolve too though we teach what we are suppose to teach...
I really don't know what you were expecting from Lea as she sang this song. She sang as if she was performing it in the musical the expression as she sang feeling the emotions was a pure joy to watch and isten to not just a soulless rendition.
Maggie Renee, thank you for your reaction to Lea Salonga and the song I Don't Cry for Me Argentina. Lea Salonga's voice was pure as sweet honey. You could feel the song coming up from her soul and forming a picture of the story she was telling. This was really a masterpiece coming out of her great voice.
I think this performance is colored by the way Madonna sang it for the movie. Madonna sang it almost triumphal and big. This is more subtle and confrontational. Leah is more daring someone to judge her and doesn't care if she's adored.
I dont have any know how about opera but listening her sing this it gives me goosebumps because somehow i understand what every lyric means..she is one of the best
For years I heard the lyrics as: "Don't cry for me, Argentina the truth is that I have never loved you" And I thought to myself, man, what a badass woman! telling the truth just like that.
She’s definitely impressive. That enunciation! Always enjoy a Maggie reaction (even a Santa Fe one 🤣). Gonna try to make it tomorrow. No promises. But I will try my best. 🥲🥲
Thank you for your lovely comment. So glad you are my Patron. Can't wait to see you on my Reactions Live Stream later today and if you are working - I will miss you and DON'T work to hard! You are the BOSS remember? LOL!!
I hope you react to more Lea Salonga performances. Her vocal performance and acting is so fantastic. I don't think Lea has ever sung anything purely classical. Someone else commented that there is an audio of Lea singing "Pie Jesu" (by Andrew Lloyd Webber). I'm a big an of Lea Salonga's duet with Josh Groban on "The Prayer" from 2019. It's from Josh's concert in Manila. Lea had recently broken her leg, which is why she appears in a wheelchair. They also duet on the song "All I Ask of You" from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which sounds wonderful, too, but I'm just partial to "The Prayer."
Oh man she's amazing. Check out her version of on my own from the 10th anniversary performance of les miserables and her version of I dreamed a dream from the 25th anniversary performance of les miserables. She's the only actor who played two different characters fifteen years apart. She's so freaking talented. She's up there in the most underrated Broadway stars for me (with eden Espinosa).
Hello. Lea had classical training in her younger years. Please check out her recording of Pie Jesu. Unfortunately it's only audio, no video. But she sang it in operatic voice.
Oh my gosh! I love your reaction. Please make a reaction video of Ms. Lea Salonga and Il Divo's concert tour. Their performances WILL BRING TO HEAVEN!! It's a MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN, and the most PERFECT COLLABORATION EVERRR. I highly recommend you watch "The Music of the Night" first.
Wow! Lea Salonga! Thanks for this introduction Maggie! What a lovely bright timbre and super well controlled performance - with all of the well balanced nuances perfectly delivered. She MUST have a solid classical voice background? Her vibrato also is really pleasant and smooth and her emotional intensity is just right - not overblown. Loved this!

Before becoming familiar with her musical theatre repertoire, I only knew her as the singing voice of Mulan. And also, apparently, the singing voice of Jasmine in Disney's Aladdin, too. Such an underrated talent! Also, I don't know how old she was in this video, but she's 51 years old now, which is just ... Wow. So that would be the maturity you're hearing in her voice.
@@rubyzerda2893her/his underrated definition is lea is the FIRST ASIAN WOMAN to win the TONY AWARD... Was the voice of Disneys Jasmine and Mulan, played Kim in Miss Saigon at West End and Broadway, First Filipino to sign with an International Label (Atlantic Records), been an actress and host on over 2 dozen movies and tv, holds the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD of most advance sales in a musical... Too many awards to mention, had concerts all over the world the list is too long.. if that is underrated then you have been living under a rock...
There is no way she doesn't have classical training of some kind with her emphasis on enunciation. I love listening to her sing, because she's always able to be understood.
Lea has been performing on musical stage in the Philippines since she was a child. Her training started very young and she is also very disciplined as reflected on how she performs. Talent and hard work.
I loved the drama of Julie Covington version from the seventies. This lady has a beautiful voice. My appreciation was enhanced by your information, great reaction as usual. I would love to hear you sing For Emily Wherever I Might Find Her (Simon and Garfunkel).
She is the original singing voice of Disney characters Mulan and Jasmine. She also was part of the les mis dreamcast as Eponine on its 10th anniversary. She is considered the definitive Eponine. In the 25th anniv of the same show, she played Fantine. She's still actively singing now at 51. Because of her healthy singing technic, her voice still sounds incredible.
Watch Lea perform “A Little bit of Rain” with Micheal Bell. That was the first time I really heard her voice. There is so much emotion in the song by Lea. I would love your take on it. It was so touching with just words, made me want to tear up every time.
If you want to hear her sing something is a classical ish way, I’d definitely say listen to her westside story covers. I like in RU-vid there is a One hand one heart and a Tonight cover
What a beautiful performance by Lea Salonga! She is truly one of the best singers in musical theatre. Maggie, you have a beautiful voice too! I wish you success in your musical career! Thank you for sharing your reaction.
If you hear her sing in her head bice try reacting to her rendition of "My Lord and Master" from the King and I. Its one of my faves by her and I think that she actually had classical training when she did Miss Saigon.
I really and seriously think that you would enjoy this artist MAXWELL and the song is call "This Woman's Work"... It's beautifully done you will be amazed and there is a live version pick that one trust me whole heartedly
I mean I'm no voice expert of any sort but just like Top Gun Maverick:s words, " not the plane,it's the pilot". How do you gauge Lea? She's tne Disney G.O.A.T.
not a singer, if I tried to sing at all birds and warblers will leave this entire country in protest...but I love music, and for some reason got emotional listening to this lady, and you kind of put a finger on why in your reaction. thank you.
minor way late bit - Lea's Brother is the conductor...this is on a DVD / Concert of broadway tunes - still avail , I can't read the detail info ( date /place ) mostly oriental printing.
As good as that cover is Julie Covingtons version will always be my own personal favourite but damn she can sing & not heard of her before but that song always makes me cry damn them tears ! Peace
Knowing nothing of her before this I would think she was in a Andrew Lloyd Webber musical or one of the Disney animated features. That is one clear and understandable singer.
A nice version of this song, First time hearing her. Check out Allie Sherlock covering Skyfall. Sorry Adelle fans but this is my favourite version of it
