Lea (pronounced LAY-ah) is from the Philippines, born 1971. She began performing at age 7 as a kid in a production of THE KING AND I. She has had a long, varied career: theater, film, TV, albums, and concerts. She became internationally known when she originated the leading role of Kim in MISS SAIGON on London at age 18. (The creators of the show had done a worldwide search for their leading lady and finally found Lea at age 17 and a lot of other original cast members in the Philippines.) She did the role in London and then on Broadway and won all the major awards for her performances: Olivier, Tony (first Asian actress to win), Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World Awards. Lea was the first Asian to play Eponine in LES MISERABLES on Broadway (she went into the show in 1993) and was asked to play Eponine in the LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary Dream Cast concert in 1995 (the video you reacted to). Lea went into the LES MISERABLES Broadway revival as Fantine in 2007 and was part of the LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary Concert as Fantine in 2010. I think Lea was one of the only performers to be in both anniversary concerts and playing different roles. Lea is the singing voice for Jasmine from "Aladdin" ("A Whole New World") and Mulan ("Reflection") - I think the only woman to voice two Disney princesses. Regine Velasquez is called "Asia's Songbird" and considered Queen of the Belters in the Philippines. She is 10 months older than Lea (birthday April 1970) and has been working since the mid-80s. Most Filipino singers of the last 20-30 years consider Regine an inspiration (a la Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey - and Regine has sung the hits by all those women). Regine did an online birthday concert fundraising for a favorite charity of hers and asked Lea to duet with her, though they each recorded their parts separately in advance.

I saw Les Mis on Broadway about 4 times in the 1990s, and must’ve seen her each time. I didn’t know her name back then, but she was amazing. I can’t believe she’s 50 now.

I wore out the double CD set from the 10th anniversary concert. She is also the singing voice of Princess Jasmine and Mulan! Also in this same concert, Judy Kuhn is Cosette, and she is the singing voice of Pocahontas!

She is my favorite female singer. She does the best performance of this number hands down. it's a singing lesson by one of the best. She was the first Filipina artist to perform this in the show (Les Mis). She did Reflection in Mulan and is the Princess in the original "Aladdin". I believe she is the only double Disney Princess. She was also the first Filipina artist to win a Tony for "Miss Saigon". Listen to a song called "Two Words" she sang to her husband at her wedding. She is one of the best female singers I’ve ever heard and that includes legends like Elaine Paige and Keala Settle. Lea definitely has her diction like a machine gun accuracy and can do it at a mouse whisper or a full belt and still get it absolutely perfect !! A true Masterclass and one to always go and see whenever you can as live just takes it up a few levels !!! I first saw her on her debut in Miss Saigon playing Kim in London, her West End debut as well as the debut for the show too so tons of pressure all round and she hit it out the park !! She might have only been about 18-19 at the time but she is was fearless and powered her way through every emotion you could think of and by the time they hit my fave song The Last Night Of The World …. I was in tears !!! She had broken most of us by that point and her story was ours and she was pulling us along and willing for a positive ending for her and her son …. AMAZING !!! You are correct: she was the voice behind Disney's Mulan and Princess Jasmine in the movie Aladdin. She is a recipient of two awards for being the star of the Broadway show "Miss Saigon": the Tony Award for Best Actress and the Lawrence Olivier Award. She is an international star.
