“…..to prove as an Asian woman, I can play whatever part I want to play, and do it well, and have people in the audience forget where I’m from or who I am and my background, and just take me purely on merit on what I can do…” very well said Miss Lea....On my own changed your life, your words will change my destiny...
Listening to her talk she is a total intellectual. If she were not a singer she would be a Doctor, scientist or professor. I know she was going toward medical school.
I guess I'm one of the few lucky ones to have been touched by her magic face to face. Having worked at Y&R Advertising in Manila, I was privileged enough to have done a string of TV commercials with her at the height of her Broadway career. We were all gushing, embarrassingly I must admit, telling her how proud we were of her being the first Filipino global star of stage and film. Lea also has another quirk I'd like to share - she has a photographic memory. We would be handing her a script for a 30-seconder TV commercial, wall-to-wall copy having been co-written by a client, and she would take just one look at it, scanning all the while from top to bottom of page, hand it back to us, and then its take one. That's it! The director would yell cut and say, that's good, mark it!
Well, she was a child prodigy so what you revealed is not a surprise at all. Simon Bowman said so himself. And that is why Lea had a very wide English vocabulary even as a child. She can mimic accents too.
this was really so inspirational to me; I am pursuing a career on broadway and I've ALWAYS wanted to play Eponine and I was told don't bother because I'm black but just like she wouldn't let her race speak for her, nether will I
Sister all of us is made from blood and flesh .we are all equal in the eyes of god all beautiful and unique.continue your dreams and inspires others .god bless
They commend her consistency and pitch accuracy. After listening to countless performances of hers, I've yet to hear her make a mistake. Every note is on. Every lyric. Every syllable is crystal clear. It's humanly impossible to be a perfect singer, but she comes as close as anyone.
*My mother's first celebrity to see/met in person* (ofc here in the PH) *was Ms. Lea when she was still in her teens and starting theatre act/s.* *How lucky is she!!!* 😩
Yes, the consistency but I say, her versatility is insane. She can act while singing, she can sing any genre using her own renditions but not only that, everything she sings is as clear as a crystal not to mention her stage presence.
Her diction is just perfect to listen to as we are privileged to hear every word and therefore the context of the lyrics. And that is quite rare even with the most well known and quite famous performers
From the first time I opened my Miss Saigon CD to the divine privilege of seeing her perform the role live on Broadway I have been in love with her voice! So crystal clear...incredible pitch and how she annunciates every word. She is simply the best!!
We can not alter our destiny....Her's evolved...As it does. Brilliant!! Thank you for posting these 4 parts.Wonderful! So is she. xx 8.2020. Love and best wishes from New Zealand.
Watched her live here in Las Vegas at the UNLV theatre. Sold out to 90% Filipinos and she was amazing. Her interaction with the audience between songs were so humble and down to earth and at time so Filipino. Thanks Almighty Father for sending us one of your most blessed angels to spread joy and love through her voice and her music and her love for her fellow man.
Lea Salonga is really my idol. She sings naturally with her heart.. How I wish I could see her in personal someday.. I'm also a Filipino like her, and wanted to be a singer she's my inspiration :)
It's like Filipino mentality, in general, that once you speak English especially out of town or city you're already "mayabang" or whatsoever! I often heard it from my kabarrios " nakarating lang ng Maynila pa‐Ingles² pa, sarap kudkurin ng asin!" Those were un‐educated people or if they did, not even finished grade school & so sorry for them! Instead of discouraging anyone or give negative comments, we have to appreciate people who are intelligent enough & had given various extraordinary talent uplifting not just the people but the country most that we must be proud of, salute to Lea Salonga that never been too late on my 70's to know her & thanks to RU-vid!
Some people are not open to diversity & are very quick to judge & label you by your race and/or skin color. But Lea, as an oriental lady who proved it that whatever or whoever you are, you can achieve anything if you put your heart to your dream without forgetting where you came from & never changing who you are gets you anywhere. Lea, you're an inspiration....
+puttra sonothong Excuse me?!? 1. Go back to your parents to teach you some values if they got values to teach YOU. 2. But then again, no amount of money could buy you values, you'll still be a putrid human being devoid of any good values to humanity, a vermin, that is if you even have any brain to understand anything I'm saying, imbecile earthling....
Being a few years older than Ms. Lea, I had really witnessed her as a very young talented cute little girl until now. How far has she gone - became a source of pride not only for the Filipinos but also for all the Asians. The quality of her voice is at a different level. Her countenance is enhanced by her immeasurable wit and versatility in expressing herself through songs and in conversing - wow her command of the English language and fluency in delivering it with her angelique voice is really amazing. I am so sorry for some of our fellow Pinoys who misinterpreted it as being proud when she uses English in our home country during interviews with media people. They never knew that it was one of the components why she was able to conquer the world of music and uplifted the Pinoys in the eyes of those races who feel they are the superior races in the world. Thank you, Lea and I thanked God for creating you as a Pinay!
I'm teary eyed.on the song "On My Own".Truly on your own you made yourself great. You maintain your classiness and good heart through the years. No wonder up until now people around the world are amaze not only by your talent but you as a person. You have proven yourself as Asian that you can conquer the world on your own.God bless you more Lea Salonga. With love from the Philippines:)
she's so amazing, thank you for sharing all four parts of this documentary - i love her so so so so much, and to hear about her journey is just motivational.
Emotion just keeps on swelling, it envelopes your soul to weep on how grateful we were for such talent existing to serve as an inspiration to many. Just fantastically beautiful talent :)
I adore this woman. She is beautiful talented and amazing performer. I have never seen her as an asian woman. For me is only a very very talented woman.
I love her. She's one of my inspirations to be the best I can be in what I can and love to do. And she's honesty one of a kind. I hope to fulfill my goals and dreams and even more someday, just as she did. :)
Thank you for posting! Lea sans make-up looks exactly the same when she was auditioning for Les Mis way back. Conscious decision to wear similar white baggy shirt during her segment with Boublil-Schonberg? Gorgeous!
to prove as an Asian woman, I can play whatever part I want to play, and just take me purely on merit on what I can do. Well Lea you have certainly proved that, and proved it extremely well. All future Filipino singers are compared to you. You have set the bar so high with your talent, dedication, and manner.
