@GreatChicken2
@GreatChicken2 11 месяцев назад
Maomao is 17 at the start of this show, meaning she *should* be able to start her career as a courtesan and old woman there knows it. The MC knows she won't be good at it (she'll only get the wierdos who have a certain kink), and its not in line with her interests, in other words, Do Not Want. Also, the mid-late Ming Dynasty spawned a lot of B-grade political intrigue dramas from Hong Kong in the past. It gave us fictional heroes like Justice Bao who is a chief judge that's supposed to be very corruption resistant, even towards people who should have authority over him. B-grade Ming has an endemic corruption problem - not enough policing or the authorities can easily be paid off. I do not have reliable data on how bad the problem is in real historical Ming Dynasty (since it lasted ~300 years); if it is that corrupt tho, it won't bet the first time a dynasty in China has declined or ended due to corruption. Maomao's kidnappers are likely to have posed as her parents and have bribed the palace officials/guards to look the other weay. Selling people on the streets to conscripted servitude isn't legal, BUT an exception is allowed if *your child* is the one being offered to serve, for a regular comp to help supplement a farmer's meagre earnings. There were definitely scammers who make a living selling others' children into effective conscription and then pocketing the government compensation, with nobody batting an eyelid since overall the country wins, even to the detriment of parents looking for their missing children..

@TianVtCH
@TianVtCH 10 месяцев назад
Justice Bao wasn't from the Ming Dynasty. He was from the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The Song Dynasty is a controversial dynasty because the social economic situation of the Song Dynasty was probably the greatest and most advanced China had ever been, however the Song Dynasty was one of the weakest when it comes to it's military, seeing a slow decline and ceding of territory to the foreign Northern Jin Dynasty, before eventually being conquered by the Mongolians who established the Yuan Dynasty. The Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644) was exceptionally popular for all sorts of period drama because it was the last Han Chinese dynasty, and generally considered the last golden age of the Chinese civilization before the modern period. It is during the Ming Dynasty that a lot of China's most famous landmarks really took it's most recognizable form. The Great Wall of China, as commonly imagined, was really the work of the Ming Dynasty, which upgraded large stretches of the ancient wall with stone turrets, wall, bastions and gates from the original packed earth ramparts. The Forbidden City in Beijing was also built by the Ming Dynasty, as well as Admiral Zheng He's famous Treasure Fleet and the mighty Treasure Ships.

@@solaroid4442 But it wasn't common in Europe. Christianity demanded loyalty "until death do us part". Divorce was extremely uncommon. If a monarch married several times, it's because of wife's death, not because he divorced her to try having kids with another woman. He may have had some side chicks, but bastards were allowed to inherit titles only under exceptional circumstances. So many royal dynasties in Europe were snuffed out because of this. Holy Roman Empire changed 3 dynasties in 3 centuries because they all died out.

Seems like they used it's flowering as a subtle indication of the passage of time.. A brief flash of the flower between scenes to show that it has been a while, similar to leaves changing color or snow falling to show seasonal time passage. The show is very beautiful, both in the artwork of its characters and backgrounds, as well as the directing and cinematography. I love when an anime goes all out like this!

6:22 Well, she's 17, two years above the age at which that particular brothel begins to employ people as courtesans (which isn't exclusively sex work -- some courtesans may go years upon years without bedding anyone, even when they have regular customers). Of course, you could definitely still consider 17 to be too young.

9:00 Not exactly, there was no sharing of women between princes and the emperor, that Harem is the Harem of the Emperor alone, obviously Princes could have their own wives or harem, but there was no sharing as that would easily lead to the awkward situation of no one knowing who's the father of the babies born there. Also the background and the preference of the emperor would dictate the rank of the women there and the Emperor would visit more often those of higher rank. Usually the woman with the higher rank would be the mother of the crown prince, she would be the Empress, a very important title because the Empress would become regent if the Emperor died before the Crown Prince had the age to rule alone becoming a Mother Empress, some Mother Empresses became so powerfull that they dominated their sons completely through their reigns either by pulling the strings behind the scenes or by continuing to be the regent through the adulthood of their sons. Other women with lesses ranks would receive other titles like Consort, Princess, Lady, Imperial Wife, and so on... each Dinasty had its own set of titles and ranks.
@xyreniaofcthrayn1195
@xyreniaofcthrayn1195 11 месяцев назад
The empress titles are empress, empress consort, empress regent, empress dowager in some instances grand empress dowager. I think if i remember correctly. It's been a while since the court intrigue/ maid or foreign princess becomes concubine and goes through the ranks while dodging left right and center internal and external plots in an imperial court that was good or even half as good as romance of the 3 kingdoms.

Mercury in makeup could also be a thing - cinnabar is a common alchemic ingredient (the representative Yang alloy) and it's used anywhere from blush to seal/stamp ink. But since we are talking about white here it's lead. Of course, it could also be ingested in pill form in external alchemic elixirs, which are usually fired in a high heat crucifix with lead, herbs, and other interesting ingredients such as virgin's urine. See "Red Pill Case" of 1620, Ming China.

Concerning Japanese series called "Jin", is originally a manga which has been adapted into a live action series with massive popularity. It's been one of the go-to sources for Narou-kei or webnovel authors who writing anything concerning medicine and the medical field to use due to how well Jin managed to pulls off conducting modern medicine in a less developed time period. Hoops the MC had to go through to achieve the precision and sanitation required for his procedures to succeed is quite masterful so I can see why this series may inspire alot of other authors.

I find it interesting that Arsenic also shares a lot of the same symptoms and was also popular in personal hygiene products like soap and even was used for murder in some cases in the 18th century it seems due to how little was needed as well as how fast acting it was (though 30 min for a pea size amount of powder would be rather slow by today's poison standards)
@lily-_-

being slow acting can be a boon depending on the situation as a poison tester wouldn't die from it immediately, so the food would be declared safe and eaten by the target before the poison tester shows any symptoms.

The white pigment used to be lead oxide (PbO) or "White lead," obtained from Galena. It was the whitest pigment and was commonly used in makeup. Zinc white was also used, but it's not as white as lead. In Japan, the heavy makeup worn by geishas caused many issues, such as skin diseases, which in turn required more makeup to cover. On the other hand, white lead powder would be easier to accidentally ingest so the babies would be more prone to poisoning. Today, the whitest pigment is made of titanium dioxide.

6:30 Maomao doesn't have a skin infection, she just has a bad habit of testing various poisons and drugs on herself. Her arm is one big patch test. As for why she looks much prettier in the credits - she deliberately dresses down and tries to make herself look unattractive (and the freckles are fake for the same reason). She lives in the red light district and wants to avoid attracting attention from "customers" unable to afford the services of the brothels (or rejected by same as being violent or unmannered). Her "grandfather" is, incidentally, actually her uncle. Long story behind that, but he did raise her. Also - Mercury is liquid (at room temperature) but this isn't true of all mercury compounds. In particular mercury oxide is crystalline. However as I recall in this story the culprit is lead. It's still used today when unethical manufacturers are cutting corners. Google "lead in cosmetics" for that particular horror story. As for how the baby wound up ingesting it - breast feeding, plus contact & contamination.

Yes, lead was in a lot of cosmetics during the Victorian era in the West. It makes your skin white (indoor pallor, you don't work outside). And makes you sickly and pale, and faint a lot, which was supposed to be...desireable. eek!

The palace has a lot of physicians. The issue is that in order to be a physician in the rear palace, they'd have to get the snip snip. XD Also, female physicians weren't a thing in ancient China.

Alcohol FYI: Most countries have a Drinkiung Age of 18. Though the Age of Adulthood & Drinking Age was frequently younger than that during these times. Doubly so with Life Expectancy being a lot lower. Faminine, Plague, and Wars were a lot more common so the Age of Adulthood could be anywhere from 13-16. We take it for granted that it's NORMAL for people to live to be 90-100, but back in these days it was probably a lot less. An even if you didn't die younger due to Age....very possible you would be a LOT more likely to die from Bandits/Raiders, War, or Faminine.

Drug companies are looking to plants (chemistry factories) that if effective then refined and manufacturing. Plants are amazing. Since they can’t run away they produce lots of chemicals as chemical warfare with insects and animals.

So for the History part, harem was equal part for producing heirs and keeping glorified hostages (most women admitted in the harem were nobleborn women who could enter for political moves). In the case of enuchs guarding a harem, everything was removed. As for Mao Mao, it wasn't rare for imporvised family to sell their daughters as servant. They were paid a salary directly sent to the "family". Of course, noone bothered checking if the person bringing the girl was actually family..... @15:30 back then, it was common for women to use face powder to appear paler. Depeding on the region, those powders could be made out of lead or arsenic. Ladies in waiting are closed trusted servants and confidents of a noble woman. Usualy they are lesser nobility themselves. They represent their mistress and her prestige reflects on them.

While she desereves it, MaoMao probobly won't ever end up being the palace physicain. Technically, the fact that she actually was taught medice and herbs is illigal during that time. Since women having a high education is rare, kinda illegal and really only ever considered in a few select noble familes. However, since she saved the concubines and baby's life, and always uses here knowledge for them, their overlooking it and kinda keeping her name out of reports so theres no paper tail and she doesn't get into trouble.

There was an emperor that had 200 wives! Ladies working in the palace can be promoted to wives. Empress consort is the queen. I'm not sure. There lots of titles in the herum. Sometimes the emperor would spoil his favorite wife so much that he neglected his royal duties!

Decades ago doctors thought I had G6PD. I was bit by a brown recluse and had a very bad reaction to the venom so I had a lot of fully necrotized tissue. After they excised that out, they gave me Dapsone I assume to mop up the rest of the venom/ necrosis. Well it seems that drug can have a very bad interaction with brown recluse venom, akin to G6PD- which is why they thought I had it. It gave me hemolytic anemia and I started urinating dead red blood cells en mass and delirium and all that. They gave me a transfusion and it fixed it. Years later to figure out why I was chronically tired I went to a hematologist to I assume pretty much rule out leukemia and the like I told him about the G6PD and he seemed skeptical and he said it wouldn't be hard or expensive to run more one test to see if I had that along with the other tests. He said the tests came back negative.

That's actually old enough to consume alcohol in many parts of the world. In my country you're allowed to consume non-distilled alcoholic beverages (beer and wine) at an age of 16, and products containing distilled alcohol of any kind are allowed at an age of 18. Regardless, back in the days probably nobody cared anyway.

i know i'm a bit late and i know it doesn't apply at all but the drinking age for alcohol practically all around the world where it's actually legal is 18 most of the EU falls under this as does china (japan is at 20 just as an fyi). also just as an fyi the reason why they have only 1 phisician is 3 fold. 1st most ppl wouldn't want to become Eunichs (which is a requirement there) 2nd the pay ain't that much better if you become a phisician in the royal court and 3rd one only guys can be legally called phisicians. they do have an entire "medical" ward but they aren't allowed to create medicine in there which is def a problem.

The Apothecary Diaries Maomao was kidnapped, very annoying on her part. Watch the freckles. I have read the LN’s and reread the first volume, as I and others were curious about the face powder. I thought it was lead too, as I remember from the LN’s. to my dismay, it’s not mentioned in the first volume, but the face powder comes up again later. That must be where it’s explained in later volumes. Most of your other questions are answered elsewhere in the comments.

I am surprised that plants seem to be `somewhat alien' to you. (i swear I'm not trying to sound presumptuous) I'm currently studying in germany to become a pharmacist, and here we have a lot of courses about plants. In the first semester we had a course about plant identification, then one about plant microscopy in the second and in the third semester we had one about identifying dried plants under the microscope. Do you not have similar classes?

It's not that I don't know anything about them. I learned microbiology and molecular and cellular biology in my undergraduate program. But it's not a major part of graduate pharmacy school. They do talk about plants as a drug discovery tool and that certain medicines were discovered from them (digoxin, St. John's Wort, etc) but the source of drugs is not relevant to their effects on the body, which is why it's not stressed as much. As long as I know how to use the drugs and what to be careful of when using them, you can get by without knowing what they're made from. Most drugs nowadays are synthesized in labs anyways. I do know a little bit in reference to poison control for certain plants, but I had to look up rhododendron's effects and such for this and the next few videos. The good thing about my pharmacy program is they definitely made sure we understood what resources to use to look up information, so even though I might not know everything, I sure know where to look for it! This is key to being a pharmacist!

@@DefinitivelyZach Interesting! I agree of course that most drugs are synthesized today, but we still use herbal teas here in pharmacies as diuretics, laxatives, mild sedatives etc. for small stuff. And we make those tea mixes ourselves. though I must confess that I believe that the surprisingly strong emphasis on plants is a historic relic, from a time when teas were more important

Spoilers So, the reason that there are so few phycisians is cause the previous emperor tried to do fraud and the doctors were likely to notice. He didn't want anyone to notice, nor his lady I won't tell you which type, but it's heavily implied in light novel that that is the reason Mao Mao's father is not in the court anymore.
