Excellent video that is also very relatable, I’ve run into both positive and negative experiences while backpacking and hiking over the years and will even admit to being that guy who kinda just goes with the flow but everything you said in this video was right on point, thank you for putting this out there more people need to hear things like this.

A lot of the time, particularly on (paid membership) club organized trips folks don't want to step into a leadership role due to liability. They (the club) adopt a common adventure model, where you may have someone organizing a trip but there are no defined leadership roles to try and midigate liability should something go wrong. It also, then becomes a catch 22. No leadership=no perceived liability but then that lack of leadership makes it more likely that something could go wrong, as you stated. As for our trip as you discussed, we've debriefed extensively since the trip and your feedback and have hopefully cleared up our communication issues going forward.

But isn't there an implied duty to act? for those paid clubs? That seems like a problem to me. On the other thing I had no doubt. I hope I was helpful.

I am not a paddle leader but I lead day hikes and backpack trips with the local chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club; we are all volunteers. As AMC leaders, we have all been trained in leadership skills; much of which you summarized in your video. It is quite the responsibility to take a group into the backcountry, even if the “backcountry” is a short day hike into a state park. I always scout the trip I will lead to determine what hazards we may encounter and, while on the trip, keep an eye on the participants to ensure everyone is OK (thankfully I have not had any issues). Also, even as a participant on a hike (not the leader), I am the one who yells “hydrate!” when we stop for a break!

Brett, this turned out to be a very timely video. I was recently on a paddle trip to Cape Lookout. I was the one who looked over the weather, tide and general conditions to determine what day would be the best day to go. While I’m not an expert, I’m doing my best to learn. There were others in the group that had more knowledge of certain parts and pieces of the trip. It was only my second time paddling there. Several questions were asked prior to launch and desires of the route and what to see. The area was recently dredged so we were all new to these conditions. I felt intimidated to some degree with my lack of knowledge in certain aspects of this trip so I failed to step up and take the lead role. That was wrong on my part. We stayed together for the most part going over but not everyone carrying radios had theirs on which was a mistake. One stepped back paddling to take pictures and got out of sight. Now we were divided. His radio was not on. We didn’t know exactly where he was. I went back to look for him. Then once we did get back together, there was discussion on venturing a further distance. Not everyone was on board as it was getting later in the day. The 4 that did not want to go further decided to start the return trip. He didn’t want to. He elected to go alone. Not a good plan since we came over as a group. It should have been decided what the exact itinerary was going to be prior to starting out. One of us should have taken the roll as lead to keep us together as well as what to do in the event of an emergency. All who had radios should have had them on and on the same frequency. Bottom line is, we should have been on the same trip, in communication and return together.

But you see how much you learned! Im a big fan of the term “no autopsy, no foul.” Was it ideal? No. Will it happen again? Let’s hope not. We learn SO much from days like that. Hopefully it was discussed in a debrief.

Thx for this video. I never understand when people just show up unprepared like it’s a “turnkey” situation. Even if the leader is amazing that’s a lot of burden for a group leader to do everyone’s thinking. I like to geek out before a trip and get maps, weather, know the details of any kayaking gear that I will be loaning etc. I hope that being prepared will make things go smoother when everyone ( including me) may be a little stressed in a challenging situation , especially if there’s bad weather or any other stressors that emerge. I wa in a situation last year when there was varying information on a rarely used trail in the Adirondacks. I planned for a harder hike than was expected based on comments I had dredged up via google which I shared w the group leader in a conversation aside from the whole group.
@AdventureOtaku
@AdventureOtaku 4 месяца назад
and that is great active followership.... but did it turn out to be a harder hike?
@anninwhack1998
@anninwhack1998 4 месяца назад
Yes it did and it was a little awkward and even unpleasant for some in the group who didn’t even bring water etc for what ended up being a tricky 3 hour hike. The info I had shared was not taken seriously. I learned that even guidebooks can be wrong and the group leader was in a conundrum.
@AdventureOtaku
@AdventureOtaku 4 месяца назад
@@anninwhack1998 so as a leader, at the beginning of the hike, it’s a great way to figure out how prepared people are, at the same time, brief them on what “may” come. “Good morning everyone, this may be a really hard hike, or an easy hike, because we have conflicting information. But let’s just check and make sure everyone has the gear they need. And is prepared for hard hike!”

Trying to make this happen for informal group paddles is something I've found exceedingly difficult and generally lacking. So things that people have found that make it easier would be very useful. My current thinking is that a conversation starter could be making sure that everyone in the group is #1 committed to the group and that we're going to paddle together and that the group is more important than any individual desire. If you're a stronger paddler you are committing to paddle easier, if you fall behind you'll either paddle harder, or let the group know you can't hold the pace. I'm thinking that getting agreement for the 'active followship' as a "condition of participation" up front ought to make sure the conversation actually happens. I haven't done much informal group paddling this year, so haven't really tried this out. Back when I was a tech manager I learned (the hard way) that I wanted/had to have "one story". I didn't care what it was, and if I had messed up that was what it was. As soon as I had "one story" from everyone involved (customer, developers, ...) then I figured we could solve the problem. Trying to apply this in the informal paddling situation, without formally taking leadership responsibility, or having any 'positional power' is a challenge. I paddled and camped for 3 days last month with someone who became a friend during a kayaking course. He is an experienced paddler and it was such a joy that we naturally had the conversation at the start of every day, and adjusted things as needed. So I know it is possible!

I will say there isn't enough pre paddle communication as well as post paddle debrief. Groups need to define the day. and then look back on the day, what worked what didn't. Be careful though. You could end up the default leader.

I would say that I am not really on for taking charge or being a leader. There have been many occasions over the where I have taken charge of something to get things done, when it is within my skill set. On Club paddles I happily follow and try to help those that need it. Giving the odd pointer. Things I have learnt from your video’s or from Coaches at my club. On the Leadership Assessment Course I was on as a low skilled volunteer. The lack of information that came from those doing the Assessment was difficult for me, as I live with a highly organised person. My Wife has to be organised and that has rubbed off over the years. On normal Club trips we have the Coach running the trip leading and we have Coach Assistants that keep an eye on every one. Then we have regular breaks for those that are in or on slower craft can catch up and we are always asked if we are ok to proceed. I have had an idea for a trip today that I will put to one of the Coaches to see if it is viable. As I like the idea of a good multi day trip with good distance covered each day.

Such a great topic! I always make a Google doc with important info about the trip for backpacking trips (who is bringing what, what time is sunrise/sunset, how many miles each day, etc) and encourage everyone to screenshot and then also have a conversation about what ifs (what if we have to bail, what if we encounter this scenario, are we going to be hiking together the entire time) and I think that helps groups trips. But it does make me think that we should have more of a defined leader than “well, it’s Tory bc she booked the permits and made the Google doc” 😂
@AdventureOtaku

Another terrific episode Brett. After 21 years in the Army I have an intimate knowledge of the need for the correct application of leadership for the situation or task at hand. Leadership can be heavy when needed - as you mentioned - but properly finessed it can be practically unnoticeable. Maslow taught us that everyone has a basic need to be lead to some degree, but it’s all in the application. Keep it up man !

Great video. I’ve seen a lot of these scenarios from the military to Fortune 500. It’s not easy taking the lead especially when you just want to follow sometimes! A lot of responsibility and pressure, but practice makes perfect. It comes a lot easier when you’ve been put in that position a lot. I also believe it starts with building a relationship or common ground with that group of people making it easier to bark out those orders 😂 🫡
