My husband walked in while I was watching this video and goes "F*ck - are you doing a 100 now? Isn't the 50 enough? I can only carry so many bananas!" And walked out of the room mumbling about "next thing you know, woman is going to want to do that Barkley thing. Need a whole banana tree..." So thanks for helping me freak him out, and a massive congrats on your first 100!!!!

I’m a bigger guy, 6’2 240lbs, and never in a million years thought about running a marathon. I’m also getting older (35) and was a college athlete (football). I naturally run like an old football player. My brother is an infantry officer and showed me these videos, which ultimately encouraged me to train and sign up for my first marathon in October. I’ve put up decent numbers in the weight room and had decent speed at 40 yards, but I am terrible at distance runs. I enjoy the challenge of not being good at something and working to improve. Thanks for the content!

You and david goggins are totally opposite in terms of preparation.I remember he took his first ultramarathon so lightly. Even though he completed it in around 19 hours, after the race his kidney failed and even in his 2 nd ultramarathon which was jungle trail like this one, he had no idea about the nutrition. It would be awesome to see you two together on a podcast or something sharing your experiences.

David Goggin’s mental strength and resilience overcomes all of Nick’s preparation. I respect Nick, but these fancy gadgets to acclimate to altitude and the such aren’t what races like these are about. Goggins doesn’t whoop Nicks ass on times when it comes to running because Goggins is just a better runner than Nick, Goggins feeds off the pain, like he says himself “every foot strike hitting the ground is how I feed myself”. Watching Nick is nice and his business is admirable but when it comes to dominating the mind and being ruthless, Nick isn’t even at a tenths of what Goggins is.

Kristopher, can you address his fake 100 mile ruck video from two years ago. He claimed to do a 100 mile ruck in 30 hours with 50 lbs on his back. The video is missing over 70 miles of footage and he does it on the side of the road while avoiding traffic. Here it is for the record: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-403VR8NQgVQ.html A number of ultrarunners, I myself have completed the C&O canal 100, are questioning the validity of that ruck, as he is moving at a much slower pace from the start then what would enable a 30 hour finish -- not to mention the missing footage and countless breaks. Before you buy his supplement, watch that video.

What most people who have never been around there can't fathom is what that elevation does to you I'm from Houston Texas and been in sea level all my life. I'm a pretty decent long distance runner but last year I went to go hike a 14er in Colorado close to Leadville actually. Even at the very start of the trail at 10k feet I had trouble breathing, once I passed 12k feet I could only walk like 50 yards before I would have to rest The elevation is no joke. I can't imagine ppl RUNNING, let alone 100 miles in it.

Great race! As far as the breathing goes, have you considered that maybe you taxed your respiratory muscles (internal/external costals, diaphragm, etc...) to the point where breathing became intensely labored? I know you’ve done ironmans before, but an ultramarathon of running (and the impact of GRFs on the respiratory muscles) provides a novel stress to those muscles that aid in breathing. Just a thought. Maybe spend time specifically training those muscles in the next ultra-build? Thoughts anyone?
@emilylaudi8151
@emilylaudi8151 3 года назад
This is a good theory! On top of this, i thought what if his midback/ribs joints were getting stiff due to the vest he was wearing and the rotational pattern of the area while running. However due to the drastic change in elevation that he’s not used to, it could have been a physiological response. But, could be a combination of factors that contributed to the difficulty of breathing.
@reeseslobodianuk773
@reeseslobodianuk773 3 года назад
@@emilylaudi8151 agreed! I’ve experienced this in ultras before even while not wearing a vest or being at elevation. Particularly, my first time running further than 10 hours I felt a similar response - my chest was just having a hard time expanding even though I was fed, hydrated, and my muscles felt they still had some left to give. Having weight on top of the chest from a vest would make the in/exploratory muscles have to work even that much harder.
