After many years of shredding leaves for my garden and purchasing shredders, I have found that my lawn mower does the best job. It will also shred some of those pine needles in the process. For storage of extra material, take a look at geobins. Mine are over ten years old with no issues at all. When you don't need them, roll them up and store them. Nice video by the way.

I purchased a similar leaf shredder last year after killing my lawn mower by shredding leaves. While I did not shred 25 bags, my wife does dread my coming home during leaf season with what I might have in my Subaru. I have my favorite neighborhoods I get leaves from. The garden loves it.

I bought this shredder a few months ago and love it. I did exactly what you are doing, putting some on my beds right away and saving a big bin for next spring and summer for when I'm looking for browns to add to my compost heap. I'm also making some leaf mold. I love how light weight it is! My leaves are already mulched through a mulching mower before the shredder so they come out even finer. I'm glad to see you wore eye protection as some sticks or acorns can come flying out. Enjoy!

i recommend wearing both hearing protection and a dust mask as well as the eye protection. I pick the leaves up with the lawnmower, then through the shredder, and the result is the ideal size. For big tough leaves (sycamore) I put them through the shredder twice. Side note: If you dampen them slightly, and put them back into the bags with a little topsoil, they compost REALLY fast.

The leaf shredder that I borrowed worked but the lawn mower is more powerful. I don't have to lift up each bag into a shredder so it's easier to line up the leaves and mulch first. Then put the bag on the mower to pick the leaves up, which get shredded a 2nd time. I collected 350 bags over 3 weeks last fall. I put 4-6" shredded leaves on the garlic and composted the rest. About 2/3 of the leaf mold/compost is now on my 3 raised bed gardens so the nutrients can be released into the soil over the winter with no tilling. FYI: I've read that leaves have more nutrients than manure, which makes sense since trees have pulled nutrients 5 to 30 feet down in the soil while animals eat plants with much shorter roots.

Looks like a nice way to shred straight out of the bag. I’ve been doing the same thing with a cheap mower with a bagger. If I want really small pieces I run over them several times without the bag, then pick them up with it on..helps also to have grass clippings in there for nitrogen. Building soil is so much fun! Never would’ve guessed in my earlier life I would say that. Enjoying your videos..

I own a small lawn care business. I pickup most leaves with mower. I then bring some home and cover my lawn with a 2 to 5 inch layer of leaves. Then I make 3 or four mulch passes over them with my mower. Then I bag what doesn't get mulched. I can turn 2 yards of leaves into 3 small bags

I have ripped out my lawn and replaced all plants with a variety of drip irrigated perennials. Just purchased this mulcher (arrives in 2wks) & am thinking mulching can be done twice for a finer product. Brown pine needles can also be mulched. If needles are brown acid will not be a problem and they will break up more easily. Happy mulching! I can hardly wait.

I use Toro combination blower and shredder Shreds leaves in place finely into a large cloth bag that when full you can take and empty where you want it. Much faster and more consistent than string device. Just requires AC where you suck up leaves - I use a 100’ 14-gauge extension - but very powerful and relatively quiet compared to any gasoline device. Also need to avoid picking up twigs and wood chips, but if you’re careful suction will usually separate leaves from denser materials.

I also use my Toro blower/shredder, but it takes much more time than this one seems to. I shred it 3 times and get really small leaf bits. But am starting to look for a faster/larger machine.

Thank you for the thorough review. Leaves are a real problem living on this mountain in North Carolina and valuable for my garden. Leaf blowers will make easy work of building a leaf pile - a leaf mountain really. The problem has always been mulching them in the woods (in order to be able to transport them) and getting them to my garden. As someone mentioned below, a lawn mower will reduce them at ground level which saves the lifting and bending but still that is not ideal. Also, we need such a tool almost entirely in the fall. Hoping someone has a suggestion. Thanks again, nice video :-)

I've used worx shredders for maybe a decade and have some tips. They're best suited for soft, low mass materials so I use a chipper shredder for everything else. Take out the metal blade attached inside that's meant to cut excess trimmer line. All it seems to do is catch debris. I've found Stihl CF3 .095" trimmer line is the best option that will still (barely) fit through the trimmer head. Sure would be nice if there was a way to attach/dispense a spool of line from the trimmer head instead of the one piece at a time, but oh well. I have a precise length of trimmer line that never gets used in the worx as it's my gauge for cutting the correct length of new line from the spool. I have maybe a 1/8"+ gap, when running, between the ends of a new line and the inside of the hopper. If you're doing it right, the trimmer line will slowly wear shorter vs. snapping off at the base due to overloading it. Particularly when shredding wet materials, you will get much longer life out of the trimmer line if you stop to clean out the stuff stuck to the inside of the hopper when the motor is getting bogged down and unable to come back up to full unrestricted speed. Rushing this tool causes broken trimmer lines which takes time to replace, so go slow to go fast.

Jill: 1. Why did you shred into the bin, then disassemble to shovel into a wheel barrow, shovel out? You could have shredded directly into where you wanted the mulch. 2. What was the reduction ratio supposed to be and how did you know you needed to stop/change the line and how long did it take? 3. Why save mulch when it could be feeding the soil and you can then take the compost + soil to use later? 4. You can find shredded leaves (mulch) in bags on the curb to be taken to the land fill. 5. There are shredders that have metal blades that will do trigs also, don't need changing, and produce a miner mulch, ready immediately.

The best effortless, free, no energy consuming that I know: earthworms. I pick 10-20 worms that I find under containers, or when I dig a hole or after a rain and I bring them to the leaves. In a short period they will start to chomp the material and multiply freely. I never use the lawnmower to shread leaves: it burns fuel and adds to greenhouse effect gases. And lawnmowers are purposed to mow lawn. Not to shread composting leaves.

I tried that one year and it was a complete failure. I later learned it was probably because I had the wrong type of weed eater because I know others that use it with no problem. To answer your question, I'm not sure that it would work with other material than leaves. I didn't try it, but I fear it probably wouldn't.

If you want to make a shredder that will handle the stiffer stems and stalks, including corn stalks and squash vines, keep your eyes open for a cheap used push mower. Drill/ cut a 2" hole in the deck opposite the discharge opening. Cut a piece of 2 inch pvc pipe about 18 inches long and secure it over the hole for a chute. Secure the pvc with 3 angle iron braces and short 1/4 " bolts with lock nuts and flat washer on both sides. It works great, just keep your blades sharp. Good luck. :) as far as using the weed eater for mulching leaves, i did that too, just use the thickest line you can get that fits, i use .105 multi edge(star shaped) in mine and it will decimate a squash, melon, pumpkin and anything else that didn't get picked and preserved.

The expensive shredder only has a simple string and it does not work as well as the metal blade. Looking from the result i can clearly see the unfinished shred leaves. I decided to make my own from my old corded electric lawn mower. Worked excellent with fine shredded leaves that resulted in black compost in 1 month short when mixed with kitchen wasted. I can buy all day day long a used electric lawn mower dirt cheap and modify into an excellent leaves mulcher that is way more superior than the commercial with the string type. I used to have the string type and i hated it. No body shows on Utube how to do it so i might have to it one day - one day!!!!!!!!

I have a small, old, garden plot that is now in full shade. Not so good for growing veggies anymore... 5 years ago I turned that space into a LEAF ONLY compost pile. We have several Live Oak trees that shed their leaves throughout the year, so we always have waaaay too many leaves. Live Oaks have very, very thick leaves, they are small in size, yet super thick & leathery. They aren't even any fun to walk in, and crunch the leaves under your feet, bcuz they just don't crunch that way! However, I know have THE VERY BEST COMPOST Nature provides!! It only takes 4 simple ingredients: ▪︎Leaves ▪︎Shade ▪︎Water & ▪︎Patience That last ingredient is something you're going to need A LOT of too!! Bcuz it DOES take a lot of time. Left alone, those Live Oak leaves in my yard will take up to 4 or 5 years to decompose. Yep. The forest floor takes a looooong time! But, like you, I have mulched those leaves with both the lawn mower, and a leaf blower/vac that does the same thing your leaf mulcher does. Since I cut those leaves up into very tiny pieces, the process of making leaf compost has been CUT IN HALF!!! It now only takes about 2 years to make compost! Which sounds like a long time, I know. But really, I never did any work after dropping those leaf pieces into that spot. Plus, considering how thick my leaves are, and how that has has cut the composting time in HALF, that was time well worth waiting for!!! I don't know how thick your leaves are, but if they are the super thin leaves, and then they were cut into very small pieces, I would expect you to have fully composted leaves in one full year! Which would be AMAZING!! The main reason this process takes longer than a "regular" compost pile is bcuz there is no nitrogen component in the compost pile. This is why I like to throw a handful of worm castings into the mix every once in a while. That source of nitrogen helps it break down a little bit faster. I also use freshly cut up leaves as a ground cover to mulch my plants with. It works great! It does keep the soil cooler, which the garlic really needs here in the South! Leaf compost, which is also called leaf mold, is one of the best types of soil ammendments that can be found anywhere. And you now get to have it for free! (basically...) Just keep your compost site in the shade, and give it plenty of water! You'll be soooo very glad you did! Oh - and if your using city water to keep your mulch piles moist, be sure and get a filter to remove the chlorine, or worse yet, the chloramine from the water. If you don't filter it, each time that water hits the compost pile it will kill the natural microbes in the pile. Those microbes are what break down the leaves into future soil. The compost pile won't "work" without them. And the composting won't work without moisture either. So - clean water only! I look forward to watching your garden, and compost grow! 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚 💚

Some of the leaves at the bottom of my bag were a bit wet from a recent rain, but for the most part they were dry. I don't think it would work with saturated leaves, but a few didn't seem to be a problem.

60 is a good price. They are usually around 100 at either Farm and Fleet or Fleet Farm by me.

Use a lawn mover instead as it is much easier and faster.

Why not show the actual machine in use without the music/voice overs????
@edk6074

It would have been VERY helpful if you didn’t have then music playing while running the machine so people can hear how loud it is. One of the reasons for watching this was to hear how loud it is.

The base comes apart from the top so the entire unit nests together. Probably need about 2.5’ diameter area and only 18” height (I’m estimating).
