Kyper is correct. Marner wasn’t the issue. The entire team couldn’t score and the entire team failed on the PP. I cannot believe fans can’t see the issue was the coach. Did Keefe ever have this team overachieve in the playoffs? Marner played bad, I am not excusing it. But what the heck did Keefe do to address anything? He played Brodie non stop and did nothing to fix his play either. What adjustments did he make to get the players playing better? When the coach fails to get the best out of the roster every playoffs it’s his fault. Leafs got to conference finals when they had actual coaching and the team played above their normal play. This is the real problem not Marner. He played great when Babcock was here. Fans are scapegoating the wrong person. The Leafs were outplayed by every single team that Keefe coached against. Tampa series needed 3 OT wins and I didn’t think they deserved to win that series either. When the entire team underachieves every year and loses every game 7 you make a freaking coaching change. That or trade the entire team. But we know this is a good team based on the regular season. And when did they ever play better than the regular season in the playoffs? Never. Their best hockey was way better than in April. Every year. That’s not on Marner. That’s on the coach. Marner will be fine. You trade him if you see he doesn’t work with a real coach who knows how to manage players. Trading away a top 10 talent makes no sense if a coach can get him to do the right things in the playoffs. Keefe never held players accountable for bad play and he was the problem Marner was ineffective. The whole team couldn’t generate offense and people think the issue was Marner? It’s the freaking coach who is responsible for responding to defensive strategy. PP made zero adjustments. And it wasn’t just the PP.
@@disinformationworld9378 You're aware Guy Boucher runs the PP, right? Are you saying Keefe tells them to make STUPID no look passes, high risk sauces through 3 defenders, move the puck slowly and look for a perfect play/only for Auston to be set up?! That is on the players - I've seen Keefe SCREAMING to move the puck, they don't. If you as a player need your coach to bring the best out of you, to get you up to play in a playoff game, make you start on time, teach you how - as an 11 million dollar player - to score on the powerplay, to look over your shoulder for an opponent, to hustle on the backcheck, not to make stupid line changes... You're DEEPLY flawed as a player and need to go. Marner isn't the *only* issue, but at the end of the day, the players aren't performing when it matters and changes NEED to happen. Both players and coaches.
Yes he sounded really tone deaf. His discussion belonged in the past. This is 2024. Leafs streak of strikeouts is astonishing. Even compared to all major professional leagues.
Kyper sounds absolutely clueless here. I stopped listening when he said "I was always a winger" yeah your 4 points and 30 playoff games knows it all. Brutal take for a guy I usually don't mind
Marner's contract is a problem but by no means even close to being THE problem for Toronto. I don't think trading him really gets Toronto closer to.playoff success. An inadequate bottom 6 forward group, a subpar blue line, and inconsistent and injury-prone goaltending all have to be addressed.
You know what would be super Leafy? Toronto gets rid of Marner & Taveras, they both do extremely well on other teams, and the Maple Leafs continue to suck in future playoffs because a certain someone who stays behind only cares about his paycheck and his regular season records.
Not sure where Kyper was coming from in this one. In the Shanahan discussion he was alluding to thinking "big picture". What is weighing eight years of a failed strategy? Being caught up in the emotions of the moment? Makes no sense.
Thank you Bourne for calling out Kyper’s bias towards Marner. There seems to be more than Kyper just thinking Mitch is a good player. Does he have business with Marner or his camp? That would explain why he is willing to put his integrity aside as a host to defend Marner, even when it is justified. He gets very defensive and tries to shift anything criticism towards Matthews/others.
The greatest goalie in world can't stop pucks when you have a bunch of left-overs & has-beens as defensemen. But that's what Toronto has had for years since they decided to put all their cap space in just a few forwards. The Maple Leafs are all regular season supers and playoff pushover puppies. Getting rid of Marner will not change that as long as a certain someone who wears 34 only cares about his paycheck and his regular season records. When you finally get someone who plays with grit then the Leafs will win.
@@people3865 I bet you wouldn't be able to actually find footage of any real hits that Matthews laid in this series. It's a garbage stat when you actually watch the games. His excuse for what happened sounds like he's struggling to find a decent enough reason for missing important games when there isn't an excuse that is good enough. Matthews should be receiving more of the criticism.
The difference between Marchant and Marner is you still get lots from Marchant when he’s not getting points but you get nothing from Mich when he isn’t.
That, and also it's good content. The whole setup with McKee is really quite adroit. I don't know where they came up with that guy, but it's a rare combination. So Kypreos plays the foil at times, and it really juices the conversation.
Ehhh I disagree marner is 100% at fault but this idea the other 3 played well is dumb marner wasn’t the only reason they lost but I get matthews is god in Toronto and could never do wrong
Sorry Kyper, can’t defend that take. Mitch can’t be below two people who literally were out half the series or were sick when he is one of the highest paid players in the league. Nylander had more goals than Mitch and Tavares combined when playing 3 fewer games, and Matthew had more points than both of them combined and he missed one game and was sick the rest. Mitch wasn’t even close to good enough. And Pasta was Mitches man, Willy was in his spot, although it looked bad he was in his spot. Had he left, the middle of the ice would have been completely open. I’m not saying Willy looked good there, but yeah, he was in his spot and Mitch wasn’t covering Pasta
Kyper keeps defending Marner. His childish attitude and contract are unbearable. The fact remains he is the worst contributor in the playoffs of the top 4. No way this player is worth 11 m.
@@stevelouis4664 Numbers on a computer screen don't equal winning. I'm done with all the smart people who don't watch hockey and only see Mitch's secondary assists on paper
@@stevelouis4664 If you actually watched the 2023 playoffs, where he had 14 points in 11 games, you would have seen that Marner had one really good game, and then a bunch of mediocre to bad games, some in which he collected a bunch of fluff points. Very similar to Johnny Gaudreau's 2022 playoffs (14 points in 12 games) where he had one or (perhaps) two really good games and then 10 where he looked like a mediocre perimeter push-over. Stat watching should honestly be illegal.
Marner should have picked up Pasta, end of story. Every Leaf player should have been looking for open players to cover or at least be very close to them. But Marner just floated back.
@@people3865some 2nd pairing offensive RHD’s are stuck behind a 1RHD in a good team and can improve after given the chance to if traded. they’re acquirable
When Kyper said " Big picture, he still has more playoff points than all of them" I legit let out a loud groan. My eyes couldn't have rolled back farther. Is Paul Marner Kyper's bff and we don't know?
Matthews played last playoffs with a wrist that needed surgery and Kyper has the gall to call him soft?? When his golden boy is actively avoiding contact like the plague??
Pelley is doing a Friday presser w Shanahan and Treliving? So Shanahan is staying? Bizarre already. If Shanahan stays, I'm out. I don't need any more of this crap in my leisure time.
He’s got a soft spot for the kid; that’s all To be fair, I really think it was coaching that was the problem. Less the players, unless they simply ignored good coaching.
I'm 61 die hard leaf fan and for the first time I wasn't disappointed because I just don't give a f%#@ about the leafs anymore. Finally, I didn't even watch. Unlike my friends my mental health is great . Go Oilers.
Does this sound familiar? The Leafs don't have a true #1 stud defenceman that you need to win a Stanley Cup. Makar, Hedman etc.. I've been commenting that season after season.
When you make 11 mil, your expected to make the impact of 3 players making 3.5 m. Marner and Tavares aren't even close. Also how didn't they learn the lesson of high cost players leave massive holes when injured. Remember Tavares getting brained on perry's knee?
This had to be mind numbingly painful for Leaf fans. I was rooting for you guys, as an old sabre fan, this team has earned it. They fought Boston every game and came up a hair short. One save from Sammy, what a difference. Hard loss. Sad for the break up, this could have been a special team.
I am honestly relieved. We’ve know for years this mix and salary structure does not work. If they come back in that series I could see them keeping Keefe saying they were impressed by how they came back and won with all the injuries.
Please get Bourne his own podcast. Can't stand listening to the other two but Bourne has terrific analysis and insights. He's always on point. I really struggle to listen to a full K&B episode though because of the nonsense coming out of Kyper and Mckee's mouths.
I will say that we're is Dubus ? You can't blame him for the lose ! Who can you blame for the lose? The players No one else but the people on the Ice . Thanks again for your time and video! Thanks again! Jim
@@people3865He also wanted to trade Marner before Marner had protection and he got canned. mistake. Shanahan deserves more of the blame anyway than Dubas because he’s the one saying yes or no to the trades- Dubas never had the chance to do what he actually wanted.
He screwed the team over when their future was looking better than it has since 1967. Signed Tavares to 11 mil when they didn't need a center, then gave marner and Matthews their deals when he had all the leverage on their rfas. Couldn't prioritize defense, goaltending and toughness. He should be public enemy #1 for the leafs fans
Mathews wasnt healthy. He looked like he was going to pass out on the bench all night. Sammy stood on his head all night only to let 2 heartbreakers in to kill everyones dreams. Going going gone. Marns is not going to make his case as an Auston Mathews money player, by remaining a Leaf in a contract year. In Toronto he is now on the second line. He has to go elsewhere and prove us all wrong. As a hockey fan, game 7 was incredible. I almost pissed my pants by not wanting to leave the game. Now the off season will be the most exciting. All the inevitable change is coming.
They're in the results business. The results show they can't do it, regardless of what they say or how they played in games 5, 6, and 7. Injuries not an excuse. Same crap talk points ... proud of the guys, love these guys, we're close, etc.
You can't try to win when you play3 great games you have to play all 7 games in the series if that what it takes ? Not 3 games but All of them ! Thanks again!
it took 8 years to finally play PO hockey for the last 3 games... these guys are bums top to bottom. Keep 34 and 88,, everyone else is up for trades or u hauls
All this call for change, but has everyone forgot that Dubas left last offseason? That was a bombshell that has not played out yet. Treliving said he wanted to take this season to assess the team and he has. Treiving was hired late in the offseason and did not have much time to make needed changes. Thus willl be the first full off season Treliving has to begin his era. A coaching change is a major move, just as the Oilers if a different coach makes a difference. Removing Shanny is a terribe idea because theres not a better option. Shanny stopped Dubas from trading Knies and a 1st round pick for Fleury and that was huge.
Why does Kyper act like he’s not a Leafs fan? The guy’s main audience is all leafs fans so stop pretending bruh! Big ups to Sammy to actually admit he’s a leafs fan.
You’re tripping. kyper’s whole whole show was found on the premise of being a Leafs only show. Kyper should stop pretending that’s all I’m saying. He grew up in Toronto, watched the leafs as a kid, played for the leafs, writes articles in the Toronto star about them and has a show dedicated to them, an hour now anyway. He’s only lying to himself
I do think Mariner needs to be traded, he is not worth a pay raise right now. The leafs would get something worth while for him. Keefe should also be removed. However, after saying all this. Emotions are still high right now, let the dust settle first. If Tavares wants to stay, then he should take a pay cut and move down the lineup.
The worst part about the Woll injury is that is happened on that nothing goal with 0.1 seconds left. Him not being in the lineup for game 7 gave Boston a physiological boost. If Woll was in net maybe the Leafs crack Boston earlier in that game. But that is not the reason they lost. If the Powerplay went 20-25% through the first 4 games the Leafs could have been up in the series 3-1 instead of behind 3-1. The coaches, Shanahan and Marner need to be gone.
Man lost some respect for Kyper today, he would’ve ripped players like Marner in the past for his playoff performances good on the boys for calling him out today
Either give Brad Treliving full grip of the steering wheel or put a GM that you will. It was clear Brads adds were more beneficial then the Dubis core . Imagine if he could of hired his own coach instead of being forced to keep Keefe
Shanahan what does he do? He hired the gm so he manages one employee and the gm manages the coaches and gets all the players. So there is no need for shanahan. Most useless wasted money. Worse then JT contract
Florida lost 5-1 last night, but they did some things you never saw the Leafs able to do against Boston. PP controlling the puck, switching sides to relieve pressure, winning wall battles, consistent plays toward the net, and hemming Boston in on even strength. Leafs seem to not have many answers when the nice cute plays aren’t working out.
Wow all that to lose 5-1 but I'm sure they feel really good about winning the wall battles lmao maybe let them win a game first before you look to the Panthers for answers
It was as if an old leafs curse found yet another way to take them down. I don’t really believe in curses but this is very strong evidence that something weird is going on here. That being said take away the performance of game one game three and game four of the leafs did very well but those games were a total disaster.
Being a Bruins fan watching this is a Blast! And Boston Kicked Floridas Ass last night 5-1 ! Your telling me theirs a chance :-) fun to be still olaying :-)
Kyper the reason people are not going after Tavares as hard is because he battles out there. Sure, he's slower and no longer an elite scorer worth 11 mill, but he still kills it in the faceoffs, goes into the tough areas to battle for pucks and still contributes offensively. Besides, after their respective contracts are up, who's looking for a raise and who's looking at a reduction in pay? Many many reasons why people are all over your precious Marner.
-Extend Domi, Burtuzzi, Mcabe, Edmunson, Lybushkin -Tavares signs a team friendly deal and drops the C -Mathews becomes new captain -Marner doesn't deserve to be paid more than willy and the leafs won't win a Marner trade. Marner takes a deal and stays in Toronto -keep Keefe -fire the PP coach -Trade Rielly and search for a real threat from the blue line -Run it back another year under Treeliving
Bro, Shanahan is where I start as pelley. Guy came in in 2014, fires nonis. Has lamourello, he's fired. Dubas. Fired. Now treliving. Fires Carlyle, horachuk, not sure if Wilson was prior or not, but Babcock, now Keefe. It starts with Shanahan. My 0.02. Treliving answers directly to pelley. Keefer gone, bring in berube or quenneville. Cheers
this team needs tweaks, not a blow up. We actually made strides in the defence department, just gotta make a few more. Spread the money out a bit more.
How many Leaf fans are or have been in therapy? Every year has been disappointing and yet they tell us that they are focused on getting better every year! 🤯🥴💔
I don't understand how the Leafs can NEVER sign a player without a complete no-move clause? Isn't the point of negotiation that both sides to give a little? How can Leafs not be able to get them to agree to no-move clause that becomes a limited-move clause in the final two years? With the money they throw at these guys how can they not get at least that?
Why are people surprised at the result, again? When you have ~50% of the cap left to form a 'team' around 4 players, the result will always be the same.
Shanny resigns on Friday is my gut, he's going to be fired... but he falls on his sword. I love you all, sorry I couldn't get it done. Still a hall-of-famer player, big whoop for him.
To suggest this team needs to continue is insanity. The core 4 needs to go. Keep Nylander. Management and coaching needs to go. 69 goals are useless if you disappear in the playoffs. Rebuild time.
Marner is the new Holl, punching bag, whipping boy, his face is on dartboards of Leaf fans... lol, if I'm him I'm taking $100 mil to send me packin... with aviator glasses sayin' so long suckas! (I like this guy, and he's a good dude... but we need to shed salary, its a math problem!) Rielly look at moving him out too (if possible) holy jumpin!!!!
Of course Bertuzzi/Tavares had a shaky change, Marner should have chipped Pasta, and Rielly should have been more alert, and Nylander coasting is a bad look --- BUT, this is 100% on Samsonov for not poking the puck when it was less than a stick length away before Pasta even touched it!! Get rid of them all, BUT please blame the OT goal where it belongs --- Sammy. Period.
There was only two, real major issues that the Leafs encountered.. 1. Our Lack of Team defense was an issue in the first two games vs Bruins.. (that is a coaching issue) he has not been able to get this team to play proper defense the entire time he has been here.. That difference, could have gotten us one or two more games before our back was to the wall.. This is a FACT...... 2, Our Powerplay.. Not adjusting our powerplay to an entirely new zone entry and attack is again ( COACHING )... This team should have raced to the blue line with speed and chased a dump in,,,, then force point shots while crashing the net... They failed to adjust and we missed out on maybe, 15 more goals which would have ended this series... In Everything other area, the Leafs matched or exceeded Bruins play... How do we know this --we went to game Seven OT...
Regardless of fault Keefe has got to go because he failed many times not just this year. If the loss to Boston was the 1st series loss you can justify the injuries and coming up a little short-however this isn't a singular incident in a vacuum. He's the coach of multiple failures and he just has to own it.
its not ALL Sheldons fault .Yes he had 4 of the most talented forwards in the leaugue and he could not get them to gel into a top PP unit .Yes he is fully 100% responsible for the awful PP against the Bruins Yes he made a huge blunder starting Samsonov over Woll in the first 4 games However he was not the one that gave the 4 stars all that money before they even won a thing !! Also did not have 2 of those 4 for the whole series .I am inclined to think that had WIllie and Woll had played all the games ,the Leafs would have won that series in 6.cant include Mathews in that group becasue the Leafs WON the 2 he did not play .Bizzarre !!
I think the “weird hit” was a horse collar style take down from McAvoy. The NHL should look into some of those as well, it can be as bad as a knee on knee the way guys are getting bent over backwards.
Leafs fans: it’s the coach. A good coach gets the best out of their players. Did Keefe do that? With Marner? How did he deal with Brodie? What did he do to address his poor play? It’s not complicated here. The coach is responsible for getting the team to play their best. The Leafs were the worst team in every series. Including the Tampa series where they lucked out 3 OT wins. That was not a convincing playoff performance. The performance of the team never matched what they did in the regular season. They lost every game 7. And they kept bringing back the same coach every year with suspect goaltending! That’s on management. A good coach can get their team to beat a defensive system or at least make adjustments. Watching the team struggle to generate offense in the playoffs? A good coach has players going through the wall and play with consistently in their effort. What’s the coaches job here? He should have been fired after the Montreal series. The PP was infuriating….. are we seeing a theme here? What did the coach do? What was the adjustment? It’s the exact same things with underperforming players. We bet on a rookie coach and simply did not manage the players properly. So we have to listen to all this trade Marner nonsense. Look up the stats he played great under Babcock.
