After one of my more controversial videos I've posted on this site, I finally revisit my thoughts on Leagues Cup. With an overall entertaining tournament, there are still some aspects I'd like to see addressed. With that being said, I present the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Leagues Cup 2023.

Agree with the home venue stuff. It's like because LigaMX teams weren't allowed to host games, then we also weren’t able to have many of our pre or post match traditions (like a Guitar Riff or Anthem, in Nashville's case)

Looking at this tournament from a Liga MX fan's persepective, I'd agree that it was fun to watch. Although I'll say at the end of the day most Liga MX fans won't care about this tournament because it is essentially a glorifed pre-season for them.

Ironic considering the current dire state for MX Liga are contemplating getting rid of pro/rel. I think this competition is more for the MX Liga players who desperately need playing time more than MLS Players. which is gonna be more apparent next season for MX Liga

I'm so glad I wasn't the only person bothered by the patches! I even did a (soft) drinking game with some buddies, where we took water shots every time someone's Leagues Cup patch was peeling off. My guess is, it's cheap adhesive and not a proper sewn/heat-pressed patch, because the Kick Childhood Cancer ribbons are having the same problem. But, in the greater scheme of things, I think Leagues Cup proved it could be a good competition, it just needs to work out those wrinkles we saw both before and during the competition.

Those damn patches are so annoying. As a jersey connoisseur, it’s all I could pay attention to!

Love your content and videos! Great point regarding the branding and graphics on Apple Tv. They really should've spent time creating Leagues Cup specific graphics and branding to make it feel like its own separate competition. I'm also surprised you didn't mention any of the issues with the refs and all the controversial calls for both sides. But great video and great analysis. I'm definitely excited for next years edition.

Only reason I cut the refereeing part was because of time tbh. Huge issues on that part, and the fiasco with Liga MX’s statement. I appreciate the support as well!

As an NYCFC fan that went to the Atlas game. There was the leagues cup branding but the supporters still felt like a NYCFC home game. However the fact that many Mexican NYCFC supports chose to Follow Atlas while wearing an NYCFC shirt lead to some issues in the Supporters section and also lead to issues after the game.

Same stuff going on in Columbus when Club America visited, but no issues from what I’ve seen. Bound to happen in cities with large Latino representation

@@Anthony.LaRosa I went to the Minnesota Leagues Cup game and it was very weird without the usual Crew traditions. There was a disconnect between what they were trying to present and what the fans wanted.

I actually like the leagues cup design, it’s it own thing not trying to be a UCL knockoff or World Cup wannabe. Maybe make it 1/3 smaller though.

What about doing the tournament one year each country with its domestic stuff.

If you limit MLS to only 18 clubs, you end losing some of the magic of low ranking teams going on a surprising run in the tournament. Chicago would probably not make a top 18 teams most seasons but they made it out of the knockout stage and they put up a good fight against the Mexican giant America. The Cinderella team this tournament happened to be one of the small LigaMX team, Queretaro, but that could have very easily have been an MLS team. I get that MLS technically has a higher percentage chance of winning but you also have a higher chance of getting MLS Vs MLS games, which tips things in the opposite direction too. Overall, I'll take all the teams being in over the alternatives.

You bring up a good point with those “lower” teams making deep runs. I

@@Anthony.LaRosa I don't agree with not having all of the teams. Then, it fails to showcase MLS's depth--which I think people outside of MLS fans don't see. The top handful of Liga MX teams spend more than any MLS team (outside of Miami), so they are going to be better. (Hopefully, that will change soon.) However, people outside of MLS fans aren't aware that the mid and low table MLS teams are better than the lower Liga MX teams. Also, this is a tournment for Mexican fans in the USA. Neither the US federation nor the Mexican federation really wants this outside of the USA--despite the Mexican federations grumblings. If we limit the teams and play outside of the USA, then what really differentiates the tournament from the Champions League?

@@hebitokubei228 Best is to keep Libertadores meaningful... keep ConcaChampions alive... but also build Leagues Cup as a unique tournament. But you know they have that new "Final Four" tournament, CONCACAF vs CONMEBOL, no details announced yet, but it could be Libertadores and Sudamericana Winners vs MLS and Liga MX Winners (or the two Leagues Cup finalists, idk).

I felt all the games being in MLS stadiums was the biggest issue. It's the first year of the tournament so they can improve on the things like the ball. The first year of anything has it's bumps and hiccups. Hopefully they will improve going forward.

Interesting video. I didn't watch any of Leagues Cup other than a few minutes of Messi's first match, but I was curious how it went. I just have one comment - I don't like that this exists (I would much rather have a greater focus on the Champions League), but if they're going to continue this next year and beyond with just U.S. and Mexico clubs, play matches in Mexico too.

Mexico is a country is which universal agreement in anything is near impossible, specially when it come to something as sacred as fútbol. But the Leagues Cup managed the impossible, everyone hated it. Not a few, not a majority but practically everyone. Do not expect the next Leagues Cup to have many Liga MX teams bringing their senior players.
