Leaking Ford Focus Steering Rack Replacement (1999-2007)

In this video, I replace the steering rack in my 2004 Ford SVT Focus. It was leaking out of one of the ends of the rack and running down the control arm and flinging around in the wheel well. To get the steering rack out, remove the subframe bolts and the sway bar end links, hoses, and steering shaft. Then, the rack can slide out to the side. This video applies to both SVT and non SVT Focus cars. Be sure to get an alignment after so that you don't ruin your tires. I hope you find this video useful!

Yes sir. She is handling daily duties at the moment so there are lots of little things to take care of. But otherwise, things are going well and the heat works so good! I have some more videos in the queue already! Glad you like the focus content. Its hard for me to know what people like!

It is probably a very similar procedure, but I think the 2005 focus may have a slightly different rack part number. But overall I would expect them to be 99% the same.

My fiesta mk6 steering rack leaks somewhere from upper housing (neck). Is it enough to change seals from that area?

Boy that would probably be very hard to do. If it was my money I would want to just get a new rack and be done with it.

Did you have to get an alignment done once you finished or did you just do the alignment yourself?

I did get an alignment. You can get close but you'll never be as good as what an actual alignment shop gets you.

@@RobTheMarkets the job of replacing this rack isn't terrible but I had a lift. It would have had me cussing a little on jack stands but it can be done.

@@605BOLT yessir, im gonna have to do it on stands, definitely can be done just gonna be a pain in the ass. My only problem is that I don’t wanna fuck up my alignment to the extent where I’m not driving straight because im gonna change my rack out today and then head to a shop to get an alignment, had a tooth break off causing my rack to slip when I turn left, kinda scary driving the mofo haha. This video 100% is gonna help out in a bit once I start the job

Not looking forward to doing this on the ground. Lol. Those subframe bolts are probably gonna be awful to break loose with a bar. Lol. I got a notch worn in the rack and the steering binds up when i turn to the right. My pump is leaking pretty good too. Lol. So im swapping the rack, pump, and all those rusty lines at once. Im also getting the SVT style pressure line cause i got an SVT header to swap in there. Lol. Wish me luck. Lol

@@605BOLT yeah. I had a 5 speed mk1 zx3 in highschool like I have now and loved it. Lol. I already did the knuckles, front lower control arms, and drop links. She's getting there. Lol

HI, do you know, st170 steering rack has some differences between simple focus mk1?

I don't know if it does or not. This is a US Spec SVT Focus. I am assuming the process is very similar.

After watching u take that rack out I realized that there was only one car that I've ever pulled the rack out on the passenger side. I'm thinking out loud, but that's interesting tho

@@605BOLT naw naw naw, I watched what way u took it out🤣 I was just telling u that from watching u made me remember of a rack job that I did where I pulled the rack out from the passenger side. That was the only rack I've pulled out from the passenger side ever. Basically I was just pointing out that in general it's pretty rare to have to pull racks out from the passenger side

With a lift it took me and my dad about 3 hours I would guess. Not bad. On jack stands it would be more involved. I'd plan around 5 or so. It would be a pain in the ass but definitely possible.

@@605BOLTyeah my steering rack just went out and I gotta replace it, don’t have the cash to take it to shop so ima have to do it on jacks and good ol concrete bed
