Digging into issues with loose bolts and leaky drain plugs on some new Pyranha boats out there. Update and more from Pyranha below.
Update: 9/1/2021: Pyranha blog post addressing the issue: www.pyranha.com/blog/product-...
Update 8/30/2021: I removed both drain plug housings and removed the silicone that was present, which was really easy. The silicone used on the two looked different, and neither had enough. The Scorch was worst with not enough to even go all the way around. I added AquaSeal, replaced housing and let sit overnight. I've tested both with 1/2 gallon of water; Ozone leaked a few drops in about an hour (seems good enough), and Scorch didn't leak at all. (Actually Scorch leaked a little from the silicone drain plug itself!, but when I cranked it a little harder it stopped.) Not a difficult process, just a bit of a pain and not something one should have to do on a brand new boat. Also sucks b/c a lot of people just won't know and will deal with leaky boat when they don't have to.
Response from Pyranha re Drain Plugs:
"I was worried that might be the case with the drain plug. We made adjustments in manufacturing a while back to make sure this wouldn't be an issue in the future, but a decent amount of time passes between the boats leaving the factory and making it into the shops and then to customers where issues like that are really noticed. Fortunately it is a pretty simple fix, the two screws that hold it on are taken out (they screw into the plastic, no backing nuts inside the hull or anything like that) then it can be removed, the old silicone peeled off and resealed with new silicone or aquaseal etc...
I know it's far from ideal to have to do any work on a new boat, and we would be glad to fix it if we were somewhere nearby, but unfortunately that isn't typically the case. Seeing as there have been a few reports of this, I'm looking into getting some 2oz tubes of silicone sealant we can send out to in the future to hopefully save some people a trip to the store. I'm just checking with the UK first that the ones I found online are going to be comparable to what they use at the factory."

Thanks Matt. Yeah, definitely worth checking, especially on newer Pyranha boats; given your healthy quiver, you probably have a few to check, haha. I love how only four minutes into Wade’s first podcast episode with you he calls out your “boat buying problem.” Don’t listen to him. We all benefit from your collection! 😊

Thanks for choosing our kayaks, and sorry you've experienced these issues! We have referred the info back to Production and QC to prevent such issues going forward, and have identified that a number of drain bung collars had insufficient sealant around where they fit to the kayak - we will have some instructions out on how to fix the latter this week.

Thanks Pyranha. I appreciate the info and it’s good to hear you are working towards a resolution for customers. I’ve always had excellent customer service from your team, and that means a lot. Keep up the great work. I’m loving my Scorch and Ozone…even more now they are nice and dry. 😉

Pyranha Kayaks I’m having the same issue with my ripper. Crazy amount of leakage. I did watch your video. Just need to know what is the best sealant to use. Your video says silicone but I read somewhere you were sending out aquaseal which I did not think was silicone…? So what’s best? I gotta stop this crazy leak for good. Thanks.

Love the color schemes on both kayaks. Collecting boats is an addictive passion as well as collecting other pieces of gear such as paddles, PFD’s, etc. the list goes on but it’s definitely a healthier and more beneficial hobby than cocaine and hookers 😂

The last brand new boat I purchased was a Dagger Mamba that I bought in 2014. As soon as I took it out of the plastic I went over all of the bolts and most of them were loose. After tightening things up it's a nice, dry ride. I go over my boats once a year to make sure everything stays tight.
@kevinhill.8
@kevinhill.8 2 года назад
I’ve made a habit of doing the same. Unfortunately my experience a Dagger boats has been less than dry, despite everything being snug. I touch on this is my most recent review of the Code: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-exBhSTew66s.html

Great video man. I noticed you have a 2013 star/allstar on the end of your quiver there. How do you like it, and how do you find the plastic. I'm not a fan of mine and the plastic is pure trash
@kevinhill.8
@kevinhill.8 2 года назад
Thanks James. The last two boats are a 2013 All Star and a 2010 (era) Star. I bought the All-Star new, and we got the Star used fairly recently for my wife for $125. I really only use the All Star at the play park these days, so can't say I'm testing the plastic much. The plastic on my wife's Star seems a bit brittle, but I'm not sure how it was treated (my boats are always stored indoors), and if it breaks, oh well, given how little we paid. :)

I thought the water in my Ozone was just from practising rolls, ‘til I watch your video. Looking at video a friend took, it looked like the boat was actually sitting lower in the water. Doing the vertical set-up and a quart of water, I got 1 drop per second. That’s 60 drops per minute, 1800 drops in half an hour. I don’t want that. Aquaseal on order. Thanks for the video and follow-up info.

Shoulda bought a Jackson… no holes through the boat besides the cockpit itself.

You know it! And so do I. We’ve currently got 7 JK boats, and that’s one of my favorite thing about them! 😊 I will say though, the two boats in this video ran very dry once the drain plug issue was fixed. And my Ripper 2 and Firecracker are also both very dry, and both have no drain plug, which I love.
