We're taking a quick look at Leanne Platter, ex-wife of Hoyt and mother of Luanne, who enjoys drinking, manipulation, and rubbing feet. You, yes you, can support us on Patreon: / squirreltactics
Hey folks, just a quick peak behind the curtain here, it took four days and over 20 cycles of upload video, get copyright blocked, edit video and so on to get this thing finally loaded. The video was originally over 25 minutes long and included every word of dialogue Leanne had, but a lot of it had to be cut. So, if you're wondering why some of your favorite parts are missing, well, that's why.
I love how this episode avoids the "women abusing men is funny" double standard by portraying Leanne as the abusive drunk that she is and having everyone be horrified by the way she treats Bill. It's aged really well.
Same. Similarly, I always felt for Dooley when he got felt up by Serena in Get Your Freak Off. He clearly looked and sounded violated and disturbed. The other kids looked quiet and shocked. Just because some kids want to go too far doesn't mean they all want to/should. Harassment goes both ways.
"Leanne's first husband is hiding out on an oil rig and he swears he's not coming ashore until I fax him her death certificate" is the most hilariously terrifying burn I've ever heard.
Having just rewatched that just now and thought about Hoyt makes me think he opted to go back to the "oil rig" before ever facing Leanne again hence the retcon in his only appearance.
@@SuperWolseyI believe the Oil Rig Hoyt & Just got out prison Hoyt are 2 different characters. It feels that in the early seasons Hoyt actually was hiding on a Oil Rig & was in regular communication with the Hills especially Hank & Luanne. Where as in the late series episode where Hoyt makes his introduction, Hank never met the man, Hoyt hasn’t seen his daughter since she was little & doesn’t say anything about his ex wife or the trailer home. My theory is the original Hoyt still existed for awhile after Peggy’s family got reconned (you know, the new mama platter) up until his introduction episode. The line “He’s not coming to shore until I fax him her death certificate” & if “oil rig” really did mean prison, that is not how the prison system works. You can’t just leave because you know your ex wife is dead or use the place to hide from her until then.
@@AddableStone13 Maybe it's better to think that King of the Hill in general just split into two different canons after a certain point. I mean, there was supposedly a severe change-up in writing staff towards the end (and given all the retcons that were happening, it shows).
It’s such a small detail, but the fact that hank trusts dale with his son’s protection is pretty great. Dale may be a nut but hank knows he’s a good father.
I remember a later episode where Joseph gets an offer to join a new school on a football scholarship because he’s an athletic prodigy. Hank, desperate to have Joseph stay in Tom Landry to play football there, tries to convince Dale to not have Joseph go to the school. Dale looks at Hank and asks him honestly if he’s thinking about what Joseph wants or if he only cares about football. And Hank goes silent.
@@NeedlessExpositionif I remember right wasn't dale pressuring/forcing him to go to that school? I usually just put on the show in the background and it's been a few years and it was only twice I watched
Hank having an immediate concern for his son's safety is parenting gold! I love how even before Peggy his mind goes to protecting Bobby. Plus as it's shown in later scene Peggy really can take on LeAnn. But gotta love Hank being a great dad!
Yeah, as a parent, I would say she is worse than Hoyt. At least he somewhat cares about Luanne and went back to prison so that her husband would be free. Leanne was an abusive asshole who even Dale thought was a menace.
@@megamanj2004X I always thought that was funny. I think he said "Nothing ladylike about her, all over me like a dang 'ol cat, talkin' bout 'No means no.' " Boomhauer's a player, but he has standards. Update: I quoted this before watching the vid with the full quote. Nvm lol.
The older I get, the more I love luanne. The fact that she just lived a horrible, sad, tragic early life and still grew up to be such a beautiful, kind, pure, innocent person....just such a testament to how inherently good people can be.
So we ignore her betraying Bill in the beauty salon episode, her taking Bobby behind Hank/Peggy back to the crazy Christian lady, her taking cash advances and trying to blame Hank for it, and her trying to ruin Dale then Strickland to have a fancy wedding. She not a saint like you say
@@kidferocious not booksmart, but she clearly understands mechanics to the point there's no way that she has a low IQ, although for some reason that part about her got dropped. Remember in season 1 when she fixed Hank's truck, identifying the issue by sound alone, when 4 men including the truck's owner / lover (you know how Hank is with his truck) spent all day stumped? At least early on she seemed like she had a LOT of untapped potential as a highly skilled mechanic. She was tragically smart tbh, if her talents were nurtured she could have been a child prodigy mechanic or maybe machinist. I know a lot of clearly smart (quick to learn, open minded) people who could have been successful if not for their circumstances.
I'm pretty sure Leanne was lying about her age. She was always trying to come off younger than she was. It was also implied that Hoyt was not her first marriage in The Company Man when Hank said Peggy wore a dress to "one of Luanne's mama's weddings". I hope a 15 or 16 year old hasn't been married. Let alone more than once.
Same, I’m pretty sure she’s lying since she claimed “most people think me and Lulu are sisters.” Folks like that tend to always be chasing the “glory days” of their youth.
she clearly looks 40. . but then again, so does Hank, and according to the the show, Hank is 34 as well. so it may be more a commentary on teenage pregnancy and how she is trailer trash. to add even more tragedy to the daughter Luanne's backstory. edit : aaand now i looked on the wiki and says hank ks 41. . .i dunno. i could swore i saw somewhere said that Hank was 34. so then, maybe she is in her 40's. she certainly looks like it.
@@gaylewinds4808 that's what i'm saying is that i always thought hank was 40, but then i coulda swore i read somewhere he was 34, but now i can't find it
Fun Fact: Luanne got her name because she was supposed to be named after her mother, but Leanne immediately got drunk after the birth and wrote the wrong name on the certificate. Leanne could have had it changed, but there was a $50 fee to legally change the birth certificate and Leanne figured Luanne was technically a name so why waste the money?
This is one of the messes I can’t blame Peggy for getting herself into. She was faced with a hell of a choice; Luanne dropping out of school to take care of her mother, or housing Leanne. Peggy clearly had to choose the lesser of two evils. This was the epitome of a rock and a hard place decision and she has every right to be angry about it.
It is 100% reasonable why Peggy made that choice. The problem arises when she complains about the consequences of HER actions. But yet again, it is Peggy we're talking about.
@@toms.a.savage7232 But that brings me to my original point; what OTHER choice did she, Luanne’s only responsible mother figure, have at that moment in time? Leanne was hopeless and Luanne was too enamored with the idea of having her mother around to hear otherwise. And at that point in time, just dimbulb enough to actually drop out of school on an impulse. Peggy kinda has every right to complain. She made the worst choice to protect Luanne when it’s not a choice she should ever have HAD to make. Yes, it was her choice, but the alternative was watching Luanne screw her life over by leaving school to take care of her deadbeat mother. That’s a hell of an awful choice.
@@toms.a.savage7232tbh, I don't really think it's unfair to vent or acknowledge a situation even if you had a hand in it. We as people do it all the time like complaining about being late for work but not planning ahead for heavy traffic on your commute.
yeah that seems completely out of character, Bill was waaaaaaaaaay outta pocket there, dear god, he's lucky the fire department didn't have to scrape him off the pavement 💀
“Bill is the best thing to happen to me since I met your daddy” She tells Luanne bluntly right to her face that she cares more about a date than her daughter.
It’s amazing that Hoyt and Leanne stayed together for as long as they did without somebody getting killed as well as Luanne being as good of a person as she is.
She may be lying about her age but it is a small possibility that she's younger than she looks because smoking, drinking, and drama (at least the kind that ladies like Leanne and Lenore causes) can cause people to age horribly.
She could be. Smoking and drinking way too much can really do a number on you. I think it’s more likely that she was also traumatized at a young age and wants to avoid being anything but a young party girl.
@@hippothehippo yeah she could be, also it's not mentioned but she was obviously no stranger to meth, that shit will age you on fast-forward, especially when combined with ciggies and booze.
Leanne was CLEARLY lying about her age. Also, am just now realizing that Leanne was probably trying to entice Hank by doing her ablutions with the bathroom door open😮
Leanne reminds me of my mom. I watched king of the hill literally every day for several years as it aired on adult swim, and every time this episode came on, I felt deeply for Luanne, and still do. The false promises, the addiction, the violence, the boundary issues from prison. Props to the writers for getting this aspect of this sort of thing right.
I love episodes where Peggy goes into "mama bear mode". This and her confronting Buck Strickland over Hank's suspsension were some of mu favorite moments in the series
My theory for Bill claiming not to know Leanne despite them both being at Peggy and Hanks wedding is maybe Bill didn't speak to her or remember her, I've been to parties and didn't speak to specific people, then attend another party and notice that person better, and they've said we've met before without me remembering.
The fact Luanne grew up to be as stable as she could be is a miracle. Plus with all that untapped potential like being great with cars I'm glad her parents aren't in her life after she had her daughter. They don't deserve to be grandparents
@@JimMilton-ej6zi i mean we see the exact moment her parents messed up in the first episodes. Luanne basically had to carry that and have relapses much like Hank and his parents
LuAnne used her experiences with her parents about what not to do. When the Hills got hooked on cigarettes she told Hank, Peggy and Bobby that she came from a dysfunctional household and wouldn't allow that to happen again.
Lets really look at the line "Bill's the first good thing to happen to me since I met your daddy" which implies that Leanne saw Luanne as a burden, not considering her a silver lining in her terrible life. Also my theory for why Leanne was arrested again is either Hank or Peggy or possibly Dale called the cops for Bill, it sounds in character.
Yeah, people not reacting to the abuse of Bill as hardly as they would've an abused woman is reflective of reality, but at least this show didn't depict it as cute and funny; you're meant to be horrified. Also, can we talk about how much physical strength Peggy has? She stopped a stabbing hand in mid-flight with little effort, then sent Leanne flying with a kick. Her athleticism is pointed out in many episodes, yet she never brags about it.
Her athleticism might be the only thing Peggy DOESN'T brag about. Good Lord, she calls spaghetti and meatballs spaPeggy and meatballs like she freakin' invented the dish.
@@Eric6761 Yeah, she freaked out about that one kiss, which was beyond hypocritical considering that she lied to Hank about being a virgin when they got married, even knowing how important that was to Hank.
Honestly they are both bad equally just in different areas. Luannes dad is a con man so he brings problems from the outside in while her mom traumatized Luanne with how much she didn't want to go back to the trailer inner wise. Also Hank can definitely relate with how bad his parents are
It isn't too surprising Leanne and Bill never met, considering Bill is known to drink and eat himself sick at weddings. I think they mention that in Dale's wedding episode
The part about Bill and Leanne not just staying at Bill's makes even less sense when you notice Bill is in his robe, meaning he had have gone home once already.
If I had a nickel for Bill being in toxic relationships with ladies that includes their name starting in the letter “L”, I’d have a dime. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice.
He's like Superman and his LLs. Lois Lane, Lana Lang, some mermaid who also has the initials L.L. initials. And 50s TV Superman actor George Reeves' fiancée (who probably is the one that killed him) was named Leonore Lemmon.
It always made me so sad when Leanne said to Luanne that Bill was the best thing to happen to her since Hoyt 😢 It made me feel sad because my mom always told me that I’m the best thing to ever happen to her. That should be every mother’s mantra ❤
I do appreciate he chooses Dale. Boomhauer might be a better choice, but he’s clearly not a very tied down family man that understands kids. Bill is useless - but I could see Dale accepting his role as “guardian” seriously. Plus at least there he has a friend in Joesph to hang out with
I’ve met many people like Leanne, and their early lives were too awful to repeat. This drama is tame compared to the hell they raise on the daily. “We’re not sisters anymore” is how they feel when it all falls apart, because they never got away from the past.
Women that casually PUNCH men in the arm like that are weirdly common. (Not a friendly jab, but a full on angry punch) just taking their anger out on a random man. I think they deserve equal treatment. Enjoy that bruise little lady!
I love Stephen Root so much, the way he reads "Dohhh, that's jus' a lil' fungus" is so fun like you can hear Bill relaxing around Leanne for one moment before disaster
The funniest thing about Luanne is how she's written when it comes to her family. Shes able to talk about her mother's trial but they had to protect her about her dad's jail time and to some extent, Hank too.
@@rosesweetcharlotteshe's definitely her daughter to Peggy. Peggy even wanted more kids, so I don't think she ever struggled to see her that way once she'd moved in, if not before.
@@rosesweetcharlotteEspecially as Luanne may've been a baby around the time Peggy and Hank were having fertility issues too. Though, even in her childhood, the Hills could've took Luanne in whenever Hoyt or Leanne got in a mess.
Here a continuity error for you. How could Luanne miss her prom testifying against her mom. But in the first episode of the show, she is also crying about her wig in beauty academy? Prom is high school, and there is no way she could pass how she is. But to the point. She couldn’t be in beauty school already if she missed her prom. I understand too for court cases being days or months away. But there is showing that this would be way after her graduating high school.
Actually it could have been like when middle &high-schoolers start submitting things to academies just so they'll get accepted after they graduate high school,
@@RoninRen That could be. But I just thought of something. Before lucky, how could Luanne not just ask another man around her age at the time to go to prom. I’m sure there wouldn’t be many that want to go but don’t have a date.
Did the show ever go into Bill's childhood much? I know his dad was abusive in some rather vaguely defined ways, but I don't think I know anything about his mom.
Damn, Hank and the others turned out decent despite have such crappy parents: Cotton Hill, Maddie Platter, Eric Dauterive, Hoyt and Leane Platter, General Gum.
I paused the video and call that lady a b word four times and pressed play only to have you have a clip of Hank calling her b word. Thank you very much for being on the same page
You know another reason (completely coincidental)why Leanne was in Hank &Peggy's wedding video, was that animators probably accidentally drew Luann at their wedding, but then edited her design to make it look like Leanne was there, also keep in mind that Lenore probably kept Bill from talking to other party guests(as wasn’t it implied that she would get jealous when she'd see Bill talking to other women?), also that statistically lots of divorcees, that even though they don't reconcile, for some reason they just live together,
I figured the same thing about Lenore not letting Bill near Leanne at the wedding. There's also a good chance he was just too drunk. He drank so much at Dale and Nancy's wedding that he got sick.
So glad I stumbled upon on this channel. I do love that you drop the relevant real-world tidbits like Real Stories of the Highway Patrol in your vids because that unlocked a part of my brain I haven't thought about in a minute.
I really feel bad for Luanne she truly had a horrible mother who never loved her im glad she had peggy and hank in her life to me they became surrogate parents to her i also feel bad for bill in this episode he always end up in situations like this
Realistically on the domestic abuse comment, no one says nothin about it when men do it to women in that kinda scenario, either. Decision paralysis there is VERY common regardless of the gender of the individuals involved and southern families have a habit of keeping it quiet and to themselves
I agree, however I have also seen this type of thing go down and the guy was promptly dragged behind a shed by a group of guys and beaten within an inch of his life.
Can confirm. Hell, I was I victim of abuse and a witness to DV as a child and teenager and even I chickened out and didn’t call CPS as a 17 year old when the little boy across our street was getting abused worse than me and his single mom might have been using. I still feel awful about that, I hope he’s doing better but I doubt it. It’s hard to report it, you always worry that either the foster system will be worse or social services won’t do anything and then the kid will get abused even more because they visited and it pissed the parents off. Or if it’s two adults that the abusive partner will up the violence if they think people are finding out and they might lose their victim.
Huh, never noticed before, but the part where Dale says "FOOOOOOORK!!!" and then moves, we briefly see bill in his apron, apparently no longer wearing any pants.
Re Leanne's age - she's clearly lying about her age. Remember, makes jokes about her and Luanne sisters. It's very obvious she is lying about her age when she says 34.
I know someone who got married at 14 to a 25 year old, this was in rural america back in the 60s. The man wanted his 15 year old wife to give birth to thier child in a log cabin that was located on an island in the middle of a lake. So this shit with hoyt and Leanne is totally plausible.
You have a point. But some people age slowly or age horribly especially if they're drug addicts or abuse alcohol 😅. I have a cousin who is my age who drinks a lot and looks older than me. My dad often drank alcohol on most days and didn't take care of himself and looks older than 56. While mom is 54 and people often mistake her for my sister 😅
12:37 I've dated women like that as well Squirrel. And I learned that the cops will not let you stay a night at the station just because your scared of your girlfriend.
I will say without a shadow of a doubt Leanne is WORSE then Hoyt. This is all do to the ending of their respective episodes, and how Luanne interacts with them both. To Luanne, her dad is her hero. Looking up to him, and seeing him as a good person, with Leanne it seems more like Luanne wants her attention more. Luanne knows her mom has issues but would rather ignore them for her attention, unlike her dad where she genially sees him as a good person. Finally their endings. Leanne's is self explanatory as she makes a fool of herself, abuses Bill, steals his car and abandons her daughter. Hoyt however I feel realized he really fucked up this time, and how much of a pos he's been to everyone especially Luanne. Him knowing how much she looks up to him, and what her finding out the truth could do to her. While its scummy to hie it from her, he's doing it in the end to protect her. Which is an admirable thing. Both cut themselves off from Luanne, however Leanne did it for a selfish reason. Hoyt cut himself off for her(not just because he was being locked up) but also because Luanne is better without him. But maybe Im looking WAY to deep into this.
If Bill was smart enough not to freakin offer alcohol to a recovering alcoholic and had a tiny bit of a spine and control... Who am I kidding, its Bill. Unfortunate... since if they both stayed Sober they'd make a good couple, Bill loves giving attention and fawning over women, perfect for Leanne
What's interesting to me is that Leanne seemed fine with Bill running out of money. Not like I think she really loves him, but I think she was willig to hold out til next paycheck. So, if Bill had just told her he had no money left and still got his cream, it's possible she would have been his next toxic marriage.
It's very possible. She wasn't a great person off of alcohol, but she certainly got a lot worse with it. If she stayed sober it's possible she could've straightened out incrementally, however unlikely that is
One rather depressing thing to think about is the implication that Leanne is so used to men using her sexually that she feels like she HAS to give Bill something sexual in return. It didn't even cross her mind that Bill would just be happy to hang out with her
