I have to add my praises of this TRUE raw beginner video. I learned more from it than any other "beginners" CBG video than any other. Just teaching that basic strum was worth so much.
Thanks for your praise Michael. I tried to remember back to when I started out to learn to play...and the basic knowledge that I needed to have in order to get going with it. I wish that I had somebody that was patient and someone who could teach me the process slowly...so that I could grasp hold of it. That is the formula that I have tried to adopt in order to help others get a nice sound out of the geetar after their first lesson or two. That early success is what excites people to want to learn more. I delighted that it has helped you to get going too . Cheers Gazza
I am delighted to hear that Michael. It gives me much pleasure in being able to help you guys n gals get started. Once do do start to get the hang of it...there will be many hours of simple pleasure to come :)
Great video for a beginner. This has been a really good instruction lesson for an absolute beginner. I have watched many “beginners” videos that were too complex to follow. This video was the right amount of information at the right pace. I got it! I’ve even added my own variation. Every alternative slide I don’t include the lower D (thick) string. I strum the middle at high (thin) strings only. This give it a great variation. Can I play it perfectly - NO. But I’m now making a sound that sounds like something bluesy and that has got me going. Thank you VERY VERY much!
Nick, I am delighted to hear that my friend. You are on your way now. That pleases me very much. I hope to see some of your tunes on You Tube one day. Cheers Gazza
Thanks for the lesson. It was easy for me to follow. It's exciting that I can actually make it sound like you did. I realized I'm actually playing this thing. Up until now I thought I could only build them not play them.
Thanks for those tips. I'm just getting into the 3 string cigar box guitar. It is such a fun instrument. You explain it very well for me as a beginner 🙏🙏🙏
Glad to hear that you are getting right into it John. I am not sure which tutorial that you have watched...but I have done 3 now...so have a look at all of them...they will help you along your fun journey. Cheers Gazza.
This is by far the best video I have seen for absolute beginners like me. I really like the way you gradually go through each step and explain what you are doing, your slow and relaxed style makes the whole process easy to follow. As soon as I have finished building my fretless CBG I will be playing this video numerous times as I practice. Thank you so much.
I am delighted that you like my CBG tutorial. I am working on another one at the moment. I will keep the format the same as the recent one so that it is as easy as possible to follow. I hope that you get some enjoyment and benefit from it. Good luck from the Old Aussie Guy :)
My pleasure my old mate. I am delighted that you are building a geetar....and learning to play it. The whole process will give you many hours of pleasure I am certain. :)
Im wondering why you went with DAD and not GDG like all the other cbg videos do? Not a criticism, just a question from a newbie. Wonderful video btw and looking forward to many more. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Doesn’t make ya seasick when you’re drunk on a boat 😂 Thanks for this video seeing everything from the perspective of the player is so much easier to follow
Thanks Mindy for your comments' I am here to help others learn to play the cigar box guitar...and hopefully get the pleasure that I have derived from learning to play it as well. I am also here to learn how to play mine better. If you care to look thru my videos...you will see players who I admire and who have helped me learn stuff along the way. I am delighted that this overhead perspective helps you. I find it easier for me to demonstrate the motions this way too. Have fun playing geetar girl :)
@@mindysmith4645 -Thank you Mindy. How did you go with the video? Were you able to play those little riffs OK? |I am thinking of doing another tutorial...taking those riffs and adding a couple more to them to make the tune a nit more interesting as people advance along with their skills :)
Hello, and thank you for this video! I just purchased my first CBG and I really enjoy the natural blues sounds that come from it, even when just playing the strings open. This is a really good starting point to get strumming down and learn a couple of other little "tricks", such as when you mentioned adding the vibrato. The other "trick" I noticed is how you changed it up a little with your pull-offs from the 5th fret to the 3rd fret, changing the sound from just sliding back and forth to adding an extra beat, if you will. Very nice! New subscriber here, going to check out your other CBG videos!
Glad to help you get started Marc. Congrats on getting yourself a CBG. I agree...just the ringing out of an open chord sounds awesome. Keep strumming my friend. Cheers Gazza :)
That;s a great question my friend. With cigarbox guitar...there are NO rules. You can play it behind your back whilst sitting on your head and plucking it with your little toe if you like to play it that way! I can play it ...with it sitting on my lap... and also in the conventional position. However...I prefer to play it lap style for several reasons. It feels much more comfortable playing in that position for me...I can see exactly what I am doing in terms of picking the strings and choosing the frets...I can use a hip flask slide ...my prefered slide these days(which I cannot use in the conventional position) ...I can slide right up to the full extent of the neck or even beyond...which I cannot do in the conventional position. It is entirely up to you my friend. Try both ways...and find out which works best for you.. Remember...there aint no rules! Cheers Gazza :)
I vary my tunings between open D, E & G. Open D and E are good for another reason. I mostly use Open D & E because they have a great bluesy tone...and I can use it for accompanying myself when I am playing a 6 string guitar which I also tune to Open D & E. Open D and E are easier to play for me on the 6 stringers...because their fret patterns are the same as on a 3 string guitar. They are just an octave higher... on the other 3 strings. Cheers Gazza :)
Yes sir I'm a complete beginner with no experience at all. I've watched this over and over and I'm getting better but just can't figure out exactly when you're strumming the two strings together. Are you strumming once completely opened and then put slide on fret and strum again? Thank you for your help
Hi Attila, thank you for joining my channel. On this particular 3 string geetar, I like to use Ernie Ball Regular Nickel wound Slinky Guitar strings in the green packet.Of those strings...I use the 3rd (17g), 4th(26g) and 5th(36g) :)
Hi Werner, thanks for your interest. I am glad that you like my CBG tutorial.I hope that it was of some help to you. I am currently doing another one to post soon on You tube. It is wonderful to see so many people becoming interested in this wonderful instrument :)
Great video, thanks. Have subbed to the channel. One small thing, when you started playing and explaining, the left/right movement of the camera was a bit sea sickening to watch. Thanks for the lesson, lots to learn and practice. Cheers
Sorry for making you feel crook Raymond...but no pain...no gain my friend :) I put the camera on my head to film the tutorial. I find it the nest way to show both the slide playing and finger strumming. I will try to keep my head still for you in the future. Enjoy playin your CBG :)
Hi zaranator7764. You are very clever ! I cannot fool you! But you know what ? You got an EXTRA 9 minutes for FREE !!! How lucky are you!!!. In fact...you got the whole darn video tutorial for free. So what are you whinging about! Have a nice day...or will you whinge about that too. It costs nothing either !Cheers Gazza :)
Dave, I suggest that you DON'T watch any of my other RAW BEGINNER tutorials( that I do in my own time...without any financial gain...just because I want to help others get started with Cigar Box Guitar playin....and give them the help and knowledge that I needed to know when I started out)... because they will just frustrate you. Have a nice day Dave. Cheers Gazza
Wow...that is a big compliment...to put me and Juzzie Smith in the same sentence! Juzzie Smith was one of the cbg players that got me enthusiastic about learning in my early days of playing. I am delighted that you enjoyed the tutorial. I am just about to make another one...so keep a lookout for that on this channel. Thank you for your encouragement my friend. I am glad that it was fun. ..because that's what cigar box guitar playing and building is all about. Cheers Gazza :)
@cigarboxgeetar9417 Funny you should say that because it was Juzzie that got me into it as well. I just built my first one. I started playing it lightly because I was afraid of breaking it. Then I just let loose, and oh my God it is smooth. And dirty at the time.
@@mosfet51 -that is a coincidence my friend. Do you live in Australia? Juzzie is a great musician and I love his stuff too. Its great that you are starting to relax and rip into it. You must be gaining some skills and confidence with that. Awesome. Please keep in contact. Cheers Gazza. Keep the fun going :)
@cigarboxgeetar9417 I live in Florida. Those Space X rockets you see launching on the TV, that's basically my backyard. Between you, Juzzie, and my harmonica teacher Jason Ricci, my blues vernacular is getting better. I have your web page. I'll send you a pic of my cbg
@@mosfet51 - Florida eh?: Thats a similar climate and ambence to where I live in the land downunder :) My auantie used to live there. It sounds like a great place. You cant do better than Jason Ricci for learning the harp! I would love to see your cigar box guitar ..Cheers Gazza
