Thank you for this video - I was thrown in the paint section at Home Depot with no clue about paint. These videos have been a life saver.

I think they have some wrong information about oil and water based paints: They say water based is safe over oil, but oil isn't safe over water based. Truth is: -Oil can be applied over water based -Water based can NOT be applied over oil based paint.

Water can be used over oil with the correct prep and primer

Both jg-qb8dn & Kelpikl are correct. ----- Jg-qb8dn is correct in pointing out the error in the video. He didn’t give time frames, but I will. Time Stamp: 1:18 - Below Text “Oil be applied over latex without special processes” The above statement taken from video is incorrect! Oil Base (Top Coat) can go over top of Water Base (Top Coat) all day long without anything done. Time Stamp: 1:56 - Below Text “Latex can be applied over Oil without needing special processes” The above statement taken from video is incorrect! If you try to putting Latex(Top Coat) over a Oil Base (Top Coat) with no special processes, Prepare yourself for the biggest Banana you have ever seen! The Latex Paint will begin peeling off the surface in sheets or even in snowflakes. ------ JG-qb8dn was right in pointing out the flaws in the video, but the wording he used towards the end of his comment was a little vague which caused Kelpikl to respond. JG used the below wording: “Water base can NOT be applied over Oil based paint.” The wording isn’t the most accurate. Kelpikl response is correct! JG should of said: “Water Base (Top Coat) can NOT be applied over Oil Base (Top Coat), unless special processes are done.” 1 Way - To paint Water Base over Oil Base If you had Oil Base (Top Coat) on a surface, You could paint the surface with Oil Base (Primer). Once, the Oil Base (Primer) fully cured, you could paint over the Oil Base (Primer) with Water Base (Top Coat). The Oil Base (Primer) would act as a transition and promote adhesion so the Water Base (Top Coat) could stick. 2 Way - To paint Water Base over Oil Base If you had Oil Base paint (Top Coat) on a wood surface, You could strip the Oil Base paint off by sanding the Wood back down to Bare Wood. Than you can paint over top of the surface with Water Base (Top Coat). *Using Water Base (Primer) before the Water Base (Top Coat) could also be done **Optional Most Paints don’t absorb into Wood. They create a film on the surface of the wood. When you sand the Wood, you begin removing the surface layers of the wood where the Paint dried at. If you sand enough, you can get back down to the bare wood. It would be labor intensive, but it can be done. (The above 2 Ways I mention ties into what Kelpikl was trying to say) Way 1 - Primer Method Way 2 - Correct Prep Method Their are a lot of other ways to do it as well. I just wanted to give 2 examples to showcase what he was saying. --------- A few other errors I saw in the video which no one mentioned are the following: Time Stamp: 4:00 Flat Sheen isn’t very washable, but it hides defects very well. You often want to put Flat in Low Traffic Area’s such as on a Ceiling. You would never want to put Flat on a Wall, unless the House your putting it on is a Rental or is a House your planning to sale which is why you would buy it because it’s cheap. Eggshell is actually praised for how washable it is compared to Flat. If a person didn’t want their Walls to be Shiny and maintain Wash Ability, Eggshell would be the perfect Sheen. Satin is actually the middle Sheen. It is great every where. Semi-Gloss is actually the highest Sheen. What the video doesn’t mention is Semi-Gloss is the highest Sheen a Water Base Paint can go. You can’t make a Water Base Paint with Gloss. If people tell you otherwise, they are lying to you and you have allowed yourself to be conned by them. Water based paint is made with Water and Water is just not that shiny. You can try as much as you want to get it shiny, but it will never reach a Gloss state. Oil Base paints are the true Gloss paints. Oil can reach the shine required to be considered a Gloss. Oil Base is the Highest Sheen possible among both Water & Oil. ---- Once, you understand the above information, you can see how a typical house may be painted on inside. Flat: Ceiling or as Primer Eggshell: Walls Satin: Walls Semi-Gloss: Doors, Trim, Base Boards, Crown Moldings, & High Splatter/Wash Down Area’s such as Kitchen Wall next to stove, Dining Room Wall next to Dining Table where Family Eats, or Bathroom Wall where the Heat from Shower mixes with AC Vents Cold air creating a condensation or black smut to form which needs to be washed down. Gloss: Not really used *Key thing to mention is Paint Evolution Many Years ago, Water Base Paint didn’t hold up as well as Oil Base paint. People use to recommend Oil Based paint (Gloss) for things like Trims, Doors, & Baseboards. Water Base Paint has evolved a great deal in past 50 years or so years. Stronger Paint Formula’s have been created for Water Base paints. This is why Oil Base (Gloss) paints are slowly fading away from interior use. Older Generations of House could still have Oil Base paint though. It is just something worth mentioning. **2nd Key thing to mention is Oil Base Painted Objects where often mobile Objects. Oil Base Paint smells very bad which is why the video talks about Ventilation. Most things people painted with Oil Base where things they could take outside. Than paint it outside and bring it back inside after it was dry/smell went away. Door - Take Hinges off Door Take Door outside and paint it with smelly paint. Let the smell disappear outside and bring Door back inside when it dry. Same with Trim and Molding etc. ***3rd Key Thing to mention about Oil Base. You never want to put it on your Walls if you could at all help it. The only time you would put Oil Base paint in your House Walls is if you was forced to due to Stains on your Wall. - Oil Base Paint (Primer) is often used as a Stain Blocker to cover up Water Spots or Smoke Stains (Yellow Nicotine Stains) If you had water damage or person who smokes a lot inside their house, you would need to block it with Oil Base Primer before you applied a Water Base (Top Coat) Otherwise, the Stains will Bleed thru the Water Base (Top Coat). They would keep bleeding thru back to the surface. ****4th Key Thing to mention about Oil Base What ever it touch’s you often have to throw away because trying to clean the item is nightmare! - Brushes - Roller Covers - Paint Trays It’s a nightmare to clean! The chemicals used to remove Oil Base can also damage a lot of things. ------- Time Stamp 6:20 Better Choice would be an Eggshell or Satin paint Eggshell & Satin can still mute the defects while maintaining wash ability. Walls are often touched a lot especially if you have Kids or Evil Relatives who insight on dirtying your Walls. Limey Bastards. ------- Time Stamp 9:35 Don’t forget about induction times. It can vary from product to product, but they often will say: Mix Epoxy + Hardener. Than wait 15 mins for the production to accumulate. Than apply Epoxies are very popular on Garage Floors for Residential Houses. You apply the epoxies and broad cast decorative flakes. It’s pretty! --------- Time Stamp: 9:50 The image Cabinet Coating is such a poor example. Think Cars! Trucks! Have you ever pumped Gas and accidentally put to much and got Gas on your Car? Than started freaking out thinking the paint is going to fall off Car afterward? Surprise, the paint should hold strong! Tough stuff brought to you by a Urethane. Can’t fault the Cabinet Coating Image to much. After all, Benjamin Moore made the video possible and they are not Auto Paint Company.
