I have challenged myself to activate a SOTA on an upcoming backpacking trip. The only way I'm going to achieve that is MORE CW practice! So tonight we're going to start out talking about how to learn the code and then we'll do some practicing live!

Due to a brain injury at age 4 from the mean golf club of a fellow neighbor kid I grabitated to CW as a Novice at age 17 as a way to get around my stuttering issues that were making me reclusive in sports & high school. 9nce I got my ham ticket all of my grades in s hool started improving and I got on the honor roll the first time ever. I never became part if tbe 35 wpm club, but i got 8nto QRP and 2M/6M weak signal modes. Eventually i lost 90% of my stuttering, but had to drift away for 20 years due to career & boy scout leadership obligations. Now in semi-retirement i had no idea that POTA was un ex8stsnce and am sorry i did not know anout it in 2018 when it was taking the popular fadt track.. Now if I can shake iff the arthritus in the hand and between the ears I may actually bevome proficient at it again!!! Thanks for carrying on tje hobby so us ild guys can come bavk to enjoy it again!!!

TWO Rules of Thumb (IMHO): #1) after getting somewhat comfy with individual letters, stop trying so hard to "copy" each & every character; instead, relax & focus on hearing WORDS, like, the common, everyday ones we use every day & #2) try to break the habit of thinking u have to WRITE everything down; instead, as I've done for decades, simply jot down essentials, like call, name, QTH, etc & try to "head copy"; that was the BIG thing for me, what changed CW to become almost like another language, making it become "music to my ears," as some might say; in short, the best enjoyment, being able to QRQ with just abt anyone, even while chatting with a friend in the shack (& sometimes, even while sorta' watching TV, hi hi); 73 de WA4ELW in TN 🇺🇸 dit dit 😃

Thats a fair tip that! Just like most hams can recognise CQ that classic "dah dit dah dit dah dah dit dah" but won't necessarily know what combination makes up C or Q :)

Learned CW at Coast Guard Radioman school in 81. Though we stopped using it after 94, to this day, still listen and copy it. Even before I retired from the service, I would copy it on my last ship just have bragging rights. When I do it now, wife looks at me and shakes her head, but IMO, it's an art.

@@houseofhamradio I only know a few RMs or TC's that went on to become ham radio operators. I guess when you did it for a living it's not that appealing but I always enjoyed Morse code. It was very heartbreaking to see them sunset it in 94. 73's

#teamreplay here because of NAQP RTTY yesterday. Thanks for the shout out. CW is a journey. I shake my head in awe at the people who have been learning CW for 6 months and they are having rag chews at 25wpm. I've been at this a couple of years and still have trouble. Some days are better than others. I just need to get on the air more. You'll rock the CW in Aug! Slow and steady is the key!

I learned cw for my novice in 1974. At the time I went for my Extra 20 wpm code was still required. Increased my copy speed by listening to 35 wpm cassette tape. Then 30 wpm, 25 wpm, 20 wpm. Included 15 wpm. Increased my copy speed terrmendously. All I did was listen. Not write or think. Listen, listen, listen. Aced Extra 20 wpm code test. Theory is more challenging for me.

CW IS the very best mode! Best way of learning is by starting with listening to the easiest letters and then grow from there. LA1HHA teach this in a very good way on his channel!

i have 1 additional app that was not mentioned that is very useful i have this on my iphone not sure if it's on android but i know it's on iphone if you use iphone on a daily basis it's called CW Keyboard it's an extension for the keyboard that basically turns your phone's keyboard into a CW keyer although it's straight key but you'll get the idea you can use it on any single app that uses a keyboard anything from messaging to website entry to website or app login anything that normally brings up your phone's keyboard you can use the CW Keyboard app and do CW right on the phone i even used it to send a text to my boss saying i'll be 30 minutes late big accident on the highway standstill traffic 3 miles from the exit that i needed to get off on so that's another app for you

Out of curiosity, how are you at doing those pattern recognition questions like they have on iq tests? You know the ones that have a string of cryptic looking patterns, then ask you to select the next pattern from a multiple choice list? I suck at those and have also been unable to learn cw.

Well done Josh. pretty sage advice during this live stream. I applaud you doing CW while live streaming. Brave soul. Stick with it and keep doing on air and you will improve. I would work on your Instant Character Recognition and find out which characters give you trouble and you will feel it much more easily. I know I come across as an expert but I am really just a practicing student of CW. For the most part, I hung up the mic a year ago to really focus on CW and I must say it is honestly my favorite mode. 73 Bob WV7W

Morse Toad doesn't seem to be available for the latest version of Android. Same seems to be true of Morse Machine as well. Now I wish I hadn't upgraded my version of Android recently.

Morse Toad is not available for my device. It is too old of a program. I can download it to my Google Nexus 5 though. That was only 4 phones ago. Morse Machine has been updated slightly. I can download that on to my Google Nexus 6P which was three phones ago. So my Samsung S9+ and my Samsung S22Ultra will not run these the apps are too old. I've seen these recommended before but these are bad recommendations. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I would suggest MorseMania in the future. Also if you have an Android Phone you can install FT8CN to do FT8 with a phone on the hike you are doing. I think you have iOS so...no way of side loading apps.

And yes I do have all my old phones. I have the nexi phones rooted now and will be for...umm...fun hacking stuff. S9+ I use for another camera and my drone. Now if I can only find uses for my old Palm Treo or my Blackberry other than sitting in my phone museum.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Josh, you need to commit to a minimum of 30-60 minutes of practice per day. The ARRL code transmissions can be helpful. Just slow it down and worry about your accuracy at this point. If someone is too fast for you, just send ? until they slow it down or go away! :) Also, do some POTA activations with ONLY CW. You'll be well on your way. Keep on plugging away!

I also watch/listen to K4SWL with QRZcom app up compare the result with a match of the state I hear to see if I copied it correctly. I have gotten better and better this way. At first I needed a few listens and now I get it mostly the first time. It’s like a Morse runner but with partial callsigns and question marks needs to hear the parts lost to QSB or pileups.
