Learn Arabic - Arabic Grammar for Understanding the Quran
Knowledge of Arabic grammar is both a core prerequisite and an invaluable asset for the serious student of knowledge. Unfortunately, for the majority of Muslims living the West today, obtaining a working knowledge of Arabic grammar seems virtually impossible.
The greatest barrier between us and a mastery of Arabic grammar is the widespread notion that Arabic grammar is irresolvably complex, that it is too detailed, too vast, and too technical. We believe that learning Arabic grammar takes way too long to do, that we will burn out long before we begin reaping its fruits. We further believe Arabic grammar is "all or nothing"--that it's useless unless we learn ALL of it. And it's impossible to learn ALL of it. So we don't bother to start; we decide it's not worth learning ANY of it.
These notions are self-imposed psychological shackles OR unpleasant encounters we've had when we tried to learn Arabic before OR the whispers of the sneaky one, Shaytaan (or all of the above). But at the end of the day, our reality is one: we have deprived ourselves of the key for unlocking a deeper, more intimate relationship with the Quran (and Sunnah) and thus, denied ourselves the opportunity of tasting the full sweetness of divine knowledge.
As for the misconceptions:
(1) Arabic grammar is indeed "complex", but let's be real: everything about the human existence is complex. Life is complex. Think about driving a car and our daily responses to an infinite number of possible occurrences on the road. Because we are so FAMILIAR with driving, much of the required thinking is automated or "reflexive". Complexity is not synonymous with difficulty. Why can't Arabic grammar come as naturally as driving does? It can. We have all earned degrees in engineering, medicine, literature, history, education, accounting, etc. If we can master these complex subjects, why can't we learn Arabic grammar? We can.
(2) Like any discipline, the study of Arabic grammar can be a lifelong pursuit, but there's no rule saying, "Once you start to learn Arabic, you cannot stop until you've mastered it". You don't need to be a grammarian to possess a working, intermediate-level understanding of Arabic grammar. We also forget that the fruits of Arabic grammar can be reaped IMMEDIATELY, from day #1, lesson #1.
(3) Arabic grammar is NOT "all or nothing". Like mentioned above, even knowledge of a few simple, isolated rules will permanently strengthen our relationship with the Quran.
Aware of the above concerns, I made this video series (Arabic Grammar for Understanding the Quran) for anyone who wants to learn Arabic. The following are my objectives:
(1) Presenting a "complex" subject in a simple, intuitive way. My goal is to maintain clarity both in the descriptions and in the visuals used.
(2) Shrinking 2.5 years of Arabic grammar content into 20 short videos, each lasting between 30-45 minutes (for a grand total of no more than 15 hours), insha'Allah. This requires a massive condensing of material as well as an omission of a few concepts.
(3) Demonstrating the relevance of grammar and the real-life application of grammar rules ("theory") to understanding the Quran ("practice"). Thus, every single lesson will feature step-by-step grammatical analyses of Quranic verses.
Please subscribe to my channel, and provide me with feedback for this project, insha'Allah. I pray that Allah SWT accepts our intentions and efforts. Ameen.

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuh! Jazakallah Khairan for your dua. May Allah (SWT) increase you in knowledge and elevate your status in this life and in the hereafter. Ameen. I am a mere student. I am not a grammarian, nor am I scholar; with these videos, I am simply trying my best to pass on what little I have learned in a clear, organized way to others.

@@me_ali786 Assalamualikum brother, I hope you are still in the path of gaining Allah's knowledge. From experience, it is best for you to start learning. 1. Quranic Arabic : I am providing a link which has videos of brother Asif teaching Arabic grammar. It also has all the necessary books and handouts to go along with the video. If you study from this man you won't regret a single moment. He teaches with a lot of compassion and he understands the students and does 90% of your job of learning. Even the effort you have to put for revision is minimal. I can't explain to you it in words. I hope you will try and see it for yourself. download-islamic-book.blogspot.com/2014/03/madina-arabic-books.html?m=0 2. Try listening to news (Like Al Jazeera) to improve your Fusa Arabic / MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) which is the Formal Arabic. 3. Then choosing any dialect : Every Arabic country has its own dialect. If you have friends or if you are in an Arabic country use it to your advantage. Advice: Brother I will remind you that Allah will test a lot in the journey in many ways. Overcome it and move forward and you we'll see it reap benefits. Jazakallah khairan.

READ ME! READ ME! BENEFITS AWAIT YOU~~~ 5 Examples of the Uniqueness of Quran Arabic- and Why Translations Are Not Enough Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim. Reading translations of the Quran does help a lot in understanding its meaning, but the unquestionable fact is that translations are simply not enough. They touch only the surface of a vast ocean of meanings. You miss out on a lot of what Allah (swt) is saying to you. You get the feeling that something’s missing, and what’s missing is the power, the miracle that the Quran imparts only to those knowledgeable in Quranic Arabic. If we don’t know Arabic, we don’t really understand what that thing is which is missing. Here are a few examples of disparity between Quran and its translations. Al-Iltifaat Al-iltifat a sudden change in the pronoun of the speaker or the one spoken to. There are some iltifat that cannot be conveyed using English translation. Here is an example: وَالْعَصْرِ . إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ . إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ By time, Indeed, mankind (al-insan) is in loss, Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience. (103:1-3) The word al-Insan is singular, denoting that every single human being is individually in loss. But when it comes to extricating oneself out of that loss, we need the help of others and be a unified community. So in the third ayah all the verbs are plural. This is impossible to grasp in translation. Difference between a noun and a verb In Arabic as well as in English, a noun denotes stability, permanence, while a verb represents action. There are some uses of nouns in the Quran whose translation into English will be cumbersome, and so they are translated as verbs. وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally (khalidun).” (2:39) A better translation of the word khalidun would be the eternal abiders. The opposite is also true. وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ And [mention] when We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam”; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant (istakabra) and became of the disbelievers. (2:34) This word is probably not translatable into English. The correct Arabic for was arrogant would be kaana mustakbirun. Dual and Plural Apart from the singular and the plural, Arabic has an extra number - the dual. It is especially difficult in English to distinguish between dual and plural pronouns and verbs, especially they change rapidly in a sentence: فَأَزَلَّهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا مِمَّا كَانَا فِيهِ ۖ وَقُلْنَا اهْبِطُوا بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ وَلَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمَتَاعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ But Shaytan caused them [dual] to slip out of it and removed them [dual] from that [condition] in which they [dual] had been. And We said, “Go down, [plural], as enemies to one another, and you [plural] will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time.” (2:36) Shaytan instigated two people, Adam and Hawa (as) to eat from the forbidden tree, and so the dual form is used. But when Allah orders them to go down, He includes more people than Adam and Hawa (as), probably including shaytan. So the plural form is used. Order of the parts of a sentence In English, the sentence structure is more or less fixed - the subject comes first, then the verb, and finally the object. But Arabic is more flexible regarding this. For example, in surah al-Fatihah, Allah (swt) says: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ All the praises and thanks be to Allah…. (1:1) But elsewhere He says: فَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ So all the praises and thanks are to Allah…. (45:36) In the first ayah, al-hamd comes in the beginning, but in the second ayah the order is changed. This is done do denote exclusivity or to draw attention. ‘Aqil and Ghayr ‘Aqil plurals In Arabic, the plurals for an ‘aqil (something that has an ‘aql or intellect, such as human beings and jinns) are different from those for ghayr ‘aqil. Look at the pronouns in the following ayah: وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنبِئُونِي بِأَسْمَاءِ هَٰؤُلَاءِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ And He taught Adam the names - all of them [ghayr ‘aqil]. Then He showed them [‘aqil] to the angels and said, “Inform Me of the names of these [‘aqil], if you are truthful.” (2:31) It is impossible to distinguish between the “them”s and “these”s. The pronoun in “all of them” refers back to the names, and names are of course ghayr ‘aqil. But then Allah says He showed “them” to the angels, and the pronoun He uses is ‘aqil. That means that when Allah showed this group of stuff to the angels, some humans or jinns or angels were included in the group. These examples show the importance of learning Quranic Arabic. If the remaining videos are produced as I intended, insha'Allah, I would hope that the viewer would be able to understand, or at least be familiar with, ~50-70% of the grammar of the Quran after completing the series. This also depends on the student's knowledge of Quranic vocabulary, which I do not focus on.

Barakallahu feekum. You're right: using "mu'arraf" and "ghair mu'arraf" would probably have been more accurate. But "ma'rifah" isn't incorrect. In everyday language, it means knowledge and learning, but in nawhu, as an istilaaH (technical term), it means definite noun.

The grammar of the Quran can be "straightforward" in some places, but tricky/convoluted in others. In my careful selection of topics for the 20 videos, I have given priority to grammar/morphology rules that 1) appear frequently in the Quran, and 2) are relevant to the average Muslim.

If somebody asks me what will make the muslims in the world prosper in life and the hereafter. I would say "Quranic Arabic" should be taught to every muslim in the world. This will make them understand the Holy Quran and Hadiths of Muhammed (SAW). True guidance is sought through proper understanding of the above. Muslims are muslims for name sake. I'm myself a student of ARabic language and I feel honored learning the Language of Jannah. May we all pray and ask Allah's help for learning the same

That was your very interesting article, here are a few more tips on how to learn Arabic… Set realistic goals, don’t just dive in and say “I want to be fluent Arabic within 1 year”, give yourself short term goals which lead up to long term goals. E.g. Short Term Goal = “I want to learn all about this topic in 1 month” and Long Term Goal = “I aim to be able to speak about at least 12 topics within the next year. Make time, you will need to set some time aside, preferably on a daily basis, so you can achieve your goal. I highly recommend blocking out actual time on your calendar every day and really commit to this. Think of it as an appointment with your doctor that you wouldn’t consider missing. That is exactly how you should treat this task. As little as 20 minutes a day is a great start. Immerse yourself in the language, meet Arabic speaking friends, listen to the radio, watch a show on TV, and try to read the newspaper. Even if you do not 100% understand the content, keep it as a daily exercise and you will eventually make sense of it all. The other great news is this listening exercise is the only way to improve your accent. Your brain will process all the information and you will notice the improvement with time. Have a practice buddy, keep yourself motivated and accountable by practicing Arabic with a friend. It is always a good strategy to practice the language with someone who is fluent and non-judgmental. I have a friend who practices Arabic with me and I practice English with her. (I discovered about these and more on Mirykal lingo guide site )
