I really like dancing and I am trying to apply for a dance school and I'm trying to brush up on some ballet terms and such. I just discovered your channel and it is very helpful. I realized I am a visual learner. But I was wondering if your could do a video where u show terminology and show the action for things such as Adage work and such. Also dance school auditions and a video about shoes I'm so confused.

You are awesome! Just wanted to say that. How many people would actually give me the chance to try out what they've said? None. They would say "and now try it" but tbh I'm to lazy to do this, so when you actually gave examples, I was just like "wow". I have no words to describe how wonderful you are. Keep going, I would TOTALLY be crying without your videos. Love from Germany xx

@@lina-j1s9c you got this! I’m nearly 4 years in and I have to say, it takes practice. Learning the musicality of it took me forever, especially to figure out the cues (counting the counts of music in the car helps). It becomes muscle memory after awhile. Technique is tough stuff though! I see why professionals practice their whole lives. But what’s important is to just have fun with it!! It is so fun (and frustrating some days, but it’s a challenge and that’s also fun!).

I started dancing, jazz and ballet, in my late 20s and it always blows my mind what a different part of the brain it uses. I wrote a 10,000 word dissertation for my degree but I find remembering 90s of dance steps soooo tough! Incredible how the mind works - each class you see the huge difference between the two skills. Thanks for this vid - super helpful! Loving the channel!

Thank you Katherine for sharing this valuable insight! This video helped me not only as a student but as a teacher. As a student, I have always learned better audibly rather than visually. Now I realize how much this has translated into my teacher--I tend to teach more audible than visual. Now, all of a sudden, I can see a lot more clearly why those who tend to learn more visually are slower to pick up my combinations and choreography than the audible learners. I hope you realize how talented you are as a teacher. I really believe that you could become one of the best Master Teachers of your generation. Thanks!

Hi there I have a tip that I know works for me but I'm not sure about others. So you have to look for patterns right? But this is different kinds of patterns. With this, for example that many most likely have done at least once: facing the barre degajes(or tendu jetes), 8 with the right, 8 with the left, 4 with the right, 4 with the left, 2 to the right, 2 to the left, 1 right left right left. It's kinda like searching for different smaller patterns. Pleas let me know if you understood/ do this! :)

Thank you so much for the audio vs visual learning test! I always thought I was a visual learner. However, I was able to repeat the spoken combination perfectly to the music, but when I music started for the visually taught combo, I was lost! As a side note, I read several comments from people saying they're mostly kinesthetic learners. I think that's kind of obvious; dancers are kinesthetic learners by default!

I've been trying to figure out how I learn combinations and choreography best and it seems like when I hear the combination I actually register it more. The problem with that is that my main ballet teacher thinks to remember a combination you must follow along with the teacher. He thinks it is disrespectful to just stand there and watch. One day they did not have time to get a substitute teacher for the level 4 and 5 class (There are 6 levels; pre tech, tech 1, tech 2, tech 3, tech 4, and tech 5. I am in tech 3.) so of course there were a lot of people in class and when he was demonstrating I was kind of watching but mostly listening and all of a sudden he stopped and looked at me and said, "Don't just stand there, follow along!" (I could tell he was trying to say it nicely. He has a Russian accent by the way.) I got kind of annoyed and started to follow along limply. Thank you for the video!

There's a huge difference between standing and staring, and actively learning the combination. Try marking with your hands, it works great for engaging your motor neurons which is a tremendous boost in memory, while you get to watch the pattern, (AND it demonstrates to your instructor that you are actively engaged in learning. It should be feasable that you can explain to your teacher that you need to see it to learn. Otherwise you are distracted by trying to anticipate his next movement. Muti-tasking is a myth.

I just learned that I am a complete visual learner. Now I really get why my combination memorisation is so inconsistent, it's because we get different teachers, some like to show the routine and whilst most actually don't. Looks like I have to actually do it while she recites so I can get some kind of visual for myself.

So she has a lightness yet a regal-ness to her. I would work on relevees to build up strength rolling through as well. Let me know how it goes!

Thank you so much for your advice! I would absolutely love if you did variation videos, and I will definitely be applying your tips! I've watched your pointe work and foot strength videos, but are there any specific exercises you would recommend to help build up strength to roll through my shoes?

Hi Kathryn! I was just wondering if you could do an all about arabesque video. Flexibility, strength, proper form, etc. That would be really great if you could!

I am definitely an audible learner!!! Thank you for doing this! I do have one question; what about marking with hands? I know I just automatically start doing the combination with my hands. Do you think that could be distracting like marking with the legs?
@kathryn_morgan
@kathryn_morgan 10 лет назад
Not at all! I should have said that. What I meant was that many people STARE at themselves in the mirror while the teacher is giving the combination. You can absolutely mark just- watch the teacher! :)

Just a random question. How do you ever learn the steps to some of those Balanchine ballets with music by Stravinsky such as Agon? The music seems so difficult to dance to. I have always been curious about this. I love those ballets by the way, I think it would take me 20 years to learn them lol!

What a great video with tons of really good tips! Can't wait to practice these. I took class yesterday and really focused on concentration like you mentioned in your learning combinations video and it really, really helped, especially for tricky and fast combinations! I always thought I was a visual learner (because I'm a visual arts person) but oddly enough, I turned out to be an audible learner! ps. I would love it if you could highlight on your blog (or video) your ballet dvd/videos library and even your favorite versions of the classics. I thought it would be interesting to see your own "favorites of all time" for ballets like Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Swan Lake, etc...

Great video! One suggestion: it would help if the visual learning exercise were shot from behind. We are usually behind the teacher when we learn a combination. It is much more difficult for me to learn when I also have to reverse everything (mirror image). Also: the usual expression is "auditory learner," not "audible learner."

I'm actually a kinesthetic learner when it comes to learning combinations. I need to do the combination with my teacher to get it into my muscle memory, if I don't I have no idea what I'm doing. Here's the link if you don't know what kinesthetic learning is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinesthetic_learning

I’m not super visual I guess! I had a harder time with the visual, the music and counts and hearing the verbal steps and repeating them myself help me the most. The audial one was surprisingly a lot easier, even if I didn’t see the combination at all! That really did help me figure out which one I am!

Merciful hour! I am a choral singer and I love having a score in front of me. I will end up knowing the piece intuitively; notes, dynamics, rhythm etc but could not manage a vast repetoire of choral work without scores. Dancers are amazing that they can manage without this. Is there any way ballets can be notated or is it all past down the years from person to person without any hard copy record?

So I have lots of questions haha. Here we go; 1: how do you deal with having off days? (Bad turning days, period days, days where you have the teacher you don't like etc.) 2: what do you about pointe shoes that die really fast (I.e. How do you preserve them?) 3. How do you deal with having a studio that isn't professional enough (not serious training)? My parents don't what me to move away for another year but I feel like I'm losing valuable and important time. 4. What do you think of ballet competitions as a way to get noticed and get into good schools? (Yagp especially) 5.what do you do about non dance friends who don't understand why you're always busy and can't hang out with them? 6. Where can I get both a professional quality dance education and a high quality school experience? I know you can't answer all if these but I thought I would throw them out there. Thanks so much for this video! It's super helpful!

loved your video, I've always had trouble remembering combinations, it's so tricky even after years of practising... well maybe I've always thought I have a shallow memory and relied on my classmates in case I missed out on a step (I know, cheating). Thanks for this, I am probably more visual than audio and sometimes I need to try one or two things shown kinesthetically (musle memory, I am really good at immitating movement, so this helps). A kind request: I could really use tips on pointe bourrees (not as much posture but more of technique on pointe to do really quick and strong bourrees without them seeming like lunging in the pointe shoe, possible metatarsal movent in the shoe and so forth). Cheers!
@zourdoudaki
@zourdoudaki 9 лет назад
and by bourrees I mean the pas de bourrée couru en cinquième (or suivi for the Vaganova fans). Also by metatarsal movement I mean that it's not a simple sequence of pointed feet going up and down, right? Isn't there a release-pointe movement within the pointe shoe? And if so, in what sequence? Thanks again!

i am an audible learner, which is kind of bad many teachers just do the combination without talking much so i have to add a voiceover in my head. i love the music at the start what is it? thank you for the video!!

It is actually me playing the piano. I use all of my play ballet class music which I have used in all of the barre workouts so far. So it is an excerpt from that! :)
