Ever thought of playing bebop guitar but didn't know where and how to start? Bebop music is exciting, versatile and fun to play on the guitar but learning bebop theories and scales can be very difficult and honestly, quite overwhelming. In this video, I will share to you my story how I learned the bebop language, so you can too!

100% agree! I've started on exactly this. Over the past 6 months I've learned Alice, Yardbird, Oleo, and Billies Bounce heads by ear and it's been the key to a transformation in my playing. Excellent advice!

It's fantastic 70+ years later we are still learning from Charlie Parker. His heads were amazing and his solos mind blowing!

Excellent advice! The bebop heads from the masters. I would add some lessons like Grant Greens solo on Cool Blues!

Melodies are the most important element of the musical language. Individual notes are the like the letters in this language, arpeggio and scale fragments are like the words. I miss studying with you and your program, I hope to return in the near future, you offer a great value in Jazz guitar instruction.

What a fantastic piece of advice this is. Getting the head 100% right may not always be the easiest task (of course its easy for u Marc :-) ) but your examples like Freight trane (which i rate in my top 5 of all bebop... i have a 100 top 5s BTW) and Anthropology are perfect .. May I also suggest Blues for Alice, relaxing at Camarillo. I wish there was a guitar tablature for the Omnibook coz i am not great at reading music. 😞. Thank you Marc.

Interesting a friend of mine asked Joe Pass what he should learn to become a better Jazz soloist and he said learn the melodies to all the tunes.

Good one! My challenge is coming up with cohesive approaches to measures with two chords. Even if the tempo is reasonable, I can't get the flow to work. Thoughts?
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 2 года назад
Got it -- the easiest way is to simplify to only using the V chord. For instance on Abm7 to Db7 (in the same bar), simply think of Db7

@@jazzguitar Cool! That certainly frees up the space. I have been working over the arpeggios on the 2-5 for along time, and nothing really sounded good. 🥸

Do you also recommend analyzing the harmony, or should it be just listening to the melody, and trying to absorb it?

Well both, of course :)
