Can you please record a real dialogue ? Like for order food in a restaurant, how people actually interact? I think that would actually help better for us to learn, and practice. Your videos introduced some new phrases, and vocabularies. Those are great, but I don't know how to start the conversation just by these phrases or vocabularies. Thank you. Please keep the good work ☺️

@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 7 лет назад
Welcome, and that's great motivation for your Cantonese learning, you're so kind! :) In Cantonese, you can say 而家可以過馬路啦 (ji4 gaa1 ho2 ji3 gwo3 maa5 lou6 laa3) for "now you can cross (time-wise)", or 呢度過馬路安全 (ni1 dou6 gwo3 maa5 lou6 on1 cyun4) for "it's safe to cross the street here" (location-wise).

😄 thanks alot... And how about "don't stand while the bus is moving" Some old people who don't have helper when they go or went to market they carry so many things and sometimes heavy trolley. It's dangerous for them to stand up and wait to get off . Thank you again for your hardwork💪👌
@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 7 лет назад
You're right, I see that a lot too. In this case you can tell them, 巴士郁緊,唔好企起身住 (baa1 si2 juk1 gan2, m4 hou2 kei2 hei2 san1 zyu6 ), literally "the bus is moving, don't stand up yet."
@rosemelitadoadison3514

@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 7 лет назад
Haha.. that actually works too, m4 hou2 hei2 san1 "don't stand up", but yeah, it might sound slightly impolite. You can add zyu6 at the end to make it sound less forceful: m4 hou2 hei2 san1 zyu6 "don't stand up yet"

@CantoneseClass101

The simplify/traditional applies to the characters, meaning that we only distinguish them when we write, not when we speak. So the simplified characters are used in mainland China, while traditional characters are used in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Please slow down and less English explanation. The subtitle translation is enough. When we slow down playback speed, we also have to listen through all of the English explanations which takes way more time than the Cantonese. Otherwise, your videos are very helpful! If you can repeat the cantonese phrases 3x each, slow speed 1x. very slow speed 1x, then normal speed 1x. Then repeat special vocabulary 1-3x. And leave the Cantonese pinyin/characters on screen in big font for whole time. If you can also provide text file with all the vocabulary that will be very helpful too! Thank you!

nice content but I though it would be nice it you repeat the cantonese words a few more times, I also thought when you read English it's a little bit redundant since it's already subtitled.

I think Cantonese is beautiful... however I don't think I will ever try to learn Cantonese or even Mandarin. As an American... it just does not make any bit of sense that tone of voice can change a words meaning. I am learning Korean ( Both the language and reading, writing.) Korean is nowhere near as difficult as Chiense or Japanese or Cantonese though. I just don't think I could ever "accept" the tonal system. It just will never register in my brain as being "ok". I just feel like it is stupid but I know it is just a differnt culture/system of language. Anyway the language is beautiful.... I love the sounds..... not quite as much as I LOVE Korean but I like it in the same way. Like I mean it sounds pleasant to the ears like Korean does to me, but Korean wins because it is the most pleasant and beautiful language in the world.

@CantoneseClass101 6 лет назад
Thank you for your comment! You're right, tonal languages aren't for everyone, and they are challenging. The good news is, some Korean words sound similar to their Mandarin or Cantonese equivalence (after all, they came from the same language family from way back when). So you might be surprised that you already know some Mandarin or Cantonese words ;) (I'm surprised to find that there are many YT videos talking about their similarities) Keep up with your good work in Korean study! And hope you've already subscribed to our Korean channel ru-vid.com p.s. Thanks for the compliment! Growing up I never realized Asian females are actually kinda popular among White or Hispanic males. That's a pleasant surprise ^^"

Yeah I think it's something like 60% of basic Korean is from the Chinese. I think Japanese is a similar percent also. I might want to learn Cantonese next, after I am fully fluent in Korean but it is daunting for sure. I love the traditional characters. (Though impossible to write lol) They contain much more culture than the simplified characters. The sounds of the language isn't the daunting part. It is the Tones and thousands of characters that is so scary to me. I want to go to HongKong at some point though , so I want to learn after Korean. I was not subscribed to the Korean one , but I will do so now!. I need all the help I can get. Although I consider myself intermediate in Korean, I still need all the help I can get. And no problom
@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 6 лет назад
Thanks for the subscribe! :) All the best! And hopefully after Korean, you'll start learning Cantonese ;) You're right, the traditional characters contain much more culture despite they look impossible, (some even said that it's like a painting), but once you've started decoding them, it's just like an advanced version of Hangul, a combination of parts in a character. Take your time! And hope you get to come to Hong Kong some day, you don't need to know the characters to be able to speak Cantonese :D

Great video, but one comment.. it is better to use "batroom" word i.s.o. "toilet" in Cantonese ;)
@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 7 лет назад
That's right, "bathroom" in Cantonese is 洗手間 (sai2 sau2 gaan1), and "toilet" is 廁所 (ci3 so2). In most case, HK people understand the English "toilet". Personally I'd prefer to say 洗手間 (sai2 sau2 gaan1) instead of 廁所 (ci3 so2) because I'm a lady. ^^"

why always put number on the alphabet
@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 6 лет назад
The numbers behind the romanization are tones. Since the same pronunciation in different tones has different meanings, that's an essential part of Cantonese language. :) To learn more about Cantonese tones, check out our other video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XmmktTDoS04.htmlm18s And for more in-depth explanations, check out this lesson on our site! www.cantoneseclass101.com/2015/11/06/ultimate-cantonese-pronunciation-guide-8-cantonese-tones/

Why are there numbers in the words? Makes it even more confusing. 😱😩
@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 7 лет назад
The numbers behind the romanization are tones, since the same pronunciation in different tones have different meanings, that's an essential part of Cantonese language. :) For example, maa1 is "mother," and maa5 is "horse"; you don't want to mix them up!
