@user-jn1px7rp3h
@user-jn1px7rp3h 4 года назад
1) Don't think, just listen - You can't understand 2 conversations at once. 2) Ask questions - Engage to be engaged. 3) Home Practice - a. No subtitles b. 2-3 sentences c. 10x - for beginners/ 3x d. Then play sub e. Write down sentences you hear to know what you're missing and then practice what you've missed. 4) Close your eyes and listen. a. It will make easier to listen for you, because when you lose one sense (vision in our case), another one's getting better(hearing). 5) Order to watch movies: a. For kids b. Stupid comedy c. Action Movies d. Drama e. Dark comedy

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!

These tips are very useful teacher, it took me a lot of time to understand spoken English (and I still struggle sometimes) because I didn't get enough exposure to spoken English as a beginner so if I could change anything I did when I just started learning English would be to listen more but sometimes bad listening skills are often linked to a limited vocabulary at least in my experience.

Cesar Zvala Yup, things out of context are incredibly tough. As a freelancer, I have to deal a lot with the Government via phone, where it's all a series of passwords, names, data, addresses, etc. Since they're all random and have no connection to each other is a pain in the ass for me to know if they want me to go to Leicester Square Gardens or Lewster Mare Gardens.

James, thanks for the video, seriously, I'm taking classes for C1 and a few weeks ago I realized about this first issue you mentioned, I was controlling all that I was saying, something that I don't do when I speak in my native language. Since then, I'm allowing myself to flow, resulting in an improvement of my conversations because I think about what I want to say next, instead of monitoring everything. We can say it's less self-centered now xD But, jokes aside, seeing your video confirmed my suspicions, what a relief, man... you got a new subscriber

I switched off subtitles and i can understand every word you say. But your speaking are very clear and accentuated. Something you can't say about majority of native english speakers. In reality you have much tougher challenge to understand some people speaking.)

James, English is the 2nd language for me and I have learnt it in school of higer education for 5 years. I have always had problems with listening and understanding (I'm sure you know this type of people :) But I watched this video of yours and understood every single word even when you spoke fleuntly. By the way the advices are good. I liked the 2nd one mostly. Just thank you. By the way, I have not found a video about difference between "between" and "among". Could you give your ideas about this as a person who lives among native speakers. Is "between" really about choice between two things or some several things (but definite)?

Really, you are a great teacher, I like your way of teaching us the language, it is interesting with jokes. One of the problems having foreign English learners is lack of good teacher. Since 1995 I have been studying English in somehow ( Primary school, High school even the first degree of my university) but still I am struggling with it. Dear teacher James, what is wrong with me? . Thanks Abdiaziz Somalia

Yo guys I have another really good trick! I always listen to advanced rappers like Witt Lowry or Logic. Im from germany and 15 (so sorry for my bad english :) I decided to understand what they're saying so I can rap with 'em or just get the feel from the song, you know what I mean... :D So I opened the Lyrics page (didnt look at the lyrics doe) and took out a sheet of paper. I played the music and stopped it every hmm I think 30 Seconds and wrote down what I remembered and understood, word for word and after that I compared it to the Lyrics. There were really much Words I dont even knew and I learned so much from it, how to spell them, how to write them, I mean today I can almost understand everything and Im the best in my class so I think it works :D As you can see I'm still a noob when it comes to write a text (mostly bc of the tenses) but i wont give up learning never been one for past tenses so know that im moving forward before i finish this sentence :p

How many time did you practice listening. It just because you need more listening. It's called silent period. It takes about 1200 hours until your brain starts to make up the words instantly (will come out on your mouth) and automaticly according the ideas you want to express. But don worry, you are in the right way, carry on, and you will see better results :)

Hey Robert, Here's a nice clue for improve your listening. A pronunciation teacher gave it to me. Watch one video from the caracter cookie monster (Sesame Street series) you will notice that he just use the words which are necessary to understand the whole sentence. So, thinking of that at the time you are listening pay atention to that main words only, and then, you will get the information.
