My dads side is Portuguese and I absolutely love the language.. only problem is I don’t speak it. And he had passed and my grand parents are long gone. One of my life’s goals is so learn Portuguese fluently.

Yeah I love drops! I used it a lot over this past summer and it has helped with vocabulary but I'm on this video for grammar focused apps that include European Portuguese and not only just Brazilian Portuguese, unlike Duolingo.

First of all, I like you and admire you because you have shown not only to me but to the rest of the world that anything in life is possible with dedication and perseverance ( the video which I watched about your story made me say all those words 🙂🙂). Also, thanks for mentioning the list of apps that are aimed to teach European Portuguese. I've been using Duolingo to learn Portuguese for two years now and I am still considering going to Portugal to study more about the Portuguese Language. Yeah, Duolingo is kind of weird. It teaches American English and Brazilian Portuguese :/ I was annoyed because I prefer to learn where the language originated from such as French from France instead of Québec :)
I've looked at all of those, they might be good as a back-up to actual lessons, but they don't actually teach the language. And having got to B1 they're too basic.. I've used DL, and completed it - I get on well with the style and wish they did do European Portuguese, but they don't. I've also used Babbel, which was good at a basic level and although I had to pay for it, it only cost me £17 (I completed the basic level in 3 months). Sadly their intermediate level is more difficult. Again i is primarily Brazilian, but at least they do tell you when its different. So now I just watch videos, and am glad to learn pronunciation from you - which is fine, because I've already got the structure.
Olá Liz, I love Speak & Translate. First and foremost it has European Portuguese. Then you can choose your native language and you can choose to talk or type out the word(s) or phrases you want to translate. It will then type out the translation and then you can also listen to it, in a male or female voice AND you can slow it down and speed it up. And as bonus, all your translations are kept. You have to scroll up, but they are there! To me the best part is if I have a Portuguese word or phrase I’ve heard, I can repeat it and the app will transcribe it back to English. It’s helped me practice my phrases and translation ! Take care, obrigada.
I downloaded the lyrics training... and i LOVE it . I generally listen to Portuguese songs... Era uma vez and menina solta are my fav! I did buy the drops app and now using the free version. Its good, but the words are very mechanical and some are wrong. And I also use Linguee!
I am a first generation American of Portuguese descent and took 4 years of Portuguese in high school. I’m merely conversational and my goal is to become fluent because I may want to get my dual citizenship to live in Portugal. Thank you for these options! All I’ve been able to find has been Brazilian Portuguese.
My husband is portuguese. Been together 15 years and have always wanted to learn(just to shy to try) He is trying to teach our children(should have from day one but it is what it is). Me and my son downloaded memrise. I also have duolingo. I know its different and have learned some differences. But i do have my husband to tell me what they are unlike others. The thing is the apps that I have that teach eu portuguese go about in a way that doesn't stick with us. Unfortunately the way duolingo is it was so easy to grasp not only words but how to use them in different ways. It's more repetitive and making you use the words over and over in different sentences. Its quite disappointing the one app that makes it easy is not eu portuguese. I'm going to check out the other apps you mentioned. Another thing I have learned from my husband is that depending where in portugal you are from depends on some words you use or ways you say them. I just don't want to regret never being able to speak to my father in law without a interpreter or my kids growing up not knowing their roots.
My great, great grandparents were Portuguese from Madeira. I would like to learn the language and familiarise my self with the culture. They immigrated to Saint Vincent in the Caribbean and married the locals so the language got lost. No one in my fathers family can speak it.

Exactly, the amount of app that I tried in the app store and saw that so many where Brazilian Portuguese. I use Drops, and feel that it give me the motivation to do it everyday. I definitely stick with the free version. Love the idea of the lyrics training. Find that I remember song better even in different languages. Thank you for that suggestion

Can you do one vídeo only about portuguese music, i think that if a person listens to the music and gets passionate about it, it Would be easier to learn the language and help with the pronounciation
Bom dia! Tenho assistido aos seus vídeos e acho-os muito bons e completos! Parabéns, inclusive por estar a divulgar a nossa querida língua e cultura! Só por curiosidade: sabia que em Portugal existe uma segunda língua (não dialecto!) oficial: o Mirandês e não é totalmente compreensível para um Português? Se tiver essa curiosidade veja pessoas a falar neste idioma, apercebendo-se das diferenças. É uma língua falada apenas no norte de Portugal e muito parecida com o leonês, uma língua da região espanhola que faz fronteira com Portugal e que também tem origens no período medieval quando as populações viviam praticamente isoladas e por isso foram desenvolvendo formas de comunicação muito próprias!
I actually came across Memrise a while back after finding out that Duolingo was only teaching Brazilian Portuguese. My family is from Portugal, so I want to learn the European style of Portuguese. But after having watched Nathaniel Drew and his discussion of these apps, I don't think I'll be using language learning apps that much to help anymore. I'll probably focus on creating my own lists of words that are commonly used (using the 80/20 rule) and learn how to create sentences using those words.
I personally use Drops because it's practically helpful and it understands the right amount of learning, also knowing how huge is the topic it contains for free (except the time), and lastly it can be used offline which is brilliant. Also I'm quite happy that you atleast included it in.
I have used Anki, which is similar to Quizlet but let's you rate how easy the card was too remember rather than just correct and incorrect and then shows you the card on a frequency based on how easy you found it
Thank you soooo much for showing me these apps. Unfortunately I learnt from Duolingo and only after a year I realized that it's not European Portuguese. At least now I can use these apps to retrain. Unfortunately I have to keep on going over and over the things I've learnt and written down, because I'm the only one in the house that is learning Portuguese. I tried to convince my wife and children to learn as my wife is half Portuguese, but unfortunately her dad didn't teach her the language, so she has no real interest in learning it. So I'm out number and have to learn by myself lol

Hi Liz, absolutely love the fact that you're doing your bit to promote 'European' Portuguese. Can you help though - are there any resources (podcasts, lessons whatever) that are big on real natural dialogue? What I mean is two people having good long conversations, unscripted and unrehearsed. My mum was from Lisbon (I'm English too), and my level is such that I now need to be listening constantly to natural Portuguese to improve the 'flow' rather than just the comprehension. Scripted dialogue lacks the fits and starts, the hesitations, the unintended slips that are crucial to natural speech. Hopefully you know somewhere, because I've run out of ideas. In case you're still looking for Portuguese podcasts - I'm a total beginner but I've been listening to Portugueses no Mundo on RTP Play and I like it. From what I understand (this might be wrong because I understand very little!) each episode is an interview with a Portuguese person who lives in another country talking about their experiences.
Shoot, I can't even use Drops without giving them credit card. So I'm not guessing that when you made this video they were good recommendations, but now not so much. This is what I get for watching your vids in the order you made them. Maybe there is a newer video with updated app recommendations?
Hi, can somebody help me? I purchased a Drops 1 year subscription for European Portuguese and I am a bit confused. The pronounciation of many words are very different on Drops and Linguee. For example: apaixonado: Drops: apashnad (both o are silent) Linguee: apashonado assustado: Drops: as-shtad (u and o are silent) Linguee: asushtadu peixe: Drops: peish (e is silent) Linguee: peishe Which pronounciation is correct?
My boyfriend is Portuguese and Duolingo gives me Brazilian one. It's funny sometimes cuz he thinks I spelled things wrong. 🤣🤣🤣🤣And I showed him google translate,and he's like we don't spell like that in Portugal. Funny about different accent too.

If you hear a Portuguese song and want the lyrics written or see them in youtube, I use www.letras.mus.br/. Its brilliant for learning the words or even find new music to listen to. There are also English songs that are translated to Portuguese, so you can use it both ways.
It's incredibly frustrating trying to find a source and an easy, entry level way to learn Portuguese. I don't understand why Brazilian is the standard, when it's not the original form of the language. I get that it's spoken by more people, but it seems almost disrespectful to Portugal. I am just your average romantic who fell in love with fado music and the language when I heard it, so I tried finding an easy way in, without success. What are your thoughts on "Mondly"? If anyone has any experience, please do tell.

@@TalktheStreets I am able to, but it's Brazilian. When I put in "Linguee Portugal Portuguese/European Portuguese" it gives me the translation of those terms in Brazilian 🤦🏻♂️

Already not a fan of quizlet. Just got it and really can't understand the setup. Searched for portuguese and it shows several "sets" but fails to say whether they are european. The app doesn't seem to even attempt to help me get started.

There is very little in Memrise that is free. We moved to Lisbon late last year so I was motivated to learn and since there seemed no alternative, I started subscribing. As mentioned, you learn only words and phrases that seemed to be included for amusement value rather than usefulness. You learn no grammar, there is no discussion of how to adapt for male/female or singular/plural. The pronunciation exercises are often one or two words then they will throw in a whe sentence and when it tells you your attempt was "nor quite right", there is no guidance on what needs changing, nor does it break into smaller pieces. Incredibly frustrating. I think it was €18.99 for three months (I did 6), or €39.99 for a year.
