Pro flutist teaches you how to finger every flute note in the standard range (B0-D4). This comprehensive flute fingering tutorial starts with learning how to read a flute fingering chart. Next, learn each flute fingering in the first octave, second octave, third octave, and a few notes in the fourth octave that complete the standard range of the flute. These are all the flute notes needed to play most solo flute and orchestral repertoire.

I didn’t choose my instrument in school due to financial reasons. I had my moms hand me down clarinet. I liked my clarinet but now in my 30s am learning the flute- my preferred instrument. This lesson is making all the difference in making up for lost time! Thank you❤

I play sax, which doesn't require you to press that key down, so I went through the same thing learning flute. I still leave it out sometimes on E, to avoid getting an E-flat when transitioning to D.

To think I classically trained for many years and didn't realize that the usual A flat pinkie is actually used during the third octave E flat.. Wow. No wonder my third octave E flats always sound less toneful. I hit up this tutorial just to see some of the alternative fourth octave fingerings. Even after 10 years of (early adulthood) training fourth octave A is about as high as I can comfortably go. Now in my late 30's and returning to the flute. Everything after that fourth octave A, my tongue/mouth seems not biologically designed to handle or something. I'm practicing Chopin's no 20 in C minor, and that 8va sequence with the fourth octave D#-B con forza is not happening. I wish! 😂Lance, do you offer any lessons for returning adult students? Thanks!

I keep referring back to this as this is one of the most comprehensive guides on this topic. I keep zooming in to see the correct aperture size of your embouchure and your lip placement on the plate as you go up in the registers. 👍😎(Yesterday). By the way, today I tuned back in to practice and that with a tuner after having tuned my flute. The note pitches that I was hitting was 5 and 6 when I was aiming for the target 3 and 4 for the upper range. I retuned my flute to only have the same thing happened. So, I played your pitches to it and it was registering ( the tuner ) the same range as it was when I played my flute. So, I guess that's just the way it goes. Update: Nevermind the comment just above. I tried a different tuner and all is well now!!!!😊😊😊😊

Hi Lance, great video as always! I have a question, I learned that the fingering for F# in the 3rd octave uses R2 instead of R3. My professor said the sound would be clearer, and I now I’m used to this position for years. Have you heard about it before? Do you think it makes any difference? Thank you!
@LanceSuzuki
@LanceSuzuki 7 месяцев назад
Hi Beatriz! Great question! For 3rd Octave F#, R3 is the standard fingering. However, R2 is the most popular alternate fingering. I often use R2 in orchestral/chamber music settings for tuning/blending purposes. R2 makes the pitch slightly lower and the tone slightly less bright. For sustaining a chord or playing fortissimo, these can be useful qualities. For scales and arpeggios, I will often choose R3. Also, when I want a very pure, crystal tone color, R3 is a good choice. Personally, I would not choose only one fingering to use, but would experiment and figure out how to incorporate both R2 and R3 into your playing. This is not your question, but for others wondering about first and second octave F#s, R2 should NOT be used, except for E-F# trills.

Hi Lance, I didn't know that some flutes have the low B and I have this one music sheet that requires the low B. My flute doesn't have it. Should I play C-natural as an alternative? I did not notice before I bought the music sheet. But then it's uncomfortable to slide to E-flat. 😮‍💨

did you say 3rd octave and 2nd octave were the same fingering but different breath
@LanceSuzuki
@LanceSuzuki Месяц назад
Great question! E through B have same fingerings in 1st/2nd octaves. C and C# have same fingerings in 2nd/3rd octaves. The difference is air speed/compression.
@TechTins_Projects
@TechTins_Projects Месяц назад
@@LanceSuzuki thanks, looking at fingerings I can see that using alternatives to the standard fingerings in 3rd octave that same fingering can be used from C to G in 2nd and 3rd octaves. Or would you advise against the alternative fingerings in the 3rd octave. Fingerings being the same for me might be easier. But maybe that is not wise. Any suggestions are very welcome. It is just that I like the idea of keeping the same fingerings as much as I can. Hope that makes sense. I am learning by ear and will only be using flute for pop and rock music. So maybe I don't need all the registers?? Thanks again.

Got the cecilio $50 flute to try. I can't tell yet if it's a skill issue or craftsmanship but the 3rd octave is not currently possible for me. Even when I get it into that 3rd octave range it feels at least a whole step off of what i'm fingering.

Hi Lance, I just found your channel and you have a really great way of explaining things. I'm a former classically trained clarinetist who hasn't played in years and am teaching myself flute. Something I'm struggling with is air capacity and not being able to go more than a few seconds without a breath (especially with no resistance on the flute) Are there exercises that target lung capacity specifically? And is this something you can talk about in a video? I'm really loving the flute and thanks for your great videos!
