I must say I chuckled at the Faroese version of "Do you have a boyfriend?" What is the story behind "sjeik" becoming the Faroese word for boyfriend? Anyone knows? In Icelandic it is "kærasti".
Such a lovely comment. I never thought about it. When I searched for sjeikur in the dictionaries on Sprotin, both Faroese-Danish and Faroese-English state that sjeikur is spoken language. I assume that at some point in time, there has been the assumption that a sheik is both handsome and rich and therefore a good catch. I recall mamma and both my ommas using the word sjeikur about handsome young men (ahem, me included, of course), and I suppose it just started out as that and eventually developed into what it has become, apparently a special Faroese occurence. It might be worth to mention, that most people say and write sjeikur and not one of the other results that pop up when you reverse search boyfriend or kæreste.
