I watched a couple videos on how colors come up in language and I noticed a couple trends in Finnish and I wanted to share! First of all, colors typically in a language start as black and white, then red, then blue, green, yellow, and brown, and them more nuanced colors like pink, purple, orange, and gray. Seconly, words ending in 'inen' seem to be more bright than ones ending in 'a'/'ä'. Oranssi, violetti, and pinkki are obviously loan words, so that might mean (I think) Finnish was roughly in the middle part of the last stage of introducing colors into the language before widespread communication became available. Also, that probably means that red and blue are used in some cases of meaning orange and purple (if so, that's so cool cause I'm just guessing!), similar to the green~blue~purple~gray spectrum of 青 in Japanese. I think it's so interesting how much you can tell about a language just from very specific points like colors. On another note, I've been wanting to learn Finnish for a while and so far this is a really good playlist to do so! Thank you!
Dear Anna, thank you for your lessons and sharings. I have been studying Finnish for almost three months. Your videos are so helpful and useful for me. I hope one day I learn this language. And I hope one day I will visit northwest Europe (Finland, Norway etc.) and see Northern Lights with my family. I also would love to meet you face to face🥰🎈🕊️. Thank you for your efforts. Greetings from Turkey 🎈❤️🤍💯🕊️
Thank you for these videos! I have a question though. How do I say something is light or dark pink? Would I then use vaaleanpinkki and tummanpinkki? Or can I also use vaaleanvaaleanpunainen and tummanvaaleanpunainen? Or is there yet another way to say this?
The only one I knew beforehand was musta, thanks to Jenni Vartiainen's song Musta Kahvia. Yea, that's how much finns love coffee, they even have songs with black coffee being on the title
I love the videos! It's kinda funny in my mind, because it feels like I'm back in pre-school learning colors.... But in all seriousness, these videos are super helpful!
Your lessons are always great. I cannot stop watching (and repeating!) them. I have a request. Could you please pronounce the title and subtitles of the lesson? It would be of great help. Kiitos paljon. And keep going.
I’m debating on learning finnish so I’m watching these videos to see how it sounds first and I’m listening to this without looking at my screen and when you said “musta kissa” I found that so funny because it sounds a bit like måste kissa (I have to pee) in Swedish 😂🙈
