More sentence structure :) What you need to do to be my intro:
Record yourself saying the following things:
"Hallo Leute! Ich bin ___ (You can say whatever you want here - name, (youtube) nickname, where you live, where you're from, why you're learning German, or anything else you'd like, one or more things. It's best if you do this part in German, too, but if you're too shy, English is fine as well - just try to keep the video to roughly 10 seconds or shorter) und ihr seht Deutsch Für Euch!"
Please don't edit your videos; if you'd like something changed (e.g. color correction), let me know in your email. I'll make sure to make you look as good as possible anyway, though ;)
I can use a lot of video formats, but your safest bets are the usual candidates: .avi, .mov, .mp4 - DON'T use .dv, please.
Once you're happy with your video, send it to me via ONE of these channels:
attach the video to an email to dfekontakt@gmail.com
send me a DropBox link/invite me to a folder (also dfekontakt@gmail.com)
send me a link to a the video on RU-vid, also via mail
please title your message "DFE Intro"
There's NO time limit for this, this will be an on-going thing as long as you send me videos.
I'm looking forward to your submissions - feel free to get creative with it! :)

Alright, that chart helped me figure out what your previous videos on sentence structure meant, because with my own personal learning style, getting bombarded with all the jargon never helped me even in English classes in high school. Jetzt ich verstehe. Vielen dank.

My German professor used to call the verb positions (in a main clause) "prongs." I believe meaning they are in a fixed position with everything else clustering around them.

Hey, can you tell me how to say "Can I get a drink?". My Grandma is German and she is taking me to Frankfurt in a few months, I know some of the basics, but actually have no clue how to ask for a drink. I would use Google translate, but over the 2 months I have been learning German, I have realised it isn't very accurate with putting together full sentences in different languages other than English. Nice video!

For the whole video, I didn't understand what you were saying. You look exotic. I kept seeing you. I have never seen someone as beautiful as you till today in my life of 28 years. Du bist schoen. I am a beginner in German language and its really difficult to go through all the videos which you want me to see as a preclude to this video i.e. The video of main clause and subordinate clause. From next time, if you put the links of such videos in this video description or which ever video you may be making further, it would be a great help, in case if it requires us to browse through your earlier videos. Thank you for the help. And I really appreciate what you are doing out there. Keep it up.

I thought if you use mit anything after becomes part of the Dative case?? , that's what my teacher has taught me
@TheMegalusDoomslayer
@TheMegalusDoomslayer 8 лет назад
I was once told by my one instructor (world mythology class of all things) that the verb isn't always the second part of the sentence. I don't know what she was talking about. My German teachers taught me it is always the second part of the sentence (except for in questions of course).
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 8 лет назад
Well, eh, it isn't, that's a VERY overly generalized statement. It never is in Nebensätze. It isn't in questions, imperatives or some colloquial sentences where you leave out a stand-in for a previously mentioned object/verb. ("Lutsch nicht an deinen Fingern!" - "(Das) mach ich doch gar nicht!") Most of those intricacies should becovered in these Syntax videos, though.

Is your model of the sentence structure "before - left verb - between - right verb - after" used by other people too, or is it just something that you constructed as a personalized teaching tool?
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 9 лет назад
It's a fairly common way to describe the German sentence structure in German linguistics called the "Feldermodell"; I just translated and slightly modified/simplified it.

you have a lot ridiculously long words .. But i have noticed that they are all just a combination of 2-3 words that are combined into one and form a new one by some logic.. like krackenhaus which is literary a sickness house but i got the idea :D (by the way, same principle is applied in chinese) is there a list of words that if ill now 10 of them ill ending know 50 words or something like that?

very good video, i really enjoyed the demonstration of the proper placing of the verbs and ext. i have been trying to get a handle of this subject and it is a bit more confusing then thought. a while back i watched a video that said in creating sentences in German the formula is... it goes 1st person plural personal pronoun (subject) then 1st person plural (verb) then adverbial clause (time,manner,place) so what is your take on this? is this a strong base for me to follow in creating sentences or is this just one way out f many? thanks and hope you respond soon thank you rick..
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 10 лет назад
Well... it's not incorrect, that is the most common way of forming a statement. However, like I already partly showcased here, you can always switch your segments around if you follow a few important rules. Also, the example you gave is extremely specific. Of course the subject isn't always a pronoun in 1st person plural, but I'm assuming you're aware of that.

Can you help me? I've been watching a lot of videos lately in German, just to see how well i can translate, and I've seen a few words that I can't find a solid meaning for....mal, schon, so, also, ganz...i'm sure there are more. It throws me off every time and is very frustrating!
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 10 лет назад
I can understand that and I don't know if it helps, but you are not the only one with this problem by far; these stupid little adverbs/particles are almost never necessary, but they constantly appear in German sentences. They're comparable to the teeny American "like", but there are more of them and they do have slightly meaning-changing (and therein different) meanings, especially in spoken language, but it won't do you any harm to just ignore them, both when translating and talking. However, I will do an episode on them, since this is a very German-specific topic and these words will give you that little extra you need to actually sound German.

Mitchell's link is very good and covers many of the most used words in German language. Addition to "wohl" It is used in 2 completely different ways. 1) to point out that you disagree with something that has just been said. Du hast nicht aufgepasst - Ich habe (sehr) wohl aufgepasst. 2) to point out that you are assuming somenthing Er hat wohl nicht aufgepasst. Without the "wohl" the assumption becomes a proven fact (that he didn't pay attention in this case)

What about this sentence? Ich werde nach Amerika bedenken zu reisen. I think that is close. I don't think, ich werde nach Amerika bedenken reisen/ reisen bedenken is right.
@FlyingBanana320
@FlyingBanana320 9 лет назад
It depends on what you are trying to say. If you plan to travel to America for example you would say: "Ich denke darüber nach, nach Amerika zu reisen." ("I think about traveling to America") or: "Ich denke ich werde nach Amerika reisen." (I think I will travel to America"). If somebody asked you if you would travel to America and don't know yet, you would say: "Ich werde darüber nachdenken, nach Amerika zu reisen." ("I will think about traveling to America) I hope that helps you... If it doesn't I apologize. My teachers failed to teach me anything about grammar rules and syntax, but beeing Austrian German is my mothertongue so I at least know how to speak and write by heart. ;D

Kanghyun Kim It's all about cases. Because English has no cases almost anymore, you have to get right the sentence structure in English. One of my issues in learning English. But in German you have cases. By using this cases you can build sentences in different ways but all means the same. So by translating "Wasser trinkt die junge Frau." (it is like an answer) it becomes "The woman drinks the water." So I recommend you, that you don't translate it literally. Greetings...

Nur um letzteres ging es aber - dass es so nicht gesagt wird, ist ja auch zu Genüge erwähnt. Das Neue für englische Muttersprachler ist diese große Variationsmöglichkeit der Satzglieder im Deutschen. Klar klingt das eine oder andere ungewöhnlich oder für Muttersprachler sogar "seltsam" aber es GEHT, anders als im Englischen :)
