To think, my first buck was somewhere between middle age and mature. I wish I could show pictures but his neck was huge. Easily over 200 lbs total and a rack score of 168 something. It took me and my oldest brother BOTH to drag him out of the bush. (no quad available) My dad said he's NEVER seen such a big buck in his life! Awesome video. Very informative.

I have been watching an older doe and her smell seems very advanced. She has a younger deer that followers her and one time gave a bark sound when she either spotted me or smelled me. It was quite exciting to see and hear. The younger doe is always behind her have you ever seen anything like this before?

Great summary of what to look for! In my observations of WT I identified two features you might expand on in another video. Younger deer have more of a bottlenose snout, mature deer have blockier heads akin to Labrador Retrievers and a toupee.

Big thing I tend to look at as well is the hips, older deer always seem to have more defined hips because once that belly drops a bit those hip bones start to become more pronounced and defined and more noticeable then that of a young buck, same can also be said for does

Very informative, I've worked as a Deer Aging Biologist for the Oklahoma Dept. of Wildlife Conservation at Deer Check Stations. All hunters were required to check their Deer after harvesting. We would extact the lower jaw and determine the age by dental formula and by wear. Of course that doesn't help a hunter in the field when the deer is in the scope.

Thanks for this! Where we hunt the deer never seem to reach maturity. We see some 5-7 pointers, but if we let them go, they will be dead by next hunting season. Rules in the hunt lease are "two on one side, 3 points total" as a minimum; and there is dog hunting in the lease too. I sure would like to hunt some mature deer, but those leases are REALLY expensive, unfortunately.

This helped I am trying to figure out a good way to determine if certain deer make good meat deer. By this estimate the last one I got was about 100 pounds but around 2-3 years. I am aiming for something with a little more meat on them though and a button I seen a few days ago looked almost as tall as the 5 point buck I got. This is a lot easier to determine than going off antlers.

The information is the same for bucks and does just pay attention to the body development. Once you take a good look at enough deers it becomes very easu to determine basic ages. As a hunter we should all use good management and only take mature animals.

I hunt state land in south eastern Michigan I have ran across a few mature bucks in my time something always happens to where i have not harvested the larger ones examples my daughter being there and wanted to commentary for her go pro while a 180 class buck is 15 yards away lol. but I did take a doe that DNR aged to be 13 1/2 years old and the amazing part about this story besides living that long on heavily hunted state land was the tracking. She ran a total of 150 yards with a well placed shot but when she got out of sight she ran and then back stepped on her blood trail 20 yards and leaped to the right so her trail of blood would miss lead me but as I taught my 11 year old daughter you owe it to the animal to find it no matter how long you have to look 3 hours later recovered. The meat was not to bad i was expecting tough and maybe a little gamey, but was just as tasty as my usual 4 to 5 1/2 yr old bucks very dark meat tho. Thank you for the tips and shoot str8.

Keith Warren I saw all four of my first mature deer this past deer season here in Texas. They we're all between 40-190 yards away. 1st was 40 yards away walking toward me just b4 dark as I Was scouting, two weeks b4 rifle season. I had my bow but forgot the broadheads! 2nd one was also 40 yards away as I was helping my ranch owner load his 7 pointer, that joker got up from bedding in a open field right by our camp. I had put my rifle in the truck to help him load. 3rd and 4th were 190 yards off, He was so old Keith his coat was black, huge rack, and He turned broadside and looked like a dang stallion! We called him, He looked up at us and darted into a Field with 20 does and three bucks (heavy rut). We have chase got within 400 yards, ranch boss shot and missed because He thought I said "shoot "! I didn't say shoot I said "ooh it's two" They were two bruisers about to lock horns and give me a dream scenario of either my dad and I or a really good friend taking out two bucks at the same time. Well he missed 3 Times at that huge buck and we never saw him on our property the rest of the season. I didnt get not one deer last year but I got 8 hogs so not too bad I guess.

I think the 2x4 rule is the simplest way to determine a bucks age. Imagine you put a 2x4 under the deer in the middle and two guys tried to lift him off the ground. If he doesn’t tip forward he isn’t mature. Pretty simple. To me the hard thing is determining score on the hoof. A ton of outfitters charge pretty significant penalties for shooting deer under a certain score. Usually 140 or so. Where I live 120 inch buck is huge so it’s hard for me to let 130-140 inch deer walk to begin with. I really can’t determine 20 inches of antler from 30 yards away. I wish someone could come up with a quick way to score a deer on the fly.

@@ryana3679 I only feed them corn and blocks about 2 months before season until a month or so after. No protein feed by my part anyway, im not saying they are 'Giant' 10 pointers. The ones I've let go of course were around maybe 13in inside spread and g2s were about 7-9in. Ive been managing the ranch for about 25 years, that probably has a lot to do with it. Only family or close friends get to hunt but you are right on some of those game ranches they have Ridiculously Big deer. The game ranches have taken the fun of family get togethers/education of our children on hunting "survival" and turned it into all about $$
@ryana3679
@ryana3679 4 года назад
Antichrist I completely understand. You’ve got a big enough spread that you’re able to manage the deer and harvest what you want. I’m a lil different up here in Ontario Canada. Have a small farm to hunt and a couple other spots to hunt. That being said some years the monsters will be in the area and sometime they won’t. Last winter was a hard winter on the deer and we had a ton of winter kill that sadly killed a bunch of large bucks that were too preoccupied with the ruts to eat much and had lil to no fat on them heading into the harshest weather.

If you're hunting public land I wouldn't use it unless you're trying to stop a deer because everybody else hunting there is using them as well and it can be like a warning call to the deer like hey I'm over here hunting you lol. Some tips would be hunt the sign rubs, scrapes, trails, but steer clear of bedding areas because deer will leave the area if they smell foreign odor or see you in their bedroom. Carry toilet paper with you for 2 reasons 1 obvious lol 2 while you're tracking a wounded animal leave some on a branch where you find blood and it will be like a beacon if you lose the blood trail. Hunt safe comrade

is there any real reason for determining a deer's age? i used to just want a legal deer and i'd punch my tag on it. then, when you finally get a nice buck, i wouldn't settle for anything less than a 4 point. and now, after really learning the deer, their habitat and movements, i am able to locate great bucks. and from those, i choose a rack i really like, and that's the deer i try to harvest. i will go skunked for the season trying to get THAT guy in my crosshairs. so now, i am always playing tag with a particular deer for the season, and sometimes several seasons. but never in my life would i be choosing a deer because of it's age. if that were the case, i would never kill a mature deer and would always be taking a tasty, tender wee one.

The only way to learn to age deer is look at a lot of deer. We have no problem estimating people’s age because we have seen countless people of deferent ages over many years. Young children have trouble estimating the age of a person simply from lack of experience. Same is true with deer if you’ve seen enough deer it’s as easy to age a deer as a person you can’t mistake a 15 year old and a 40 year old person if you have seen enough deer you can’t mistake a 3 year old and a 7 year old deer. There’s no more a trick to deer it than there is with people if your having trouble you simply need to look at more deer. Mature deer are unmistakable in appearance, they way they carry themselves, and behavior. None of the skinny six and eight pointers hanging around your feeder at 8 am every day bumping antlers and chasing does are mature they are the teenagers of the deer world.

You're aging deer that have been fed year round and never know real hunting pressure....big difference than a mountain buck who has good years and bad years of mast. I have seen 5 1/2 year old mountain bucks that don't have sagging bellies or huge necks....it really depends on what region and how much they get to eat during their life cycle. You can't compare truly wild deer to deer raised on ranches where they see humans everyday and never have to worry about going hungry...right Warren?
