In this video I cover all the symptoms of having air trapped inside your cooling system, including overheating, high operating temperature, no heat from your heater. But I also show you how you can properly bleed the air out of your system without the use of special tools or even a spill free funnel.

This guys SPOT ON and got this thing NAILED DOWN bigtime ! Short, concise, to the point not trying to be entertaining, just clear facts that really work. Wanted to add just a few points other people may find helpful. Don't overlook the point he makes about waiting for the cooling fans to come on, and wait again for them to come on the second time. Took my fans 40 minutes to come on the first time, I was doing this outside at 42 degrees farhrenheit and that was with keeping the engine at 1,500 RPM. I almost gave up on them coming on after 30 minutes, glad I didnt because when the fans came on the first time a fare amount of air came out just afterwards, I actually went thru 4 on off cycles with the fans just to really make sure I got all the air out, added about 15 minutes to the job. Be prepared when the cooling fans come on that the antifreeze in the funnel will go down noticeably and when they go off the antifreeze starts to rise again in the funnel. Thinking this expansion and contraction of the fluid helps push out even more air. I was working alone and used my snow brush that is about 24"-30" long to wedge it between the seat and the gas peddle to keep the car running at 1,500 RPM. I did do this with the car up on jack stands thinking it would make this process faster, but don't think that is the case, but it may really help getting the air out more thoroughly, especially from the heater core. So thankful for this guy, I was really at a dead end with my mechanic after he tried twice to bleed the system unsuccessfully after he had successfully replaced the head gasket. Just think he wasnt waiting long enough to have the cooling fans come on. Buy the way I did this on a Subaru, notice in this video he is doing this also on a Japanese car.

Absolutely terrific presentation and explanation of the process. I just did this (with a plain old funnel wrapped in duct tape) on a Nissan Murano, which is notoriously hard to purge the air out of. It's CRUCIAL to run it long enough for the fans to come on and off at least twice like he says. As soon as the fans kicked on, the coolant level in the funnel dropped dramatically, and I had to pour more coolant in to keep up with it. When the fans cycled off and on, that happened again. The third time, the coolant level in the funnel stayed where it was. Only after this did I get solid heat coming out of the vents inside the cabin. The other thing that may not be obvious from his presentation is that while the engine is running, you will see bubbles of air burping up in the funnel. That's good. It means air is getting out of the system, and if the funnel level drops down to the bottom, put some more in. You must keep at least a little coolant in the base of the funnel at all times so coolant will drop in as the air escapes. Keep running the engine and replenishing the funnel as long as you keep seeing occasional air "burps" escaping. It took 30 minutes on mine, revving the engine and letting the fans cycle on and off, until the burping stopped and the heater was working correctly. When you are all done and you put the radiator cap back on, make sure that radiator is full right to the very top, so that as the system cools off, it doesn't pull any air at all back into the system. If it's full to the top, it will suck coolant in from the overflow tank as it cools, which is what you want.

Thank you for the great tips. One thing is not clear from this video - temperature has to be turn to max., how about fan? should it be turn to max. too. Too many confusions regarding turning fan on or off on RU-vid. Did you bleed coolant air with the vehicle on flat surface, on you jacked up the front of the car? I will appreciate your advice.

So here is the question!! I bought the funnel so I checked my coolant in the morning cold to check the level !! Radiator level I guess was ok the reservoir was over the max level though!! So I just wanted to get any bubbles that they where there for my piece of mind as I heard some gurgling in the heater core. Well after an hour of the truck running I squeezed the radiator hose few time some bubbles pop up but when I shut of the engine even with warm coolant the level in the radiator was the same as when it was cold!!! Wtf?? Any directions??

What'd you find out? If you used a funnel like he did and that happens, I'd guess maybe the stat isn't opening. The top radiator hose should be hot once it heats up (showing us the stat opened) I just did this to my pickup and it does rise and fall a little due to heat. (Park on a small incline making the radiator highest point) and of course, ensure heater is set to high.

Took a half hour and got my buddy's heat working in his 2006 Dodge Ram last night thanks to this video. We did lose a lot of coolant after we got heat working...didn't have a large enough funnel, and when we shut off engine, lost even more, but we refilled the reservoir after re-capping radiator and it refilled itself from the reservoir. We topped it off after it had stopped taking coolant from reservoir. He drove home with heat for the first time in months. Thanks for the video, my friend!

Okay, I have just watched a bunch of videos on bleeding the coolant system and this seems to be the best one. It included quite a bit of advice missing from the others. Notable was the advice to put the car on an incline in order to encourage the air to bubble up and out. Another thing included here was the advice to use a funnel but remove it by putting a rag around a rod and then lifting it up. I guess this to make sure that coolant in the funnel (maybe with air bubbles) does not go right back down the funnel? Also liked how he remarked on how you may hear water moving around the dashboard if there is air in the system. Just lots of good tips here, it seems. The only thing missing here I think is some advice to wear safety goggles when dealing with the radiator. Seems like a simple and obvious safety step, and who wants hot coolant on their eyes? I will follow the advice and see how it goes.

Good video. I use a regular funnel with tape just as you did. But before I use the funnel, I also wrap tape around a wood dowel and fit it to the inner spout to make a sealed fit. When I am done I insert the dowel into the funnel to seal and pour the remainder of fluid into the bottle. No mess and no loss. I normally put it on ramps after I fill with the cap on. The air will travel to the cooling system's highest point and end up in the overflow tank where it will escape.

bought a second genesis coupe 2.0t and noticed when i turn on the car it would get scorching hot in 3 mins without going to H on the temp gauge. before you could literally fry an egg on my valve cover, the upper coolant hose was too hot to touch longer than 1.5 secs, and the radiator would get super hot at idle. my other genesis coupe stays cool. so i decided to follow the steps in this video and repeat multiple times, got alot of bubbles out squeezing both hoses and the second time i got bubbles from only the lower radiator hose. i let my car idle for 30 mins and the valve cover was super cool i was shocked, the radiator isn't getting as hot now also. i will try some more tomorrow and see if it gets better. so far the car still has no heat and the upper hose is hotter than the lower hose but it wont get as hot as it used to. going to try this on my other genesis because of the dramatic results in removal of heat

Kind of curious. All the instructions I read and watch have the car on a flat surface. Seems to me it would make more sense to either have the front of the car on ramps or jack stands... Air rises through water, why not make the radiator cap the highest point? The top of the radiator should at least then be higher than the heater core, right?

Move that and you'll see a bleeder there . Best to do it when the system has been driven so there's some pressure but let things cool down so you don't get sprayed with hot coolant . Just bleed till you get solid flow of coolant coming out of that bleeder valve." cheers

My Chev Van over heats and boils After I swapped out the Pump, T-Stat, & Fan Clutch, BUT the Heater gets plenty Hot. I filled the coolant by just pouring It into the Radiator, So.... I think I will try Your way.

Great tip thanks a lot for sharing this video with us. I recently had to replace a broken radiator hose that snapped off at the tea filler, and I knew I needed to burp the system but I couldn’t figure out how to do it because the heat is not working

Hi. Thanks for the video. I tried to burp the cooling system for over 40min, but my lower radiator hose remained cold, although the top radiator hose is hot. Hence, my cooling fan never came on. For 30 plus min I did see bubbles coming out. And it took about half a gallon of coolant; I lost some from replacing the cooling fan temperature switch earlier. What can cause the lower radiator hose to remain cold after 40min of engine run time? Is that normal?

I've done all my own work for years. better or worse lmao. but ive never ran into having an air bubble in my cooling system.

I recall correctly that's it closed system. The only way to access the radiator cap because there isn't one is through your coolant reservoir tank. Just look up how to bleed a closed coolant system. Good luck
@_Ambition124

@@joshbeck1456 heater core could be clogged with debris, air might still be trapped in the system (sometimes you have to bleed multiple times if its stubborn)
@daysend1341
@daysend1341 5 лет назад
Kudiyar Orazymbetov there are several ways to get air in the system including blown head gasket issues. If you have head issues it can press combustion air into cooling system, depending on engine. I would think you would have a coolant loss issue with a crack in the coolant res. If you let it get low enough it is possible I would think.
@daysend1341

Josh Beck try to take the thermostat out and run it with out one. See if it doesn’t heat up. If it still does look for bubble trails in your coolant res tank. If you have a lot of bubbles you may have a head gasket problem. Do a cylinder bleed down test if you have bubbles. Good luck hope this helped.

When I rev the engine it creates some bubbles in the funnel. is that normal? (2005 honda civic)Not at idle just revving it. i was trying to get air out because my reservoir bottle wasnt refilling the radiator. getting the air out it helped as it sucked back two thirds of the coolant that filled my bottle after a drive (took over several hours to suck it back in)but not all the excess coolant went back. maybe it has more air in it. i just dont understand the bubbles while i rev it. i did several head gasket checks and it looks good and engine runs smooth.

Got a code for bad thermostat. Replaced it. Drained n flushed the coolant. Bled the new coolant. Got temp up to normal, but my cooling fan does not come on (it never did prior to replacing the thermostat) unless the AC is on. I also noticed the lower radiator hose is not warm. But im getting heat and no overheating. Could it be the coolamt temp sensors? I really hope its not a faulty thermostat that i purchased new. My check engine light keeps coming back on every two weeks giving me a bad thermostat code. P0128. Now my temp gauge is only at 1/4-1/3 on the cool side. It's not at half anymore. OBD2 is only reading ECT temp of 150° F when car is already taken for a 20 minute cruise. Cooling fan comes on when the AC is on, so im assuming it's not the relays or fuses?

I will try this tomorrow! Knew nothing about car, today I had no heating, then the light start flashing, scared the S out of me, I had to stop a few times to cool down the engine , it took me 2 hrs to get home😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 The coolant were boiled out of the cap, seem like nothing much left in the radiator as 1 liter down still looks bottomless... Seriously want to junk my Mazda 2, 250k on the clock already... if it couldn't fixed like this, I go straight into a showroom!😐😐😐😐😐

I changed my thermostat and the car started heating. I set the heater on max, fan on low, I put the funnel, squeezed the coolant hose and added coolant like 3 times. It worked! Thank God and thank you sir😃😃😃

Dear, Thx First of all. I spent 45 minutes there, I couldn't reach 90• degree. It was still around 45•degree. I press pipes, open valve to bleed water but nothing. The car wasn't warm at all. May be broken thermostat? I really have Hugh air there. What to do?

I see, after adding and running on Prestone Radiator flush for 3 days(to clean drove few hundred miles), and drained out and filled with coolant. Now my car has a shorting kind of sound coming from Driver side when driving around 65mph+ and no power pick up, at 55mph there is no shorting kind of noise and engine seems to run smooth. what went wrong? I do not see any light on the dash.

Can a mechanic please help me out here ? I went and got my car checked out cause when I was driving my air started coming out hot and then turned off due to the engine overheating . It was overheating really bad out of nowhere . The mechanic I took it to said it was a leak coming from the gasket behind the water pump . Well my boyfriend changed out the whole water pump and gasket and all that . But it was still overheating so we changed out the thermometer rn and we’re currently trying to get all the air of my cooling system at this very moment lol . I guess I’m just worried that if this doesn’t work , then what is the problem ? And when I turned my car off the shit started squirting out of my radiator cap everywhere and my bf had me turn the car back on . Lol idk anything about cars I’m so confused rn

wille williamsson I don’t have oil in water or water in oil but keep getting air in my collant system. Can it still be the head gasket? It runs well for a few hours after bleeding the system but then it builds up pressure and air again. Ford Fiesta 2005 1.4

I have a question I just fix my radiator for camry 08 I did a pressure test coolant I notice when I pump it to 16 psi it slowly I mean really slowly going down a bit every 5 minute the needle going down a lil bit what Does that means?

@kurthuck2630 7 месяцев назад
Well that explains why I hear a sloshing sound but the glove box! I got to change my water pump this weekend due to it leaking. That might be the reason also for my engine light being on as well.
@jamesg4730
@jamesg4730 3 года назад
Dash is fluctuating a lot after thermostat and radiator change, never did this before. Was driving fine and anytime I gassed above 4k rpm I could visibly see the needle go up then as soon as I stopped gassing it went right back down. I’ve been trying to get any air out and still haven’t gotten it all out..
