I've chased this haircut for years, my aunt had this in the 70's when I was small and I always thought it was so beautiful however, I have not found anyone who can cut this style. I will take this video with me to the shop and see if I can't get this for myself after all this time
if you are able to take this video and indeed receive this haircut, would you kindly post a before and after pic? If not comfortable doing so, I understand. Thanks and have a great day!
I've gotten my very worst haircuts taking a picture of a haircut along with me. Not sure why nobody can cut hair from looking at a picture anymore. Shops around where I live will just look at the finished product of this video and say, yeah, I got this. They'll never watch the video to realize they don't.
@@tailzzzzz My experience is I tell them what I want, specifically & we discuss whether it will work with my hair then they do what they want I leave not with what I wanted at all.
Got to go to a big city like Dallas and find out by asking who is the best hairstylist and a guy at that,no woman. The best in Texarkana Tx is "Bro to Bro". They are awesome ,even had a girl chase me in the mall and asked me where did I get my hair cut at and I told her and dnt know after that but if she went she was happy
I've been looking for someone to give me this cut too...i'm also going to take the clip to show the hairdresser to see if they can do this...good luck i say
Yes,but more than 97% there is not one that can cut the way you want it,even by showing them a picture and that is the facts. Dnt know how in the world they got their license.
@@annross1611 because continued education is paramount. We really start learning right after we get a license, and take continued education. You only have to demonstrate you can section, palm your shears, and cut safely. They don't care how bad they cut it. This is why it's important to ASSIST for 6mo to a year or go to a really good technical school that teaches an entire matrix of cuts. This man is classically trained by Sassoon. It's obvious. (Possibly Paul Mitchell, but they all came out of Sassoon principles.)
Watched this tutorial a few months ago and used a razor instead and literally cut the most beautiful shag cut on my client. Literally got so many clients because of this tutorial thank you! You're amazing.
Really would be best as razor cut shag , he cuts in front of guide fingers on one side snd behind on other side no need ??? Just pull a razor and cut with same over direction to original guide twist to horizontal gives more length too
Finally! An educator who actually explains what's the impact of the techniques he chooses for the cut instead of just a to do list. Lovely, you earned a subscriber.
Omg I was crazy enough to do this on myself!!! I’m so in love!!!! It revived my curls and it looks beautiful straight. If you are thinking about it do it!! Thank you so much for your beautiful easy to follow video!! 😀
@@googleuser2874 Follow the video extremely careful. Listen to what he says about parting and raising the hair at certain angels. Take small pieces that way it not to much to handle.
@@CheleBoxy me too. It's a great tutorial but I'd prefer seeing the cut without styling. Imo there are a lot of women like me who never style their hair!
When we used to cut this style back in the 70’s we put all the hair neatly and evenly in a ponytail on the very top of the head and cut the hair off right above the elastic if a shorter shag was wanted or cut it an in or three above the elastic . As you take it down you get even layers all the way down in all directions. Then we trimmed the bangs and the back a bit to give a little fullness at the edges, cleaned up the look. Better to cut longer to start, you can always do it again if you want it shorter. This was for friends and family,in the salon we did it more like this because people were paying money for our time. Same result . Works amazing on curly hair.
The shags looked better then. I had one too and the ends of the hair were trimmed to give the cut a richer finish.. Those scraggly ends ruin the cut for me.
it works on curly hair? i was about to comment that i have crappy curly/frizzy-ish hair that would never be good in this cut, as much as i love it. now you've piqued my curiosity!
@@mythepoeia if you want it to be curly, I’ve never straitened this cut , just encouraged the natural curl to riot. Do you use the curly girl method on your hair ?
@@jillipepper5353 no i don't really use any method - it's almost all one length now and just a mass of squiggly waves and curled ends (and split ends). haven't had it cut in over 2 years. i can't imagine my hair doing anything but lying there, as that's the way i've worn it for so long.
It's tineless and universally beautifful if you have enough hair. There are cute shorter versions, too. Not great on low density and fine hair, but works with most hair.
@@rain3743 My hair is high density but is very fine and straight. My experience is that it generally looks okay, but 1. balancing product when I choose to style it is tough because I need enough to get some volume but no so much it weighs the hair down, which happens easily. Number 2. making sure the hair is clean and not greasy is doubly important, because that extra shininess makes me look like a lion who got rained on. (I definitely recommend looking up photos of lions with their manes soaked, it’s very silly looking)
I was an apprentice hairdresser in mid 70s and had my hair cut very similar to this.. it was razor and “tapered cut” razor was always used on wet hair and tapering was always on dry. 😁 I am dying to have my hair cut like this again.. love it. 😍
I went today to a hairdresser, in a high end salon, here in Florida, who has been a hairdresser for 50 years. She is in her 70's. She looked at the picture of the shag haircut I wanted, and said, "Oh a shag!" Then, she proceeded to cut long layers and said it was done. It looks nice, but it is not a shag, and she didn't do anything near the steps that this video took us through. I was a hairdresser almost 30 years ago. I could not do a shag, and even if I could now, I wouldn't be able to reach the angles to do all of this on my own head. Oh well. No shag haircut for me!
Same! I’ve had my hair below my butt for years. After spending my whole childhood always getting it cut off by my aunt hairdresser in training and gma who wanted to match bowl cuts. So It was my safety blanket. But this year I just said time for something new. And cut it all off and got a shag. It’ feels so freeing and sooo much easier to style funny enough. Hair sure does grow back when you care for it. but I love it ♥️
there are a lot of great hair tutorials on RU-vid by a lot of awesome hair stylists, but you're my new favorite! It's fun to watch you work your instinctual magic!
❤ WOW! Fantastic! ❤ I am a 19yr Hairstylist retired. My life was the 70s/80s . That Bing rolled 🪽 winged hair...remember.... thank you for the nice tutorial on the shag cut. ✂️ my daughters been dying for me to give her , but was a little rusty! ❤ FANTASTIC JOB! ❤
I was watching this and following very easily. It looked comfortable and easy to follow...then I realized you are left handed...I am too. I sometimes get lost with handedness. Watching other lefties make demonstrations more easy for me to understand.
I’ve been watching many tutorials on this haircut. Your style in teaching, explaining is superb. I finally understand the technique from this video. You have shared your wisdom and I’m grateful to you for that. Well done!
Thanks for showing that a great cut needs the time and attention to each transition and connection to remain flowy, especially with finer and fewer hair! Very well shown too, thanks again! 🙏🤗
Ask on the phone if they are willing to watch the video and then cut your hair that way..I found one stylisr that said she would, so Im going to her soon after she wstches this.
Beautiful and up-to-date haircut for nowadays I love shags and nobody do it here in my country I do it myself after taking classes it's the best hair ever I love the models hair colour it's awesome thanks
In my opinion he made this cut more difficult than what it really is. When I went to hair dressing school in the seventies it was called the Farrah Faucet cut. You can do the layers yourself by pulling all you hair to the top of your head. Ex. Put your hair in a pony tight at the top of your head. Pull the band away from your head till you’ve reached the length you want and cut all hair above the band and voila, you have the layers you want.
So glad that u educate, I love to keep up with new cuts and color. You go thru this cut nice and slow showing angles, and explain why, and what it does for the cut. Love your narration, I had to go back a couple times but you tought me, great job! Just wish I saw this before I paid 300$ today, I could have done this myself! Keep teaching!!
I'm in the industry, but retired. WHY can't I find people that UNDERSTAND elevation, angles, and the proper way to place your body in realitivity? Excellent hair cut and good tutorials 👌 I'm so jealous of that manakin lol!
@Ben Brown Bbeducation: You need to show the link of the first shag video you did on the silver hair! It is absolutely PERFECT because I had this haircut in the '70's and you are spot on! It's a full video that one can take to one's hairdresser to get it perfect!!
I have this haircut. I usually cut it like this and then grow it super long then cut it again... I love this style. I have medium fine, lightly wavy hair. This cut gives my hair the perfect amount of texture. Everyone says it’s my “rockstar hair” 😊
Excellent. This is what I want but a very short version for a man. Actually my hair is so short I want to start getting prep haircuts for a medium men's version on myself.
