Hello - thank you so much for such a helpful video. Can you share brand of vermiculite you recommend? I’m in zone 5, trying to figure out where to keep the tubers once winterized. Unless you have access to refrigeration/set temp - indoors is too warm, but even in our garage it will dip down too low in the winter. Any suggestions? Thank you!!

Hi Beth! I use vermiculite from Greenhouse Megastore. Before I had a large commercial fridge, I stored my tubers in the garage near an interior wall. I wrapped the containers with a blanket when the temperatures got colder. Just make sure temperatures don't drop below freezing. I've heard some people store in an unheated room in the house if the garage is too cold.

Thankyou so much! Unfortunately I left mine in pots over winter as I never knew to do this.. I was baffled when I went to repot them today why there was so many bulbs in the pot. Now I know. Hopefully they might still have a chance, but I can start again if not.

You can still divide in the spring! Sometimes it's easier to divide when you can see all the eyes. Sounds like you have a healthy dahlia plant with lots of tubers!

Jen, Thankyou very much. Say a little about the benefit of cinamon - I had heard of sulphur. Also the use of vermiculite. Would you use a saw maybe to cut through some of those tough stems, probably safer. I see you favour braking a clump mainly in to individual tubers with a growing eve, rather than a few tubers to 1-3 eyes. Thanks, Steve

Hi Steven, the cinnamon is used to help prevent any mold. You can also sprinkle some cinnamon in the vermiculite. I like to use varying sizes of scissors and and garden tools to divide my dahlias. You can also buy a dahlia dividing knife that helps to separate the larger clumps. Sometimes I will leave several tubers in a clump if I can not see an eye on each individual tuber. Hope this helps!

@@TheFloweringFarmhouse Thankyou Jennifer, I have now seen some of your other videos in which you did explain about cinnamon, vermiculite, tools of the trade, and storage. All very helpful. I am enthused, Steve Bath, England).

Do you just lay the tuber on the vermiculite. Or do they need to be fully covered with it? Can they be layered with other tubers as well?

Thanks very helpful. Just to clarify, if I'm dividing in the spring, do I need to put on cinnamon or let it dry or a bit before replanting? Or can I just repot?
@TheFloweringFarmhouse
@TheFloweringFarmhouse 10 месяцев назад
I'd suggest only using the cinnamon if you are storing them again. I don't think it's necessary if you are going to replant right away. Just make sure the cutting is dry

If I live in a warmer climate and dig the tubers out just to divide them, when can I replant them? I imagine that I need to wait until the fresh cut has dried up..?
@TheFloweringFarmhouse
@TheFloweringFarmhouse 10 месяцев назад
Yes, you would want to make sure the cut has healed over or hardened before replanting.

Quick question. If I only grow one variety of Dahlias...can I also save the seeds from the flowers that season or no?
@TheFloweringFarmhouse
@TheFloweringFarmhouse 2 года назад
That's a great question. It's possible the bees could pollinate the seeds from other dahlia pollen nearby if you have neighbors growing dahlias. To pollinate, the flower does need pollen from another dahlia.
