I lean forward too much too. I’ve fallen backwards before and really hurt myself, so it’s hard to trust myself going backwards.

lol, the first time I went skating, I couldn't go forward, only backwards. I can't do anything at all except slide around in reverse😂😂

Do you mean you are participating with the Special Olympics? Or you are just insprired by it?

I'm talking Figure skating for the special Olympics I just started to take it November 6 of 2014 I can now stop on my skates that took me too weeks to learn and now my coach Nancey Joe is teaching me how to skate backwards but that I'm not getting I don't have a really good balance I keep falling but I get right back up again and try again I'm now learning how to do the spin, I can do that now and now I'm learning how to do cross overs now my mom wanted me to take it when I was little but I was to scared to get on the ice I watch it on Tv all the time and I just went to see christmas on ice my mom said it takes a lot of time to learn how to do all that I'm trying to balance on one skate but that 's kind of hard to do if you don't have a good balance I can't wait to have a good balance to do all this how long did it take you to have a good balance you were little at the time right?

Lisa Chaisson I seriously do not understand what you are saying. How on earth can you take the special olympics lol, you have to be elected for that. Maybe there is a language barriere and you are not explaining it well but for someone that's 29 you should be able to explain it better.

Did you get over this? I have the same thing, tried stepping, wiggles, and lemons/swizzles but always end up on my toes.

The reason we don't advise falling backwards onto your butt is it increases the risk of slipping off the heel off the blade with such momentun that your head snaps back, hitting the back of your head on the ice. This would cause very serious injury on the ice.

1 year later but wanted to blurb that when I fall forward I never fall on my knees. I usually let my toe pick & my hands catch me -- this way i've never fallen onto my knees.

Bit if you fall on your bum wrong and you can damage your coccyx or spine. So I wouldn't say it's any safer. Take precaution when you fall down. Chances are if you're in figure skates, your toe pick will stop you falling forwards, falling backwards is a harder story. I suggest trying to spread out the surface area of contact as much as possible before impact.

It hurts af when you fall on your tailbone though. Just my preference, I prefer falling on my knees.

Learning to skate forwards on the ice properly takes time, it doesn't happen over night! We have a video on forward skating on your channel and also a video that shows you how to improve your forward skating. Feel free to check them out!

So it's very common to teach beginners to do a half swizzle, then pick their foot up and bring it back to then centre, then repeat. But as you get more advanced with your backward skating, the half swizzle is replaced by a backward push. The backward push allows for greater speed and better weight transfer from foot to foot when doing backward Stroking. If your coach is telling you to forget the half swizzle and do a backward push, it's probably because they think your ready to start doing a more advanced version. For this video we hired the ice. If I am not mistaken the quieter times when I was there were early mornings and during the day during school term time. Things may be different now though.
