Learn how to improvise like a pro on the piano in just under 8 minutes! 

Start to focus on scales and their relation to chords. The most common one is major or minor pentatonic scale. You will learn to see that the shape of the chords are related to the scale.

Or just only use white notes so you wont do anything wrong nah im joking

You need to train your ear to be able to take any melody you hear and translate it into notes.

MangoldProject how you practice your ear? i have played guitar for two years now and i still can't arrange nything. i think piano and guitar are same. any suggestion?

actually it's really simple. but it takes a lot of practice .. take any song and try to imitate it's melody lines on guitar .. this simple but effective technique helped me master that technique as Mr asaaf said

Actually, people will naturally sing in pentatonic scales. Majority of old folk music are pentatonic tunes, all around the world. Then, this being about jazz, you'd add the blue notes. Essentially, knowing these theory "tricks" will help in translating the melody in your head into notes, you'll make less mistakes and the mistakes you do make will sound more acceptable within the constraints of the piece.

Think about orchestral composers. They don't even have an "instrument" to go to while writing a score!

This video's philosophy is directly applicable to jazz standards. Learn to improvise singing, and then play what you sing. This will ensure you're not adhering to scales to licks or muscle-memory.

I have a video on playing together with a guitar player. This is a pretty huge topic and I'm not sure I'm very qualified to answer your question with specifics. Perhaps a guitar teacher might?

You must first train your ear to be able to actually play a melody you sing. Forget about doing things in real time when you start out.

I don't have "favorite keyboard players", but just musicians. A lot of my playing is inspired actually by non-keyboard/piano players, including bassists, guitarists, drummers, ethnic instruments, etc ... As far as piano goes, my #1 hero though is Lyle Mays. Many piano players I think are amazing often play boring music and vice versa. One of my favorite trios is Uzeb which actually has NO keyboard player in it :) (but Michel Cusson the guitar player uses MIDI guitar to play keyboard parts, so they're cheating a bit ... ) So it's all over the place. Who determines who you should listen to is YOU because only you know who you want to sound like!

That's not an easy question to answer. You're basically asking how can we make a chord progression sound "good" or "interesting" instead of playing the old boring textbook voicings every time. If you have 1-2 years to spare I can answer that, sort of :). Or, you could go through the many videos on my channel, which contain many tips and tricks on chord voicings and will get you started in the right direction.

you can use patterns or arpeggios as mangold did in some videos or u can use different voicings as mangold referred to. you can inspire and see what other composers do in the music style that u prefer and u want to compose
