I found a jar of mullein that I had put up in vodka last year, and it is still fine! 80-100 proof is perfect and will preserve! The extraction process times out eventually but it does not go bad. Mullein tincture has helped me so much when I need to "expectorate", there is nothing better for viruses or any condition that causes congestion.

Oh tinctures will last a very very long time. In fact I have some in my apothecary that are many years old (the lesser used herbs). The trick to increasing their shelf life is to not press them (remove the herb material) until you need the tincture. Once mine are pressed I like to use it up within a year or so. Mullein is magic too isn't it? So glad you have this plant ally in your life.

Another Question... I have V. Thapsus but also some of the more colorful ornamental hybrids.. Do you know if they all share the same medicinal properties as V. Thapsus? My 1st V. Thapsus tincture was great!
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 2 года назад
Unfortunately I am uncertain and I doubt enough research has been done to be able to say for certain that they do share the same chemical constituent profile. In general, when they start to hybridize species they do tend to lose medicinal potency. It is also possible that there are added aspects to the chemical constituents. The safe bet is to use the wild variety if you can. Good luck with your medicine making!

HI, I just found your channel, great stuff here. thanks so much. One question. this recipe - You mention 30% alcohol and 10% veg. glycerin. how much alcohol and how much glycerin per 500 ml bottle? (is it really 60 % herbs, 30% alcohol and 10% veg glycerin... i want to try this way for my mullien tincture but not understanding your menstrum mix recipe.. THANK YOU> kelly
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs Год назад
The menstrum is 30% alcohol, 10% vegetable grade glycerin and the remaining 60% is water. If it's easier to just use straight vodka, you can do that. In terms of ml, that will greatly depend on what percentage alcohol you are starting with (for example vodka is 40%). Herbs you are using in a 1 to 5 ratio. Is there seeds in that spike that's poison?
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 25 дней назад
Not to my knowledge. I've been making tincture this way for more than a decade and have never had an issue. My understanding is that the seeds do contain rotenone which as an isolated compound can cause some issues when consumed in large amounts. In my opinion I am not concerned about this in terms of creating a whole plant medicine where the seeds would make up a very small amount. However, if you are concerned about that, I would remove the seeds prior to processing. Do what makes you feel comfortable!
@glsak
@glsak 2 года назад
After you press the tincture, do you run it through a coffee filter or anything else to remove the hairs? Enjoyed your video.
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 2 года назад
Thank you! For oil I run it through multiple layers of cheesecloth because I most commonly use it for ear oil. I don't want the hairs in that end product! But for tincture I just run it through a very fine mesh sieve.

@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 2 года назад
@@saskiaberkhout1779 If the sieve is very fine mesh it should be fine. But keep in mind you consume tea in much larger quantities than a tincture, so if there is a chance any of those fine hairs are getting through, you might want to use a few filtering methods. Hope that helps!
