Nice tutorial! For the beginners: dont forget to JUMP! that's what an ollie effectively is, a jump with a skateboard. As you do the pop you gotta be jumpin then pull your legs up and the board fill follow

Exactly, this step is often overlooked! First jump, then when your weight is coming off the board, just before your rear leg is straight, pop the tail down with your ankle. Next pull up the front foot toward your rear knee to allow the board to rotate, and only then slide up/forward with the front foot while pulling up the rear leg. I see most beginner trying to pop and slide their front foot while still standing on the board, that does not work obviously.

@@hjoore Good point it is jump then pop, not pop then jump. And what do we mean by pop well it is to snap the tail down so fast that the natural flex of the wood is springboarded to action and it will fly up under our feet as we take off from our jump. Then the hight we get is determined by how much room can you give the board by pulling up your legs. Overall you pretty much dont even have to think about 'the slide' as a step in itself, it's just a byproduct/side effect of everything else.

Number 1: You never want to learn how to Ollie standing still because you are mostly going to do it while rolling. Number 2: stance is very important you want to make sure your shoulders, hips, and feet are not turned or the board will turn when you jump. Number 3. Always remember PREP, POP, JUMP/SLIDE,LAND. The reason I say jump and slide at the same time is because it’s a fluid motion. NUMBER 4. Place a water bottle sideways on the floor and practice these steps while moving because this will teach you how to Ollie over obstacles 👍 hope that helps!

You missed the point of why you do it standing still. 😂 it’s to learn the foot placement and technique without worrying about rolling.

I taught myself this last year at the tender age of 39 :)

How did you learn it? Do you have any advice to share? :)

@ Honestly, just sheer bloody perseverance; if you keep at it you will get the timing down. The problem with skate tricks, is you can tell someone exactly how you did it, down to the mm, and still they won't be able to do it - for two reasons; the body doesn't yet have the "muscle memory" of how to do the trick, and second committing - your brain is always using it's previous knowledge of how to keep safe; but here are a few things that helped me: 1. Practice them rolling 2. Master hippie jumps to really suck the knees up into the chest with a true jump from your toes and land them consistently, add obstacles to hippie jump over, this will build trust that you can jump over stuff and land safe (eventually), and prove to you that you can actually jump from your board whilst moving at speed and not die or eat shit. 3. Make sure your body weight is centered over the board, it's easy to lean over or back, you can check this by squaring your shoulders to the board and hang your arms and hands down to the nose/tail, if they're in line, your body weight is centered. This will increase your pop and also help you land it. 4. Don't practice in thin air, add a small light obstacle and increase when you can get over consistently. 5. Don't crouch for too long,. Crouching too long will affect your balance and commitment and delaying messes up timing, the ollie is one smooth movement, and this includes the crouching/bending of knees before the pop/front foot slide. 6. Look at the obstacle and briefly the nose and then pop. Don't look down at the board and pop. This will help you really slide that front foot, it's easy when looking down to think you've slid that front foot, but it's really a rocket ollie. Looking ahead will help you learn to push the front leg out and away from the back leg as you jump. 7. Most of all, just enjoy skating, don't just practice the ollie but remember, we skate for fun :) If you can't get it down, just do some manualing up on to a box or manual pad (lift the nose then tail) and get about obstacles like that; in fact that's a good experience as you will learn you can "crash" into things and not die :)

@@vix_in_japan Wow, thanks for this amazing advice! I have spent many many hours on learning how to ollie since I started skating back in 2014, but still haven't managed to do a "real ollie". For me I think the crouch and jump are the most mysterious parts of the ollie. How to crouch and how to jump. When to lift the front foot, when to push down the back foot to pop, etc. It feels like I've tried everything, but your answer made me realise that I haven't really tried to "jump from my toes". I have probably kept my feet too flat on the board - many tutorials mention that it's really important to put all pressure on the balls of the feet while crouching and jumping. So I need to explore that more. And probably use my arms much more, which is something I have started exploring in general recently.

Could’ve talked about the different styles of Ollie’s via Ollie North or Ollie south which is basically taking a foot off the board whilst in the air still a great tutorial just lacking some minor details
